Los Angeles Legendary Sleuth
Chapter 117 - 115: The Scene
Luke entered the crime scene, surrounded by a lot of photographic equipment, and there was a temporary wooden hut on the east side.
In the center was a large pit, at the bottom of which a male body was half buried, his complexion pale, with dark red blood traces faintly visible on the neck.
"Marcus, go get the person who reported the crime," Luke said, taking out his cell phone and snapping photos of the pit and the surrounding scene.
Soon, a Caucasian man was brought over, and Luke sized him up, "What should I call you?"
"I'm the assistant director of this film, Clapbo Hino, and also the one who reported the crime."
"How did you find the body?"
"Sigh..." Clapbo Hino sighed, "I came to the set this morning to check the props for today's shoot, and found that the large pit to be used for filming had been filled in, so I had someone dig it out.
To my surprise... a body was dug up. I was standing right there and almost freaked out."
"Do you recognize the person in the pit?"
"Yes, Lucas Soster, the lead actor of this film. Just last night he shot a scene of being buried alive, I never imagined...
It's really hard to believe, this film is ruined, we're done for."
Luke pointed to the wooden hut nearby, "What is that hut used for?"
Clapbo Hino replied, "It's for shooting backdrops, and also serves as a temporary rest and makeup room for actors."
Luke walked into the hut to take a look. There was a wooden table, wooden chairs, and a wooden bed—a everything was made of uncut logs.
It was somewhat similar to the little log cabins Luke had seen in wilderness survival shows.
Only a few metal boxes belonged to modern craftsmanship.
"Luke, I've found something over here," Xiao Hei's voice came from outside.
Luke walked over, "What is it?"
Xiao Hei pointed to a corner of the large pit.
Upon closer inspection, Luke noticed something shiny near the dead man's lower leg, half-buried in the mud—likely a lady's bracelet.
Luke snapped a few photos, put on gloves, and crouched down to pick up the bracelet from the pit.
A very delicate lady's diamond bracelet.
"Wow, this shiny thing doesn't look cheap," Xiao Hei remarked admiringly.
Luke took a closer look—it appeared to be silver or white gold set with some small diamonds.
The small diamonds were not valuable; they were just hyped up by diamond dealers. As for the brand and manufacturing premium, he wasn't sure—he wasn't particularly well-versed in women's jewelry.
Luke showed the diamond bracelet to the assistant director, "Do you know whose bracelet this is?"
The assistant director Clapbo Hino's eyes flickered, hesitating for a moment, "I'm not sure."
"Lying to the police isn't a good habit."
"I really don't know."
Luke took out a pen and a notebook the size of a cigarette box and wrote down Clapbo Hino's name.
Clapbo Hino glanced at it and panicked, "Why? Why write my name?"
"You know why?" Luke said, although he knew the other party might not have told the truth, he had no evidence.
Clapbo Hino opened his mouth, but ultimately said nothing more.
Soon after, the investigation team and the forensic doctor arrived at the scene.
The investigation team first checked the surrounding scene, took photos, and then helped the forensic doctor to remove the body from the pit.
Luke could see the condition of the body more clearly now.
The man's buried body was stained with fresh blood, and there were scars on his forehead and left cheek, his hands were bound, and there was a dagger stuck in the back of his neck — this seemed to be the fatal wound.
Xiao Hei also came over to take a look, "Why are there scars on his forehead and left cheek, but not on the right cheek?"
Luke analyzed accordingly, "The victim must have tried to resist before being buried in the pit. However, since his hands were tied, he could not put up an effective fight.
Personally, I feel he probably used his teeth as a weapon, and the scars on the forehead and left cheek are defensive wounds."
Luke did a test, asking Xiao Hei to try biting him with his hands behind his back; Luke blocked with his left hand as Xiao Hei turned his head and bit his left arm.
He used a pen to simulate the dagger, instinctively striking the forehead and left cheek with the blunt end first and then stabbing the sharp end into the back of the neck.
Luke reconstructed the crime based on the victim's wounds.
It could also be used to simulate the crime.
Of course, this process couldn't be entirely accurate, but it helped to conjecture the behavior of the murderer and the victim.
Xiao Hei said, "If your conjecture is correct, and the victim bit the murderer before his death, then we might be able to collect the murderer's DNA from his mouth."
Luke added, "According to this speculation, the victim might also have left a bite mark on the murderer's body.
Of course, there is another possibility: the victim did not resist and was simply kneeling there, getting beaten up, and then stabbed to death, which would make it hard to leave effective evidence."
As the two talked, Susan came over with her team and asked, "Have you found anything?"
"Yes," Luke briefly explained the situation at the scene and his analysis.
Finally, he added, "We also found a diamond bracelet in the pit."
Susan picked it up and looked at it, "This brand isn't cheap—do you know whose it is?"
