CHAPTER 70: I AM PREGNANT

Bruce sat on the wheelchair, while Horton stood behind him. The two of them were pleasing to the eye and slowly approached them.

Horton was like a fox and his eyes under gold-rimmed spectacles were always narrowed. He always wore a faint smile.

Bruce had a serious expression on his face, and he always had a cold aura. Only when his gaze fell on Hilla would he look a little gentler.

"Are your legs better?"

When Hilla saw Bruce, she gave a bright smile. Then, she walked forward and squatted in front of Bruce, looking at the blanket covering his legs. Her eyes were full of heartache and self-blame.

She was wondering if she was the one who caused Bruce to be crippled. If so, she thought that she would have to spend a lifetime to make up for it.

Halle was both surprised and frightened at Hilla’s concern for Bruce.

Halle didn’t understand when it happened. How could Hilla have such deep feelings for Bruce? The two of them didn’t know each other before.

"I’ve recovered well. Don’t worry."

Bruce’s answer was as usual. At first, Hilla still believed it, but now she felt that Bruce had said this to comfort her.

He had woken up for so long but still couldn’t stand up.

Bruce comforted her, causing Hilla to feel even more guilty towards Bruce.

Hilla was a kind girl.

"Let me introduce you. This is my sister, Halle. You two have met before, but you were still unconscious back then."

Halle had lived in the Anderson’s for a few days. Although she had been busy in the divorce, Halle had noticed how Hilla took care of Bruce.

Seeing Hilla taking care of a man, Halle was somewhat unwilling.

However, when she saw Bruce, Halle politely nodded and greeted him.

"Halle, this is Horton, the private doctor of the Andersons, and..."

"Hilla, is my luggage still upstairs? I want to go upstairs and change my clothes."

Halle turned to Hilla and glanced at Margaret, saying, "Miss Anderson, Can you take me up there?"

"Okay."

Margaret pulled Halle happily upstairs.

Hilla couldn’t help but frown. She looked at Horton and said, "Do you and Halle know each other?"

Halle would never be so rude to others, nor would she be as abnormal as she was today. Halle hadn’t even finished speaking when she hurriedly avoided Horton. Hilla felt that something was wrong.

Was there something that she didn’t know about?

But thinking about it carefully, Halle moved to the countryside to open a factory after divorce, so she shouldn’t know Horton.

"She looks a little familiar, or maybe I have seen her somewhere."

Horton frowned as if he was deep in thought. Hilla couldn’t help but look him up and down and rolled her eyes at him.

"You must not have left a good impression on her. Halle does not like you."

Even in the face of the Tysons, Halle had not even reached the point where she could turn around and leave without a word. It could be imagined how annoying this Horton was.

"Really? Why do I feel that her gaze at me is full of love?"

"Stop bragging!"

Because of Halle’s arrival, the Anderson’s became livelier. And even Horton walked more frequently to the Anderson’s as it neared Christmas.

The more people there were, the livelier it became. They picked some roses in full bloom in the rose room. Then, Hilla and Margaret ran out happily.

Halle stood in front of an extremely beautiful azalea, looking at the delicate petals in front of her, and said, "Mr. Anderson is thirty years old, right?"

The warmth in Bruce’s eyes dissipated, and he said, "Yes!"

"You are ten years older than Hilla. Although I know that marriage and feelings can’t be calculated according to time and age, I really feel that you are not suitable for Hilla."

She didn’t want to make a decision on behalf of Hilla, nor did she interfere in Hilla’s marriage.

If Bruce and Hilla were in a normal married, even if they were in a business marriage, she thought that she would not be so worried now.

However, she knew how abnormal this marriage was. The attitude of Hilla towards Bruce made her worried.

Nothing was more terrifying than a woman gradually losing herself.

Bruce sat in the wheelchair. The fragrance of flowers and plants was exceptionally

rich, but Bruce looked cold.

"Did Hilla tell you this?"

Bruce’s voice was calm, but Halle clearly felt a cold and oppressive feeling from him.

She shook her head and said, "She didn’t tell me this. It’s my opinion."

"You should know very well that the Holt family has gone bankrupt. Hilla and I have nothing but each other. Your marriage was actually a scheme against you. It was just that you had no right to choose at that time."

"You are worried that I can choose now and I may abandon Hilla, right?"

Bruce cut Halle to the quick with his words and Halle said, "I admit that Hilla is the reacher."

"No, she isn’t the reacher. It’s just that we’re so right for each other. Also, besides you, the Andersons and I will be her strongest backers."

Bruce’s voice was not loud, and he slowly tapped on the wheelchair’s armrest with his fingers.

There was no trace of a smile on Bruce’s face. Halle was surprised when she heard his words and could not help but look up at him.

"You..."

"My marriage with Hilla was indeed a bit absurd at the beginning, but she was my wife."

"Is it because of responsibility? Hilla is still young. She can experience her love and own happy marriage. Even if she leaves the Andersons now, she can still have a happy life. I can take care of her."

Halle said anxiously. She hoped that it was a rational conversation between her and Bruce.

Bruce chuckled and said, "Of course I believe that you can support Hilla with the property you got from the divorce. But, Hilla is too strong a character. I’m afraid she doesn’t need your care."

"Halle, you can think about it. In River City, other than the Andersons, no one can take care of her better. The Andersons and I will be her strongest backers."

Halle was stunned. She thought, "Really? He said that he would take care of Hilla for the rest of his life!"

...

The shock in Halle’s eyes faded and she could not help but say, "How can I believe your words?"

