Multiversal Wanderer: Starting in Naruto
Chapter 118: Danzo’s Ambush
CHAPTER 118: CHAPTER 118: DANZO’S AMBUSH
Uchiha Fugaku and Shisui watched silently as the Raikage brothers walked away. The tension that had gripped their hearts slowly loosened, and they exhaled in relief.
To be honest, facing the Raikage, his brother, and Killer Bee—the Jinchuriki of the Eight-Tails—had been suffocating. The pressure on them was immense. But behind them stood the pride of the Uchiha Clan, and neither Fugaku nor Shisui could afford to take a single step back.
When the rest of the Uchiha clan arrived to support them, Fugaku’s lips curled into a rare, satisfied smile.
"This time, we’ve won a great victory..."
But just as the words left his mouth—
"Enemy attack!" someone shouted.
A hail of shuriken rained down like a storm. Fugaku instinctively summoned his Susanoo, its ribcage forming in an instant to block the initial wave.
From the shadows, a voice full of venom rang out:
"You damn Uchiha. This is where your treacherous clan meets its end!"
The leader stepped forward—none other than Shimura Danzo.
"Tch. Of course it’s you, old dog." Fugaku sneered, not the least bit surprised. "I should’ve known only a snake like you would ambush us when we’re worn down."
He was right. Danzo had waited for Fugaku and Shisui to exhaust themselves in battle before striking, hoping to clean up the scraps.
"Keep yapping," Danzo said coldly. "It won’t change your fate. Today marks your death anniversary. As for the other Uchiha back in the village... I’ll deal with them, one by one."
He didn’t even try to hide his hatred.
His gaze shifted, locking on Shisui. "Uchiha Shisui? You’re still alive? Where’s that Will of Fire you used to preach about? I thought Hanzo killed you. Seems I was mistaken."
"Danzo, you’ve long since lost the right to talk about the Will of Fire," Shisui replied, eyes burning with fury. "I’ll take back what’s mine. Someone like you doesn’t deserve an Uchiha’s eyes."
Shisui’s voice trembled slightly—not with fear, but regret.
"Itachi," he turned slightly, "this is the real face of the village. There are hundreds—maybe thousands—of Konoha shinobi who died by Danzo’s hands. Remember this: the village isn’t the beautiful place you think it is."
Behind him, Uchiha Itachi clenched his fists. His heart sank as he saw Root agents encircling them.
So this was the truth behind the Will of Fire? A group of assassins in the shadows?
"Shut your mouth!" Danzo growled. "I am an elder of Konoha. Everything I do is for the good of the village. You Uchiha are traitors! You act in secrecy, harbor resentment, and scheme behind the village’s back. Don’t think I don’t know what you’re planning!"
"Execute them! Now!"
"Go, A!" one of the Root commanders shouted.
Aburame Tone stepped forward, both hands outstretched. From beneath her sleeves, a torrent of venomous insects surged toward the Uchiha.
"Fire Style: Great Dragon Fire Technique!"
"Fire Style: Great Fireball Technique!"
"Fire Style: Phoenix Fire Technique!"
The Uchiha responded immediately with a barrage of fire techniques, turning the battlefield into a furnace. The swarm of insects evaporated mid-air.
But the enemy had come prepared.
"Water Style: Waterfall Technique!" shouted a Root shinobi named Jia, countering with a powerful deluge.
Meanwhile, Danzo himself leapt into battle, wind chakra coating his shuriken as he engaged Fugaku head-on. Fugaku grimaced—he had already used too much chakra in the fight against the Eight-Tails. Danzo had timed this perfectly.
"The Art of Spirit Summoning!"
The Uchiha summoned three powerful beasts to their side once more.
Danzo was not impressed. He slapped his palm down.
"Summoning Jutsu: Dream Tapir!"
The Dream Tapir, a wind-based summon, roared to life and charged at the Uchiha beasts, its breath a vacuum that tore into the earth.
"Wind Style: Vacuum Wave!"
"Wind Style: Vacuum Bullet!"
"Wind Style: Vacuum Blast Barrage!"
Danzo launched technique after technique, his wind-style attacks ruthless and precise.
"Humph, where did you even get these summons?" Danzo sneered. "Typical Uchiha—always hoarding power, refusing to contribute to the village. It’s laughable."
