Los Angeles Legendary Sleuth
Chapter 79 - 79 Accident
Thompson glanced at Luke, "You're in the wrong place. There's no party here."
Andrew reminded his father, "He's the fat kid's brother."
Thomson lifted his chin, "Oh, the whole family's here, more people means more power.
Hmph, I'm not afraid of you."
Luke ignored him, "Jack, what's going on?"
"After school yesterday, Andrew tried to trouble me again, and he hit me first. But he's trash, and it ended up with me beating him up."
Luke patted his brother's shoulder, "Well done."
"What?" Hearing Luke's words, Thompson became even more dissatisfied and questioned Linda, "Is this the family education you provide? My son gets beaten and he actually says 'well done.' This matter isn't over, I will pursue it to the end."
Luke lit a cigarette and took a drag, "How do you want to pursue it? Let's hear it."
Thompson glared at Luke, "Are you the fat kid's guardian? What right do you have to speak to me?"
Luke offered him a cigarette, "I'm here to solve a problem, not to cause a conflict with you."
Thompson refused Luke's cigarette, "I made myself very clear earlier, compensate for my son's medical expenses and emotional distress, and also have the fat kid apologize to my son and stay more than a hundred meters away from him."
Luke said, "It's normal for kids their age to have conflicts, it's hard to tell who's right and who's wrong, a few words from adults should suffice, is there a need to be so serious?"
"There is a need. I absolutely will not allow anyone to beat my son."
"Maybe your son is the one bullying others?"
"No, my son would never do such a thing, and look at their faces, isn't it obvious enough? As a father, my son has been beaten, I must seek justice."
Luke looked at Andrew, then at the fat kid, and had to admit that the fat kid had really shown courage this time, having given Andrew a good thrashing.
"Andrew, don't you have anything to say?"
Andrew glared at Luke, "The fat kid hit me first."
"I don't know who started it this time, but last time, I saw with my own eyes you hitting Jack first. Shouldn't you apologize to him first?"
Andrew denied it, "No, I never hit him first."
Luke said, "You're lying."
Thompson stood in front of his son, "Hey, do you have any evidence? Don't accuse my son without proof, otherwise, you better watch out."
Luke walked over to the Harley, took off the dash cam, "This thing doesn't lie."
Luke showed everyone the video of the last fight between the fat kid and Andrew.
Andrew's face changed instantly.
Linda, seeing the video for the first time, became angry when she saw her younger son being pinned down and beaten. "It's obviously Andrew hitting my son, and you still have the nerve to ask for compensation, you shameless bastard.
Get out of my yard, now!"
Thompson's expression turned awkward as he glared at his son, "Come home with me."
Luke stepped in front of them, "This isn't over yet."
"What do you want?"
"An apology."
"What?"
"Apologize to my brother."
"OK, I admit that last time it was Andrew who hit your brother, but this time your brother hit Andrew too, so it's even."
"You're right, the fighting is even now.
But Andrew lied. He started the trouble and then slandered my brother. How are we going to settle that?"
Thompson pushed his son, "Look at the great thing you've done."
Knowing his father wouldn't shield him anymore, Andrew reluctantly said, "Sorry, I was wrong for lying."
"Let's go." Thompson grabbed his son's clothes to leave.
"Stop." Luke blocked him, "You need to apologize too."
Thompson responded unhappily, "Why should I apologize?"
"Your son lied, and not only did you cover for him, but you also had the audacity to demand compensation and criticize my mother's parenting.
The one with a problem in parenting is you, not my mother.
You must apologize."
Hearing her eldest son speak this way, Linda felt the stifling pressure in her chest dissipate.
Raising two children as a single mother wasn't easy.
Her son had grown up and was now standing up for her.
This feeling... it's very good.
Thompson placed his hands on his hips, "I don't want any trouble; we're adults, and the matter is over."
Luke rolled up his sleeves, "Whether it's over or not isn't up to you. If you don't apologize, I'll hit you."
Thompson turned to Linda, "Ma'am, don't you think you should say something?"
Linda smiled, "Do as he says, he really will hit you."
"I don't want to cause trouble, but I'm not afraid of it either," Thompson said, assuming a pose that said he was not to be trifled with.
Luke took off his coat, handed his gun and badge to his brother for safekeeping, and gestured to Thompson, "Then let's cut the talk, come on."
Thompson swallowed, LAPD was not to be messed with, and LAPD without a badge was even less inviting to provoke.
"Hey, I don't want to fight in front of the kids, that would set a bad example. Indeed, it was Andrew who messed up, and as a father, it's my duty to educate him..."
Thompson looked at Linda, "Sorry, my fault, I didn't bring up Andrew right."
"Keep him away from my son," Linda said before turning and walking back into the house.
Thompson never dared make eye contact with Luke and left with his son feeling dejected.
"Hey, big bro, did you see that? He totally chickened out!" the little chubby boy said with an excited expression.
Luke flexed his bicep, "I didn't train for nothing."
The chubby boy looked up in admiration, "Are you going to teach me again today?"
"Of course, as long as Mom doesn't mind her lawn."
...
The next morning.
At the Detective Bureau.
Luke was smoking at the bottom of the Detective Bureau stairs.
A white Toyota pulled into the station, and a woman in her twenties stepped out of the driver's side.
When the woman saw Luke, she hesitated for a moment, "Officer Luke."
"Hey, Sofia. What brings you to the station?"
"Yes, it's about my father," she replied.
Luke put out his cigarette, "You know already?"
Sofia nodded, "I... I've come to bring him to surrender."
Luke realized he had misunderstood, "Lorne?"
"My father is in the car; he's come to turn himself in voluntarily."
"Good, take me to him."
Luke walked over to the car. Lorne opened the door himself and got out, looking much healthier than the last time Luke had seen him.
"Dad, this is Officer Luke, he's the one investigating your case," she said.
"Officer Luke, I've come to surrender myself. Sorry for causing you trouble," Lorne said.
"Come with me," Luke led the father and daughter up into the Detective Bureau building.
"Knock, knock..."
Luke knocked on the office door before bringing them inside.
Everyone in the office looked towards the doorway.
Luke was the first to enter, and Marcus grinned, revealing his thick lips, "Did you really need to knock..."
He didn't finish the sentence, his eyes bulging, "Oh my god, Luke, didn't you just go out for a smoke? How did you end up bringing Lorne back?"
Luke smiled, "Mr. Lorne has come of his own accord."
The people in the room had varied expressions.
The deputy stood up, "Mr. Lorne, please come with me to the lounge. Jenny, call the Captain."
Luke followed them into the conference room.
The deputy turned on the law enforcement recorder, "Lorne, you can speak now. What brings you here to surrender yourself?"
Lorne sighed softly, "Many years ago, I did something wrong. I illegally took possession of someone else's property, and I feel very guilty about it. I'm here to make it clear, to atone."
"Are you talking about the 'Telson Manor Disappearance' case?"
"Yes."
"Describe the events and your accomplices."
After a long pause, Lorne began telling the story of what had happened all those years ago...
