Los Angeles Legendary Sleuth
Chapter 86: Renting a House
Becca Community.
Luke's grandfather lived here, just a ten-minute drive from the Eno community.
Harley parked in front of a white villa where a tall white-haired old man was tending a barbecue grill, none other than Luke's grandfather, Robert Sullivan.
"Wow, Luke, glad to see you still remember where my house is. I thought our next meeting would be at my funeral."
"Grandpa, I've been wanting to come, but there's always some nonsense in the police station, you know." Luke took out a bottle of whiskey from under the car seat, "A little gift for you."
"Don't think a bottle can..." Robert took the whiskey, pausing mid-sentence, "Oh, this isn't a cheap one."
"Glad you like it."
"Welcome to the gathering."
"Hey, isn't that Luke?" A burly white man with a large beard came out of the house, his head swaying as if he was a bit drunk.
"Hi, Val, long time no see."
The man greeting was Luke's uncle Val Sullivan.
"Beer?"
"Sure."
The bearded man tossed Luke a bottle of beer.
"Where's my dear sister and the little chub?"
Luke took a sip of beer, "Should be on their way."
The bearded man nodded and plopped down into a white chair nearby, the legs sinking deep into the mud.
Luke walked to the barbecue grill, "Grandpa, need a hand?"
"Unless I'm dead, no one touches my grill."
"OK, you're the boss." The old man didn't want help, and Luke was happy to relax.
"Whoo..."
A car drove into the yard, parking next to the garage.
Luke's grandpa's house was a bit bigger than his mom's, and accommodating two cars didn't feel crowded.
Linda and the little fat boy got out of the car.
"Dad."
"Grandpa."
Robert snapped his fingers, "OK, everyone is here, family dinner officially starts."
The little fat boy exaggeratedly said, "Wow, Uncle Val, long time no see."
"Yeah, last time was Christmas. I got you a Lion King DVD."
The little fat boy shrugged, "You're so thoughtful. The Lion King DVD was the birthday present I wanted most when I was seven, and I'm thirteen now."
"A belated surprise is still great, isn't it?"
Linda glared at her brother, "What are you doing here?"
"Today is Family Day, and I'm part of this family too."
"Be honest."
The bearded man sighed, "Listen, I broke up with my girlfriend, actually, I dumped her, so... I need to stay here with dad for a while.
He's lonely by himself, and it's good to have some company."
Robert objected, "I don't need it. I'm fine on my own."
"No, Dad, you need it."
"Shut up!"
Linda sighed and said to her brother, "Val, you're over thirty now, you should be a mature man.
I don't want to keep... correcting your mistakes like before.
But you should be independent, like a real man, set a good example for your nephew.
Not just mess around all day, understand?"
The bearded man held up his beer bottle, "Yes, Mom."
Looking at her unkempt brother, Linda was somewhat speechless. Luke had been influenced by him before, but fortunately, he had matured.
But when Val would mature, she had no idea.
"The barbecue is ready!" Robert called out.
Linda played a song.
Luke brought over plates.
Val carried a bucket of chilled beer.
The little fat boy couldn't wait and grabbed a piece of barbecue, grimacing from the heat, eliciting bursts of laughter from Robert.
"Haha, such a greedy kid, I like it."
The barbecue consisted of steak, sausages, chicken wings, pork ribs, lobster, and potatoes
"Wow... quite a feast." Not just the little fat boy, Luke was getting hungry too.
Robert sat at the head of the table, scanning the crowd, "Not only is the food plentiful, it's delicious as well. But the number of people eating keeps dwindling.
A family needs to keep growing, having new members join to maintain the family's vitality.
But look at our family, it's shrinking.
I'm divorced now.
Linda had divorced.
Val …
Luke, Jack, don't follow in our footsteps, the future of this family rests on you two.
"I hope to see this dining table filled with people during my lifetime, even if it's just once."
Robert raised his glass, "Let's toast to the family of the future."
"To the family of the future," everyone else raised their glasses in response.
Aside from some unpleasantness at the start of the gathering, everyone ended up having a great time.
Robert's barbecue was delicious, he was experienced, and humorous as well.
