Marvel: Hunter
Chapter 187: Avengers
These two blows seemed extremely ferocious, but in fact, they had already consumed almost 80% of Electro's energy. After all, in that moment, how much electricity could he really absorb?
The raised lightning fist, glowing with a faint blue light, aimed directly at Spider-Man's head. In the next second, it could have become the hand of Death itself.
Suddenly, a sharp roar split the sky. A missile streaked down, leaving a long exhaust trail as it rushed straight toward Electro.
Electro reacted instantly, whipping up an electric grid to block it. But on closer look, this missile was painted in red and gold.
The missile exploded mercilessly. Fortunately, its force had been weakened by nearly half when Electro intercepted it, sparing Spider-Man from the blast. The detonation still hurled Electro backward.
"Who—who's there? Come out!"
Rumble~~~
Buzz, buzz, buzz~~~
High above, a stealth fighter hovered. Wasn't that the black eagle insignia of S.H.I.E.L.D.? And at the front of the craft—if not Iron Man, then who else could it be but Tony Stark?
The fighter stopped in midair, its tail hatch opening. Captain America descended with his shield on his back—no parachute needed—and landed steadily, immediately moving to lift the battered Spider-Man off the ground and evacuate him from the battlefield.
From the rear of the plane appeared Hawkeye, Black Widow, and Nick Fury himself—everyone except Banner. The Avengers had arrived.
Blaine had been in shock ever since Spider-Man was struck down and S.H.I.E.L.D. suddenly appeared. What was going on? Just for Electro, they'd dispatched the Avengers? Blaine was dumbfounded. Was this really because of him? Because of Electro's appearance, was the Marvel world about to descend into chaos?
"No matter how powerful Electro is, he can't cause that much trouble," Blaine thought. "It's definitely not what I imagined. Seems like Spider-Man really is the team's favorite."
He could only comfort himself with that thought.
At the same time, Electro was thinking along the same lines. What the hell is this? Are all of them here just for me? I'm not an alien! Why are so many heroes showing up? Seeing the odds turn against him, Electro immediately turned and fled without hesitation.
On the other hand, the Avengers didn't seem interested in chasing him. It was as if they knew Electro was too troublesome to subdue right now. Instead, they focused on Spider-Man.
"These idiots… they're only here to save Spider-Man? Letting the tiger return to the mountain like this will cost them later…" Blaine thought bitterly. A reckless idea began to sprout in his mind.
S.H.I.E.L.D. seemed to share his thoughts, treating Electro as just a minor threat while seeing Spider-Man as too young and inexperienced. With so many Avengers gathered, they surrounded Peter to check on his condition.
"Long time no see, Fury."
"Oh… Mr. Hunter. We just saw you the other day."
Blaine appeared beside them without warning. Fury was startled at first, then immediately scowled at the sound of his voice. His expression grew darker by the second.
"It's a coincidence," Blaine said mockingly.
'I just got swindled out of six billion, and the last billion wasn't even fair. Someone showed me a fake picture and ran off with my prize. Woooo…'
'If it weren't for not knowing your full details, I'd—' Fury thought, then paused, realizing Blaine might actually hear his thoughts. Wait, no. Wrong. Wrong.
Blaine, well aware of Fury's suspicions, ignored him. "I've got a proposal. I don't know if you'll hear me out. Just…"
'Mr. Hunter, I don't think I ever said I would…' Fury thought inwardly, but outwardly his face showed attentiveness.
Cheap old fox, Blaine sneered inwardly, deciding to play along.
"Why don't you hire me? I'll bring that guy back." He gestured toward the direction Electro had escaped.
"Mr. Hunter, don't worry. He's already in the bag. No way he gets far."
"Oh? How so?"
"Tony's bomb was equipped with S.H.I.E.L.D.'s top tracking tech. Do you think Electro can escape that? Even if he runs now, as the saying goes, he can dodge the monk but not the temple. He's already a turtle in the urn."
Fury smirked, clearly satisfied, savoring his rare chance to get the better of the Bounty Hunter.
"Are you sure?"
"Absolutely. He won't detect this kind of tracker. It's synced with S.H.I.E.L.D.'s independent satellite network—no matter where he hides, we'll find him. Combined with Vibranium casing—fireproof, waterproof, electricity-resistant—you see my point."
Fury felt this was foolproof. "You've never seen tech like this. This time, no tricks. No more letting you scam me every time. Heh…" He stopped, catching himself. "Uh, I got carried away. My bad."
Blaine smirked. This guy curses me in his head and then apologizes. Ridiculous. Aloud, he only said, "We'll see. Just hope you don't shoot yourself in the foot." Then he turned and disappeared.
"I didn't expect that to work," Fury muttered. "I hope this isn't bad luck talking…"
"Or maybe I've got the curse of Conan—wherever I go, trouble follows."
Later, lying on his bed, Blaine thought it over. He believed Fury's words but felt they underestimated Electro. His instincts told him this wasn't as simple as S.H.I.E.L.D. believed. Since you don't want to hire me, let's see who lasts till the end.
By then, it was already the eighth day of his system upgrade.
The next morning, while brushing his teeth, Blaine turned on the TV as usual to see if anything had happened overnight.
