Mrs Hale, I Surrender

Chapter 517: Michale Shaw’s Extra (8) Recognition, Special Person
He lay in bed, tossing and turning, unable to sleep.
It seemed he understood that Tobias Carter was different from everyone else in his heart.
He had always been a man of action, not stubborn. Once he thought of something and decided, he went for it. Just like when he pursued Hannah Johnson back in the day, it was bold and passionate. Even though he was ultimately rejected, he handled it gracefully; otherwise, he wouldn’t have become friends with William Hale.
Maybe there is always that one person.
Not related to gender or age, just someone who can make your heart race.
Being with that person makes you inexplicably happy.
Being apart makes you feel lost.
Even just hearing their voice makes your heart leap.
He hadn’t even experienced this feeling with Hannah.
So, well past ten o’clock, he called William Hale.
“Hale, something’s happened!”
“What’s the matter?”
“I’m finished, Grandpa is a very traditional man, he’s definitely going to break my legs.”
William chuckled, “What? Did you knock some girl up?”
“Not that.”
“Got married in secret?”
“No, I didn’t.”
“Then what are you afraid of?”
“I think… I’ve fallen for someone.”
…
The next day, he met up with William Hale, “After thinking it over for the night, are you sure of your feelings? Have you really thought it through and it’s not just a whim?”
“Absolutely not a whim,” Michale Shaw assured. “Aren’t you curious about who I have feelings for?”
William said nothing, just pinched the bridge of his nose, he could guess.
Because a few days ago, Old Shaw had visited his house, had tea and reminisced with his own grandfather, seeing Vera and Kaia Hale, sighing that Michale had been single for many years and still had no girlfriend.
Back then, Grandpa even asked, “What has Michale been busy with lately?”
Old Shaw only said, “Lately, he’s been hanging out with the Carter boy.”
William was no fool, he could certainly guess.
It seemed from the start Michale was particularly attentive to this Carter. And last time at the police station, William sensed that this was likely the person involved in Michale’s drunken incident… from four or five years ago.
Maybe,
Whether drunk or sober, his aesthetic tastes hadn’t changed.
Even the person he set his eyes on,
was the same one!
How could that not be a kind of fate?
“Hale, do you look down on me?” Michale Shaw frowned.
William shook his head, “I’m just afraid Grandpa Shaw won’t be able to accept it.”
After all, in Michale’s generation, he’s the sole heir.
The family’s hopes are all pinned on him.
“Grandpa, indeed, needs to be handled carefully.”
If he truly wanted to pursue someone, his mind had to be focused and free of worries.
William thought he would take a more indirect approach,
but that night he received a call from Michale’s mother, “William, come to our house immediately. The old man likes you the most, come and try to talk to him.”
“Auntie, what’s going on?”
“Michale hasn’t been home for days, suddenly came back today, and talked to the old man in the study. We don’t know what they discussed, but the old man picked up a stick from the yard and said he’s going to beat him to death!” Mrs. Shaw’s voice was trembling with anxiety.
“The old man usually dotes on him, but I don’t know what happened, if this goes on, something terrible will happen!”
“He said Michale disgraced the family, I don’t know what to do, please come and try to talk to him.”
…
William immediately had a headache.
His so-called good idea was to come clean directly.
This kid must be crazy!
William hesitated, then headed straight for the Shaw residence, holding his daughter. Old Shaw was already threatening to send him to a sanatorium to see a psychologist, still holding the stick in his hand, “If you don’t want to date or get married, just say so, don’t use such excuses, are you trying to infuriate me?”
“Grandpa, I’m serious, not making excuses!”
“How did our Shaw family produce such a fool as you?”
When Grandpa Shaw raised his stick to hit him, the maid reported that William Hale had brought the little Hale girl. The old man finally dropped the stick.
“Grandfather—” The little girl called sweetly, and Grandpa Shaw’s expression softened instantly.
“Vera, what brings you here?” Grandpa Shaw smiled, his change of expression faster than flipping a book’s pages.
Vera was good at reading people, “Because I missed you, so I asked Daddy to bring me to see you.”
Her little voice was syrupy, melting hearts, and Grandpa Shaw’s frustrations turned to a quiver in his heart, still trembling, while Vera noticed his shaking fingers, clasped his hand, “Grandpa, are you cold? Let me warm you up.”
“What a good girl.”
Old Shaw glanced at his half-beaten grandson, both anxious and pained.
“Did Uncle upset you? Don’t be mad,” Vera said, reaching out to hug the old man, “a hug will make it better.”
The little girl was soft and sweet, even patting his back. Whatever rage he had simmered down, but he still looked at his grandson, angry and distressed.
He knew this sudden visit from William must have been prompted by family, their reinforcement.
By this time, Michale had been helped up, his back beaten badly, causing his mother and elder to feel deeply for him. When asked the reason, neither said a word.
“For now, you stay home, do nothing, and talk to me only after you clear your head!” Old Shaw ordered his grandson.
“Grandpa, I’ve already made up my mind.”
“Does that person like you?”
“I don’t know.”
“You…”
Old Shaw felt dizzy. It turned out his grandson was engrossed without even knowing if the feelings were mutual, and yet he came to confess, completely without sense!
The rest of the Shaw family felt perplexed hearing all this. Wasn’t it a good thing Michale had someone he liked? Their family, after all, had never resorted to children’s marriages for business expansion.
Raising a child wasn’t easy, they were cherished above all, never to be forced into a loveless marriage.
Even if wealthy, one can only eat three meals a day.
The Shaw family had long set up trust funds ensuring that future generations would be financially secure even in the event of bankruptcy.
So if Michale had found someone he liked, was that not a good thing?
Nobody could understand why the old man was so furious.
But Michale was determined, prompting the old man to retort, “From tomorrow, you will see a psychologist!”
“Grandpa, I’m not sick!”
William gave Michale a look, signaling him to stop provoking the old man.
Old Shaw thought it was just a whim of his, but several psychologists concluded:
He wasn’t sick,
just in love!
The old man took a deep breath, “In love? Why not just drown in it.”
Old Shaw had a traditional, conservative demeanor, and couldn’t accept what was happening. But seeing Michale’s back bruised purple and blue, recently not eating, and noticeably thinner was heartbreaking for him.
During this time, he himself also saw a psychologist.
He learned some occurrences in life are uncontrollable, including liking someone. Blocking this would make things worse.
He had to accept that everyone is unique and the most special in their own right.
The old man even asked Assistant Merritt about it, who truthfully recounted Michale’s recent situation, leaving the old man pensive.
Perhaps Michale had fought within himself,
but ultimately accepted it.
The old man, grieved for his grandson, finally gave in, only for his grandson to present another challenge: “Grandpa, you are the ultimate authority at home and a master in the business world, my forever aspiration.”
Old Shaw frowned, “Stop flattering, get to the point.”
“Convince Grandma and my parents yourself.”
“…”
The old man was so infuriated he wanted to break his legs.
Michale, feeling no more pain in his back, gleefully rushed to Tobias Carter’s place, free of worries and ready to charge!
But he didn’t expect to walk into another storm!