Bruce was a man with a successful career. Even if he was now sitting in a wheelchair, with his current status and wealth, many women wanted to marry him.

She knew that Hilla also had outstanding qualities, but Halle didn’t expect Hilla to be able to let such a man fall in love with Hilla for the rest of his life.

Back then, even if she had the support of her family, she still had a terrible life in the Tyson’s. Now that she and Hilla had nothing, and might even bring the Andersons trouble, so she was very worried about Hilla.

Could Bruce protect Hilla forever?

Halle bit her lips, the leaf of azaleas in her hand was crushed by her, the juice stained her hand, but she still could not calm down.

For so many years, perhaps the trauma that her marriage had cast on her was too heavy. In her opinion, there was no long-term love, so women could only maintain a marriage with long-term interests.

Hilla didn’t have anything now, but Halle was afraid that Hilla would fall in love with Bruce.

"Your factory is about to open, right? It should take a lot of energy and money."

Halle was feeling guilty and she didn’t know if Bruce said that on purpose. She bit her lips and said, "I see. Hilla gave me some money. I know we can’t hide it from you. Don’t worry, we will return it to you."

"You are mistaken about me. 500 thousand dollars is just Hilla’s pocket money. It’s her business where she wants to spend it. Hilla is my wife, not my maid. She can do what she wants."

Halle didn’t believe his words, but she chuckled, saying, "I’ll keep my words."

Bruce raised his eyebrows and thought, "Halle and Hilla are indeed a family. Both of them take things seriously."

He was too lazy to argue with her, so he only said, "You’re busy taking care of the factory that hasn’t started yet. How do you take care of Hilla and protect her?"

"It’s difficult for a woman to start her career from scratch. I think you must have known it these days. You can’t even take good care of yourself. If one day she encounters something bad like you, can you protect her from harm?"

Bruce knew when enough was enough.

Seeing Halle’s pale face, he knew that the woman in front of him understood everything.

Bruce was right. Halle understood his meaning. She could take care of Hilla in eating

and living. If something happened, she would not be of any help to Hilla. In fact, she might even bring trouble to Hilla!

When she looked at Bruce again, the panic in Halle’s eyes had faded away. Instead, she said seriously, "Do you love Hilla?"

"Since she is my wife, I will always protect her."

Halle chuckled and nodded, saying, "I won’t tell Hilla about our conversation today. Mr. Anderson, please treat Hilla well. She has not suffered much since she was a child. Although she is optimistic, she is a girl of an unbending character. Even if she cries, she will not let others know. She will only hide and be sad. The Holts can’t protect her now. I hope you can."

He had seen Hilla who had secretly hid and cried, and it was indeed more than once.

Hilla was actually very fragile.

"What has happened to Halle and Bruce?"

It was rare that so many people in the East Courtyard who were gathered together to have meals.

Horton also came here from Tyree’s house, but Tyree was old, and the food he ate was different from theirs. Therefore, Tyree didn’t come here.

Hilla and Margaret huddled together, whispering.

Although Margaret was older than Hilla, she was livelier than Hilla.

Margaret said, "You told me that there was something wrong with Halle and Horton before. Now, you say that there is something wrong with Bruce and Halle. Do you think that they..."

Hilla thought, "It’s a waste that you aren’t a screenwriter!"

Hilla couldn’t help but roll her eyes at Margaret and said in a low voice, "What are you talking about? Halle didn’t like Bruce very much two days ago, and Bruce didn’t talk to Halle much either. But they said three sentences just now!"

It was a wonder!

Margaret rolled her eyes and said in a low voice, "It’s normal. Bruce is such a talkative person. Halle must have been convinced by him."

Halle indeed did not want her to stay in the Anderson’s, nor did Halle like Bruce much. But Halle had changed her attitude towards Bruce. What had happened?

"Halle, didn’t you have a stomachache yesterday? Let’s go to see a doctor later."

Hilla turned her head and smiled. But Halle frowned, saying, "I’m fine. I don’t need to go to see a doctor."

Horton immediately leaned over and said, "Are you feeling unwell? I can examine you."

Halle glanced at him and said coldly, "I have gynecological diseases. Are you good at gynecology?"

Hearing this, Horton sat upright.

He was indeed not good at gynecology, but he whispered, "But I can have a try."

He muttered in a low voice and immediately attracted the attention of the three women on the table.

Margaret rolled her eyes at him and said, "Horton, you are too shameless. Halle has gynecological diseases. Why are you so clingy to a single woman?"

Hilla had a feeling of pity for Horton. As a man, he was so humiliated by Margaret, and he was really embarrassed.

She quickly laughed and said, "Halle has a stomachache recently, and she is relatively weak. Horton, although you are a doctor, you are a man. It is not convenient!"

"Why?"

Horton muttered. Fortunately, no one heard him. Otherwise, he would have been ridiculed again.

After lunch, Hilla dragged Halle to the hospital.

Halle’s face was pale along the way, but she said to Hilla, "I’m okay. I will be fine after a few days of rest."

"Halle, you are alone in the factory now. If you are too busy, you will fall ill. When the factory opens, what if you fall ill at that time? Listen to me and go to see a doctor."

Hilla didn’t understand why Halle didn’t want to go to the hospital with her. The more Halle didn’t want to go, the more Hilla felt that there was something wrong with Halle’s body. She thought Halle wanted to hide something from her.

"Hilla, I’m fine."

"I only believe the doctor’s words."

"No need. I’m pregnant!"

Halle’s voice was not loud, but it shocked Hilla. Hilla asked subconsciously, "Who is the child’s father?"
