CHAPTER 1246: CHAPTER 1245: METHODS TO DISTINGUISH DIRECTIONS

As soon as Hasa finished speaking, the old Shaman nodded and said, "The Mogor Tribe primarily hunts Firebird Beasts. The desert surrounding their oasis has many Red Scorpions, which are the Firebird Beasts’ favorite food.

Be sure to be cautious when you head there. If you see increasing numbers of Firebird Beasts, that means you’re heading in the right direction."

Ji Nuan broke into a sweat—so this is how they determine direction? I really misjudged them.

After bidding farewell to the beasts, their group advanced for a short while before Ji Nuan stopped at a flat expanse of sand.

The oasis wasn’t far off—only about a thousand meters away. She could still see the tall trees within the oasis.

Now, however, she needed to determine the direction of the Mogor Tribe to avoid getting lost as they continued their journey.

"What’s wrong, Nuannuan?" Xiu Yan also jumped down from Damao’s back.

Ji Nuan pressed her lips together. "I need to roughly determine the direction we’ll be heading in. If we proceed without a clear path, it’ll be easy to get lost again."

Xiu Yan frowned. "There aren’t any reference points in this desert, so it’s hard to determine direction. After walking a bit further, we won’t even be able to see the oasis behind us."

Ji Nuan nodded—this was exactly what worried her. If they encountered a sandstorm or got chased by a wild beast, they’d end up lost.

"Brother Xiu Yan, could you find a few straight wooden sticks in the carrying basket for me?"

She remembered watching a survival show in China where the adventurous protagonist survived in the desert by using his dagger to figure out directions.

Luckily, she’d been very into adventure back then and had watched the entire series with full attention. Now, she was feeling pretty thankful.

She planted one straight stick upright into the sand and placed a small stone at the tip of the shadow cast by the stick.

After about twenty minutes, the shadow of the stick had shifted. Ji Nuan placed another small stone at the new position of the shadow.

Using another stick, she connected the two stones, which established the east-west axis. Then, she placed a stick perpendicular to that line to mark the north-south axis.

She pulled out a piece of yellow antelope Beast Skin and drew the oasis belonging to the Sahara Tribe on it.

Looking at the results, she said, "To reach the Mogor Tribe, we need to head northwest."

Even if the method wasn’t entirely precise, it wouldn’t be too far off—the sun was unlikely to deceive anyone.

Harry and the other beasts looked completely bewildered throughout the process. But when Ji Nuan finally pointed ahead, they seemed to understand something. Glancing at the slanted wooden stick on the ground indicating the direction, they realized that Shaman Ji Nuan had been determining the location of the Mogor Tribe.

Harry urged his camel, Trio, forward. "Shaman Ji Nuan, were you just figuring out the location of the Mogor Tribe?"

He couldn’t contain his curiosity and asked outright.

Ji Nuan smiled and nodded. "Yes. We can’t keep wandering aimlessly like we were earlier."

"Just using a few small wooden sticks?" Harry’s disbelief was apparent.

Ji Nuan pointed at the sun above. "The sticks were merely tools. The real guide was the sun in the sky."

"You can... communicate with the sun?" Harry’s grip on the camel hump tightened, his voice filled with shock.

Ji Nuan thought for a moment and nodded. "Yes."

After all, communing with nature counted as communication, didn’t it? Her teacher used to say the same thing.