Val was somewhat unreliable, had gotten drunk not long after the party started, and had shared many of his embarrassing stories, making everyone laugh out loud.
All in all, the family gathering was quite good.
…
The next morning.
After eating the breakfast Daisy made, Luke rode off on his Harley.
Today he had contacted a real estate agency to look at houses.
The person showing him the houses was named Liu Wei, a person of Chinese descent.
Luke figured the real estate agency must have seen his application details, knew he was of Chinese descent, thus they assigned him a Chinese agent.
Normally, apart from speaking a few sentences in Chinese with his chubby friend, Luke seldomly had the opportunity to speak Chinese, so it was a good opportunity to chat in his hometown dialect.
The real estate agent greeted him proactively, "Mr. Lee, nice to meet you, I am your real estate agent, Wei Liu."
"Mr. Liu Wei, it's fine if you speak Chinese."
"Your Chinese is really standard, I am inferior to you in this aspect," Liu Wei said with a look of surprise, his speech carrying a slight dialect accent.
"I have selected 5 properties according to your specifications, if you have no other requirements, let's head out now."
"Let's go."
In the application details, Luke had listed a few specific conditions for renting.
In terms of transportation, the distance to the detective bureau should not exceed a half-hour drive.
Budget-wise, it should not exceed two thousand dollars.
His stable salary was only 6500 dollars, and after taxes, was less than five thousand dollars. If it weren't for the painting prize money and the Detective System, he wouldn't want to spend forty percent of his income on rent.
The living environment should have good neighborhood security, be a detached house, fully functional, and furnished.
This summary made him realize that his rental requirements were not low.
Before long, the two drove up to a two-story detached villa.
Liu Wei got out of the car and led Luke into the yard, "Mr. Lee, this villa has two floors, three bedrooms, two living rooms, two bathrooms, and comes with a basement and a garage.
The monthly rent is two thousand dollars, about half an hour from the detective bureau, and a ten-minute drive from the nearest shopping center, which is quite convenient."
"Can we go inside to have a look?"
"Of course, please follow me," Liu Wei opened the door and led Luke into the villa.
Once inside, Luke was somewhat disappointed. The interior decoration of the villa was mediocre, and the facilities were quite outdated. Although there were two bathrooms, both were quite small.
Luke only took a brief look around before coming out.
"Let's look at the other houses."
"Mr. Lee, what specifically did you not like? I can help you select a more suitable house,"
"The house is a bit old, and the bathrooms are too small. The rest is fine, and since I usually live alone, I don't need that many rooms."
Through actual viewings, Liu Wei could more accurately gauge Luke's rental needs.
Normally, he wouldn't show the best houses on the first tour, as this could raise the client's expectations too high.
Soon, he took Luke to see the second property.
The house was in the Reido Community.
It was a white, single-story, detached house with two bedrooms, two living rooms, two bathrooms, a complete kitchen, and a garage, and the yard was not too small either.
Luke went into the house to inspect it. The decor was not luxurious but was tidy, clean, and the furnishings were fairly complete.
The bathroom with a bathtub was quite spacious, and Luke could definitely take a bath in there.
Luke walked around the house a few times and also checked out the yard.
Liu Wei did not interrupt Luke or offer explanations on his own but silently followed him, answering any questions Luke had. From his experience, Liu Wei could tell that Luke felt good about this property.
It looked promising.
After viewing the house, Luke asked proactively, "How much is this house?"
"1800 dollars.
Because it is a single-level, it's slightly smaller than the previous villa, but the lot size is not small.
Additionally, this community is a Chinese community; there are Chinese restaurants and shops at the community square. I often come to this community's restaurant to eat. As long as you order in Chinese, you can have authentic Chinese cuisine."
Luke asked in return, "And if I order in English?"
"Then it's the modified version, more suited to Western tastes."
"Sounds good, I'll give it a try."
Afterwards, Luke looked at three more properties. All were quite nice, but overall, the single-story detached house in Reido Community best suited his needs.
Eventually, he decided to rent this house.
In Los Angeles, he finally had a home of his own.
