CHAPTER 379: CHAPTER 373: FISHING AND ELIMINATING THE MOLE_2
"Speak! How much money do you need?" The envoy asked directly.
"My boss instructed me to meet with your leader, Prince Menshikov!" The Greek youth said arrogantly to the envoy.
The envoy clearly understood that the other party wanted to bypass him and speak directly to the source.
Unwilling, the envoy put on a formal face and said, "I am not sure if your intelligence is accurate and do not dare to introduce you to His Highness the Prince rashly!"
"Without meeting him, I will not speak!" The other party responded to the envoy, maintaining a stubborn silence.
After a while, the envoy gave in and quickly gestured to the other party, saying, "Alright, alright! Follow me!"
The Greek youth revealed a victorious smile.
With intelligence in hand, the envoy naturally dared not delay and departed the opera house with the Greek youth, taking a carriage to the embassy together.
During the journey to the embassy, the envoy did not forget to threaten and cajole the Greek youth in hopes of extracting some information from him. Unfortunately, the Greek youth was adamantly silent.
He insisted that he would only speak after meeting with Menshikov.
Helplessly, the envoy remained sullenly silent.
The carriage stopped at the Russian Embassy, and the envoy and the Greek youth entered the embassy.
Afterwards, the envoy settled the Greek youth on a sofa and went up to the second floor of the embassy to summon Prince Menshikov downstairs.
In no time, Prince Menshikov slowly descended the stairs and approached the Greek youth.
"So, it’s you who wants to trade with me?" Menshikov curiously sized up the young Greek youth before him.
"That’s right! But, to be more precise, there are some people behind me who want to propose a deal with you!" The youth cryptically hinted at his origins, then sized up Menshikov and asked, "Are you Menshikov?"
"I am Menshikov!" Menshikov replied gravely.
"Someone has entrusted me to sell you some information! I wonder if you are willing to buy it!" The Greek youth’s face still bore a smile as he leisurely inquired.
"What kind of information?" Menshikov immediately became interested and asked with a smile.
"Information about France!" The Russian envoy hurriedly explained to Menshikov.
"Did I ask you to speak?" Menshikov asked with slight annoyance.
The envoy could only close his mouth and listen.
"I have to see if this information is worthwhile!" Prince Menshikov replied to the Greek youth.
"I guarantee it’s worth it!" The Greek youth patted his chest in assurance.
"How much are you pricing this piece of information?" Menshikov inquired about the price of the information.
"Twenty-five... no, two hundred thousand rubles!" The Greek youth raised two fingers towards Menshikov.
"Two hundred thousand rubles!" Menshikov was astonished by the exorbitant price demanded by the Greek youth, "That’s no small sum!"
"My intelligence is definitely worth the price!" The Greek youth responded once again to Menshikov.
Knowing that the Greek youth likely had insiders from the French Embassy behind him, Menshikov hesitated but then gritted his teeth and nodded, "Deal! Two hundred thousand rubles it is!"
"Then bring it here!" The Greek youth extended his hand, making a gesture as if counting money.
"Make a withdrawal of 200,000 rubles from the embassy’s account for this... friend," Prince Menshikov referred to the Greek youth as "friend" after a moment of hesitation.
The envoy had no choice but to comply with Menshikov’s command and withdrew 200,000 rubles from the embassy account.
The envoy handed the 200,000 rubles in notes to the Greek youth, explaining, "These notes are from the renowned Rothschild Clan. With these notes, you can converse with any Rothschild Clan bank across Europe!"
"Got it!" The Greek youth’s face displayed an impatient expression.
Immediately following, the Greek youth conveyed the intelligence to Menshikov.
"What! The French Empire is deploying its fleet!" Menshikov’s expression changed instantly, knowing that once the French Army deployed its fleet, the Russian Empire’s ambitions would undoubtedly become a mirage.
Just before that, he had instructed Kornilov to defeat the Ottoman Empire Navy as swiftly as possible, leaving no excuse for interference from England and France.
Yet now, he heard that the French intended to support the Ottoman Empire and had given the envoy the right to rapidly dispatch warships.
Menshikov felt the situation was thorny; he must find an opportunity to visit the French Embassy to negotiate an understanding.
"This intelligence is important, isn’t it?" The Greek youth’s voice rang in Menshikov’s ears again.
"This information is very important to me!" Coming back to his senses, Menshikov expressed his gratitude to the Greek youth, giving him an additional 10,000 rubles and telling him it was a personal thank-you.
"Thank you!" The Greek youth expressed his gratitude to Menshikov.
Subsequently, with twenty-one thousand rubles, the Greek youth prepared to leave the Russian Embassy.
The envoy "enthusiastically" stopped him and said, "Where are you going? My carriage can give you a ride!"
The Greek youth’s inner alarm bells instantly went off, and he smiled, declining the envoy’s invitation, "No need! I prefer walking over taking a carriage!"
"Then I won’t impose," the envoy said with a slight sigh of regret.
Not long after the Greek youth left, the envoy, under Menshikov’s watchful eye, dispatched a military officer from the embassy to follow and uncover the man behind the Greek youth.
An hour later, the officer returned to the embassy, reporting to the envoy and Menshikov that he had lost track of the target.
Unless the official forces of the Ottoman were utilized, it would be difficult to locate him again.
"Useless!" Menshikov couldn’t help but shout angrily.
Meanwhile, the Greek youth, who successfully shook off the officer, did not return home immediately; instead, he circled half of Constantinople before returning to his slum dwelling late at night.
"Klein, how did it go?" No sooner did the Greek youth enter the room than he heard someone calling his name.
Constantin Klein, that was the Greek youth’s name, and the person addressing him was the mastermind behind the whole affair, who was also a deputy military officer at the French Embassy.
He was casually fiddling with a revolver, looking at Klein absentmindedly.
"It’s sold! Here is 200,000 rubles!" The Greek youth handed the notes to the deputy military officer.
"Is that all? Nothing more?" The deputy officer pointed the revolver at Constantin Klein.
"N-no more!" Constantin Klein recalled the additional 10,000 rubles given to him by Menshikov at the Russian Embassy. Menshikov had told him, "You’re a clever lad; this money is rightfully yours!"
That additional 10,000 rubles was my due reward!
Constantin Klein kept reminding himself, his gaze growing increasingly determined.
Finding no clue in Constantin Klein’s eyes, the deputy officer holstered the revolver and warned him harshly, "Don’t try any tricks on me, or you’ll end up dead in a very unpleasant way!"
"I won’t!" Constantin Klein flashed a fawning smile and said, "My sister, my family is still in your hands. I would never act rashly!"
"Good to know!" The deputy officer took out ten silver coins, each worth 20 kurus: "Here’s your pay for this job!"
Klein feigned delight, repeatedly thanked him, and accepted the silver coins.
"My parents, my sister..." Klein asked about the whereabouts of his family.
"Don’t worry! They will return safe and sound! You are a smart kid; our cooperation will continue!" The deputy officer responded to Constantin Klein before leaving the slum.
After the deputy officer left for a while, Klein let out a hideous curse, "Bastard!"
If not for his family being in the hands of that damned man, he wouldn’t do all these things.
That night, Constantin Klein did not await the return of his parents and sister.
While a certain unfortunate deputy officer became a poor corpse in Constantinople.
The one who killed him was none other than a servant residing at the French Embassy.