"Not clear yet, just about to investigate."
"Then what are we waiting for?"
Luke looked towards Clapbo Hino standing to one side, "Assistant Director, help gather everyone together; I want to question them one by one. With so many people on set, there should be someone who knows."
The assistant director frowned, "Doing this could likely cause chaos in the crew; I don't think it's a good idea."
Luke shrugged, "That's not for me to worry about, my goal is to find the owner of the bracelet."
"OK, I'll tell you, Courtney Bass—I've seen her wearing this diamond bracelet."
"Is she also part of the crew?"
"Yes, she's the lead actress of this film."
"What's the name of the film?"
"Disappeared Lover."
Luke pointed to the dagger on the victim's neck, "Do you recognize this dagger?"
"Yes," the assistant director sighed lightly. "If I'm not mistaken, it should be a prop from the film crew."
Luke thought for a moment and asked, "I remember you said that Lucas filmed a similar scene last night. I'd like to see the footage."
"I don't have the authority to do that, should I ask the producer and director?"
"I'll wait for your good news." After saying this, Luke let the assistant director leave.
He took his dog Blackie to find the movie's lead actress, Courtney Bass.
On the way, Blackie was fiddling with his phone and said, "Luke, I looked up this movie.
The male lead is Lucas, and the female lead is Courtney, um... The female lead has a pretty hot body.
I like it."
Luke laughed, "Is there a chick you don't like?"
"I like her, and so did the victim."
"What do you mean?"
"The internet says these two got together because of the film. That's why I like the entertainment industry, hehe," Blackie said with a snicker.
Luke shook his head, "You chose the wrong career."
Soon, they found the lead actress, Courtney Bass.
Courtney Bass had somewhat of a South American mixed look, with a voluptuous figure, which was exactly Blackie's type.
Blackie's eyes kept rolling towards her.
"Are you Miss Courtney Bass?"
"That's me."
"I'm Detective Chief Luke. Could I have a word with you?"
Courtney Bass countered, "Is it true that Lucas is dead?"
"I heard you two got along well, didn't you check on him?"
"By the time I got there, the police had cordoned off the area, and I couldn't get through. Oh my god, this is just too horrible. I never imagined the movie would come true."
"Were you also involved in last night's filming?"
"Yes."
"How was Lucas's condition, was anything amiss?"
"He was fine, very dedicated in his acting, and his performance was excellent, earning high praise from the director."
Blackie asked, "Miss Courtney Bass, I'm Detective Marcus.
I saw online that you and Lucas were dating, is that true?"
"No, that's just nonsense spread online. We have only a normal work relationship, and besides, Lucas was married. Those rumors not only hurt us but also his wife."
Luke pulled out a photo of a diamond bracelet, "Is this bracelet yours?"
Courtney Bass took a look at it, "Yes, I lost it yesterday, where did you find it?"
"On Lucas's body."
Hearing this, Courtney Bass shuddered and the photo fell to the ground.
Luke observed her the whole time, noting her reaction seemed normal, as if she was just learning of this.
But considering her profession, he didn't rule out that she could be good at acting.
"Are you telling the truth?" Courtney Bass looked incredulous.
"I never lie."
"Why would my bracelet be on him?"
"That's what I want to ask you. Think carefully when you lost the bracelet and where you might have left it."
After thinking for a moment, Courtney Bass replied, "I haven't seen it since we finished filming yesterday. It might be lost in some corner. Oh yeah, I did my makeup in the cabin, I could have lost it there."
"How much is this bracelet worth?"
"Twenty thousand US dollars."
Luke pressed on, "Why wouldn't the killer take such an expensive bracelet but chose to bury it with Lucas instead?"
"I don't know," Courtney Bass said and then realized, "You're not suspecting me, are you?"
"Don't overthink it. I'm just making routine inquiries to gather more clues," Luke said, studying Courtney Bass closely. "Have you been injured recently?"
Courtney Bass shook her head, "No, can I have my bracelet back?"
"It's not possible for now. It's currently part of the evidence."
Courtney Bass's expression changed slightly, "You aren't still suspecting me, are you?
Lucas and I really had nothing to do with each other. I admit we've had some scandals, but it was all just to create buzz for the movie's release.
We had absolutely no relationship."
"How long have you been working together on the film?"
"Four months."
"That's not a short time. You must know each other quite well. Has Lucas encountered any trouble recently, or had any accidents?"
Courtney Bass pondered, "There's something I'm not sure I should say.
Actually, this film wasn't supposed to take so long to shoot, but it got delayed because Lucas was injured."
"When did he get injured, and how?"
"He was hit by a car, and the situation was very critical at that time. If his injuries had been more severe, he might not have been able to continue filming. The crew would have had to replace him.
I am innocent.
Instead of suspecting me, you might want to look into this matter."
