Married First, Loved Later : A Flash Marriage with My Ex's 'Uncle'
Chapter 530: The Perfect Chance to Investigate
CHAPTER 530: THE PERFECT CHANCE TO INVESTIGATE
When Selina finished speaking, silence lingered for a moment before Logan gave a short, mocking laugh. "What you said is very likely true."
But even if it was, he would never forgive the Perry Family.
"Out of the way! Move aside!" Suddenly, several men’s voices rang out. Selina instinctively turned her head.
This was a hotel under the Reid Group—few dared cause trouble here. The tone of those voices was clearly hostile. Were they here to stir up trouble?
But when she turned, she realized she had overthought it. The ones speaking were bodyguards, barking at people to move aside while fawning over the woman in the middle.
"Miss Paula, we’ll clear the area for you right away. Please, this way."
Selina frowned. "Who’s that?"
Logan’s eyes narrowed.
The hotel manager quickly rushed to calm the guests who had just been shoved aside, then stepped forward. "Miss, our hotel does not offer private clearings. Please instruct your bodyguards not to disturb other guests."
Paula let out a cold snort, and one of her bodyguards snapped, "This is Miss Paula, daughter of Duke William. She’s traveled a long way here. Is this how you treat her?"
Selina arched a brow, her gaze landing on the so-called Miss Paula.
Next to Country M were several small nations—small, yes, but wealthy and influential. Country Y was the richest and most powerful among them.
Duke William belonged to the royal family. His daughter was royalty too. It was one thing for her to strut around like a tyrant in Country Y, but here, in someone else’s territory, demanding to be worshipped—what sense was that?
Hearing she was Duke William’s daughter, the manager’s heart sank. He could only turn to Logan for instruction. Mishandling a foreign royal could mean endless trouble.
Logan’s response was calm, almost indifferent. "Either follow the rules—or leave."
The manager nodded. "Yes, sir."
At that moment, Miss Paula looked across the hall. Her eyes lit up, and she whispered excitedly to her bodyguards, "That man. I want him. Go bring him to me!"
Her butler started forward, but when he got a clear look at Logan’s face, he hesitated. "Miss Paula, that man is a good friend of the Country Y royal family, connected with several members. He’s also the head of the Reid Group, Mr. Logan."
The implication was clear: even as a duke’s daughter, she couldn’t simply seize him. Not when his ties to the royal family ran that deep. How would the duke explain such behavior to them?
Paula bit her lip in frustration. But then her eyes brightened again. "Logan... as in, related to the Reid Family?"
The butler nodded. "Yes, Miss. I recall Mrs. Reid once invited you to stay with the family. Mrs. Reid, I hear, is Mr. Reid’s mother. Perhaps you could ask her to assist you with this."
Paula’s eyes darted with calculation.
Meanwhile, the manager was still trying to smooth things over, thinking how every other member of Country Y’s royal family had always been gracious and polite when they visited. How could a duke’s daughter be so arrogant?
Rumor had it that Paula was notorious back home for being lawless. Plain-looking, she was jealous of beautiful women and often tormented those prettier than her but of lower status. People had long suffered under her cruelty.
The manager glanced up, caught sight of Paula’s face, and shivered involuntarily. Just as he was about to speak again, news came from Paula’s butler—she had decided to check in without demanding the place be cleared.
The manager let out a sigh of relief. He had no idea why Paula changed her mind, but as long as she didn’t stir up trouble, it was fine.
Selina didn’t give the incident a second thought.
Two days later, still mulling over Mrs. Cole’s words and debating how to probe the Perry Family, Selina was wondering what excuse she could use—when Logan received a phone call.
"Logan, last time your mother was just confused for a moment."
On the other end of the line, Amelia wept as though she were truly a loving mother. "My birthday is coming up soon. Can’t you come back to see me, just once?"
Logan sneered. "Mrs. Perry, you’re crying to the wrong person."
Amelia choked on her words. "I’ll have Owen apologize to you too. He only made mistakes because he wanted too badly to surpass you. There are guests at home now... If you don’t come back, I’ll just have to bring them to visit Grandma Perry. After all—"
"You’re threatening me?" Logan’s voice was cold.
Amelia’s heart trembled, but the lure of immense wealth made her grit her teeth. "How could you say that? I haven’t been back to the Perry Family in so long. You—"
Logan was about to hang up when he noticed the sudden sparkle in Selina’s eyes. His tone shifted, cold and flat: "You want to go?" He hung up immediately after.
Selina blinked. "Perfect chance to see if Amelia has ever drugged the Perry Family."
Logan had no objection. "Let’s go."
Ever since Owen’s failed "coup," with both him and Amelia humiliated before ninety million viewers, the Reid Family had been cloaked in gloom—refusing visitors, hardly stepping outside.
But today, Selina immediately sensed something different.
The atmosphere wasn’t heavy at all. On the contrary, everyone wore faint smiles.
Several side-branch members of the Reid Family, who usually clung to Daniel, now looked at Logan without their usual fear. Instead, their eyes held strange, knowing expressions.
"Haha..."
"No wonder that lady took a liking to him..."
"Keep your voice down, don’t let him hear!"
Selina tilted her head in curiosity. "Those Reid side-branches—are they praising your looks?"
Logan’s eyes stayed forward, ignoring them entirely.
Selina grew even more curious. Normally, these branches would never dare offend Logan. After that infamous livestream, with Amelia and Owen forced to cower in shame, they had been even less likely to provoke him.
So how could they, today of all days, dare to say such mocking things about Logan’s looks—right to his face? Something must have happened.
That thought led her to another question. "Why haven’t you taken action against the Reid Family yet?"
Logan suddenly stopped walking, his expression carrying layers of meaning. "What makes you so sure I haven’t?"
Selina blinked. "Huh?"
He said nothing more, only inclined his head slightly. "Let’s go in. But even if Amelia has been drugging people, you won’t be able to see it. Otherwise she would’ve been exposed decades ago."
Selina nodded. "I know. I’ve observed Amelia before and saw nothing. I also know it wouldn’t show. Just work with me in a moment."
Logan’s lips curved in indulgence. "Alright."
Amelia was already waiting in the living room. Remembering Miss Paula’s instructions, she forced a wide smile onto her face. The sound of footsteps made her spring up. "Logan—"
But the word froze in her throat when her eyes fell on the woman at Logan’s side. Her expression shifted instantly. "Why are you here?!"
Damn it! She had only asked Logan to return to the Reid Family. Why had Selina tagged along? How shameless could she be!
Selina walked over on her own, taking a seat casually. Lifting her gaze at Amelia’s outburst, she feigned surprise. "I recall Mrs. Perry once said she wouldn’t make things difficult for Logan again—that she’d fulfill a mother’s duty?"
