Los Angeles Legendary Sleuth
Chapter 51 - 51 Puzzling and Confusing
Detective Bureau, conference room.
Luke introduced the case, playing a video will on the projector.
In the video.
Lorne sat on the sofa, waving his hand, "Hi, by the time you see this video, I might already be in heaven, so don't miss me too much..."
Lorne talked to the four relatives as if chatting about family matters.
It was only after that he started to distribute his will.
Lorne's main assets included two properties and one million eight hundred thousand US Dollars, alongside a Porsche sports car.
His wife, Caroline, received one property and one million US Dollars in cash.
Both daughters jointly inherited one property and three hundred thousand US Dollars.
Brooke received two hundred thousand US Dollars.
From the estate distribution, Caroline received the most, acquiring more than half of the inheritance by herself.
The two daughters were next.
Brooke received the least from the inheritance.
The video of the will ended.
Susan asked, "What does everyone think?"
Marcus grinned, flashing his thick lips, "Wow, there are going to be three more rich widows in Los Angeles soon."
No one paid attention to him; he was collectively ignored.
David pointed out, "I think we should investigate Brooke, the least amount of money went to him.
If the written will was destroyed, in accordance with California law on inheritance, he could get half a property and four hundred and fifty thousand US Dollars.
He could announce his retirement early."
Susan looked at Luke and David, "What do you guys think of this person from your interaction with him?
"Full of lies, but he has an alibi," Luke sighed lightly. More than ten days had passed since the incident, and the evidence at the scene had long been contaminated, increasing the difficulty of the investigation.
Susan continued, "How is Lorne's condition?"
Luke replied, "He's still in a coma, there's no telling when he'll wake up. It could be ten days, half a month, or he might stay this way."
The deputy chief summed up, "According to Lorne's medical report, he experienced an electric shock before falling into a coma, which seems very similar to Daisy's case.
If both cases were committed by the same group of people, then they must have a common purpose—the written will.
Destroy the written will, and the more someone stands to gain, the greater the suspicion on them.
I suggest we look into Brooke's relationships to see if he has any accomplices.
Especially if he has any connection with Tim."
Susan instructed, "Deputy chief, I'll leave the task of investigating Brooke to you."
Additionally, from the available evidence, the main motive of the suspect seems to be obtaining the written will.
Luke, you should talk to Daisy and get the written will into police custody.
Raymond, go apply for the necessary procedures.
The rest of you should look into the situation at Lorne's home on the day of the incident to see if we can find any suspicious individuals."
"Yes, captain."
...
At two o'clock in the afternoon.
Daisy brought the written will to the detective bureau.
After looking at the written will, Susan called everyone back to the conference room for a meeting.
The written will was displayed on the projector, and after viewing it, everyone had different expressions.
The written will was completely different from the video will.
The beneficiaries of the will remained the same, but the distribution had changed.
The assets were still the two properties and one million eight hundred thousand US Dollars.
Oldest daughter Sofia received both properties and one million four hundred thousand US Dollars.
Stepson Brooke received two hundred thousand US Dollars and a Porsche sports car.
Wife Caroline received one hundred thousand US Dollars.
Youngest daughter Emma received one hundred thousand US Dollars.
Apart from these funds and properties, there were some miscellaneous items like jewelry, furniture, oil paintings, golf clubs, and other odds and ends.
But not of high value.
Lorne chuckled, "It seems Mr. Lorne wasn't as simple as we thought, having set up both a public and private will.
Sofia is the real winner here, her stepmother is probably going to faint on the toilet.
Looking at how the inheritance was divided, it was definitely a 'united and friendly' happy family."
Jenny frowned, "I think there's something wrong with this will. Even if Lorne didn't get along with his wife, what about his younger daughter?
Even if Lorne favored his older daughter, Brooke was just his stepson, and it's totally irrational for him to receive more inheritance than his younger daughter."
Marcus let out a sleazy chuckle, "Jenny, have you ever watched The Maury Show?"
Jenny said sternly, "We're discussing a case here, can you take this seriously, OK?"
"Hey, I am discussing the case. I had a buddy who went on The Maury Show..."
As he spoke, Marcus couldn't help laughing, "This guy also had two daughters, he adored the older one, even had her name tattooed on his body. But he didn't like the younger one, never even held her once. Do you know why?"
Without waiting for an answer, Marcus burst into laughter again, "The younger one was whiter than his teeth, hehe…
For such an obvious thing, he still went on The Maury Show, oh my god…"
Susan, with a stern face, interrupted him, "Marcus, next time focus on the analysis of the case, skip the examples."
"I just thought it'd be more illustrative."
"No need to be that illustrative, I can understand."
"OK, you're the boss."
David said, "The deputy team leader mentioned this morning that after the written will was destroyed, whoever benefits the most becomes the biggest suspect.
In that case, Lorne's wife Caroline and younger daughter Emma are more suspect."
Luke had a different opinion, "You're overlooking one thing, only two people have seen the written will, Lorne and Daisy.
Caroline and Emma wouldn't even know the difference between the written will and the video will, let alone the specific details of the distribution.
This means they have no motive to commit the crime."
Luke paused and continued, "I'm more inclined to suspect Sofia and Brooke.
After Lorne was attacked, Sofia was the first to arrive at the scene. Lorne had been beaten and abused; there must have been traces at the scene.
Also, Brooke was Lorne's attending physician, and he deliberately concealed Lorne's injuries.
The two of them could have easily concealed how Lorne was injured, and that's exactly what seems to have happened."
Jenny shook her head, "It doesn't make sense. If the culprit were Sofia, she would have just let Lorne die, there was no need to call 911 for help.
Plus, the culprit might have tidied up the scene when leaving, meaning Sofia may not have noticed."
Luke continued his analysis, "It's precisely because Sofia didn't know the content of the written will that she called for help to save Lorne, hoping to make him grateful and change the will content to get more of the inheritance afterward."
The deputy team leader thought for a while and then said, "Actually, I've been wondering why Lorne would make a will, a written one would have sufficed, why create both a public and secret one?"
David laughed, "Considering everything, all four beneficiaries are suspects. Why not just arrest them all, go big or go home, what do you say?"
Marcus spread his hands, "What are you thinking in that head of yours all day?"
Luke teased, "I don't know what David's thinking, but you're definitely thinking about women."
David and Luke fist-bumped.
Marcus muttered under his breath, "A pair of dickheads with perfect chemistry."
They discussed for a while, but without evidence, no one could convince the others or form a unified line of investigation.
"Dong dong…" A knocking sound came from outside the conference room.
"Come in."
Matthew walked into the conference room, "Sorry for the interruption, I've found some clues that might be related to Lorne's assault case."
"OK, let's have a guess," the deputy team leader said confidently, "My guess is it's related to Caroline."
David inquired, "Following your usual theory, when one spouse is victimized, the other is often the prime suspect?"
"Is there a problem?"
"No." David shook his head, "My guess is Emma. She hasn't come to the hospital today; maybe she has a guilty conscience."
"I'll guess Brooke," Marcus stroked his stubbled chin, "Is there a prize if I'm right?"
Luke said, "I think both Brooke and Sofia are suspects. It could very well be them working together."
Susan glared at everyone and said sternly, "Matthew, just tell us the clue."
"I just reviewed the road surveillance.
On February 26th, the day Lorne was attacked, Tony Will was spotted near Lorne's house."