Fugaku glared at him. "It’s a shame people like you have no lineage, no legacy, and no dignity. You steal from others and call it contribution. You really think stealing Shisui’s eye will make you powerful? Face it—you haven’t even synced with it."
That struck a nerve.
Fugaku had unknowingly jabbed at Danzo’s deepest insecurity. Why did Danzo hate the Uchiha so obsessively?
Part of it was indoctrination from Tobirama, his former teacher. But even more so, it was jealousy.
Danzo hated Uchiha Kagami with a passion. Kagami, despite being the youngest, was praised as one of the most talented of his time. He had even saved the Second Hokage’s life. Danzo could never accept that.
Why were others born with greatness, while he had to claw for every scrap—and still come up short?
Even with the transplanted Mangekyō and Hashirama’s cells, Danzo’s power was unstable. The Sharingan wasn’t something just anyone could wield.
"When you die, your eyes will belong to me!" Danzo snarled and attacked once more.
Suddenly, from the rear—
"Success!" shouted Yamanaka Kaze. Hidden among the Root operatives, he had successfully transferred his consciousness into one of the summoned beasts, causing it to thrash and disrupt the others.
With their summons thrown into chaos and the Dream Tapir on a rampage, the Uchiha formation began to falter.
"Fugaku, do you see it now?" Danzo mocked. "It’s only a matter of time. Struggle all you want—it’s useless."
"Susanoo!"
Fugaku summoned it again, but the form collapsed almost immediately. His eyes throbbed in agony—he had pushed his Mangekyō too far today.
Shisui wasn’t doing much better. He was exhausted as well.
"Chief!" Shisui shouted suddenly. "Something’s wrong with Danzo—I tried casting an illusion on him just now, and he wasn’t affected!"
As he spoke, Danzo was struck through the chest by Fugaku’s blade—and died. Or so it seemed.
But his body vanished into thin air.
"No—it’s Izanagi! Everyone, be on guard!"
Danzo’s form reappeared in front of Shisui, his fingers just inches from the Uchiha’s remaining eye.
"Got it!"
Shisui was caught off guard, unable to react in time—
"AHHH!"
A scream pierced the battlefield.
Danzo’s body was suddenly impaled by a giant chakra blade—a construct of Susanoo.
Blood gushed as the eye he had taken exploded. The Mangekyō burst, unable to withstand the damage.
Danzo’s body flickered again, vanishing and reappearing in the distance. Though seemingly unharmed, the stolen Mangekyō was no longer with him.
A voice echoed across the battlefield:
"Long time no see, Danzo. Never thought we’d meet as enemies."
The chakra blade dissolved, but the pressure in the air remained.
It was a fully formed Susanoo—its arm holding the blade like an executioner.
Danzo’s eyes widened.
"...You?!"
--------------------
"It’s you!"
Danzo’s face twisted in shock. Standing before him was none other than Uchiha Kagami, a man he believed to be long dead. But now, Kagami was alive, whole, and very real.
If it were just a reincarnation, Danzo might’ve been able to accept it. But this wasn’t some Edo Tensei puppet—it was the living, breathing Kagami. Back then, Kagami had been gravely injured, so badly even Tsunade couldn’t heal him. Danzo had never once doubted that Kagami had died. And yet, here he stood.
As if fate enjoyed mocking him, Danzo’s once-dead best friend had returned... and he held in his hand the Mangekyō Sharingan—the very eye Danzo had stolen from Shisui.
"Long time no see, Danzo," Kagami said calmly, handing the eye back to Shisui. "This eye was never yours to begin with. Don’t force what doesn’t belong to you."
He turned to Shisui.
"And you... you finally see the truth, don’t you? Konoha isn’t the pure, noble place you thought it was. Of course, it’s still the village of the Uchiha and the Senju. But the ideals? They’ve long rotted."
Shisui accepted the eye, silent, his expression conflicted.
"Senior Kagami!"
Uchiha Fugaku stepped forward and bowed. There was no doubt—Kagami had sided with the Uchiha.
"You... you died. I saw it with my own eyes! You—how... how is this possible?!" Danzo’s voice cracked, his world unraveling.
"You’re so certain, aren’t you?" Kagami said quietly, eyes cold. "That just confirms my suspicions. It was you... You arranged the attack on me back then, didn’t you?"
"You—!"
"Save it. I don’t expect you to confess. I’m not here to argue or dig up evidence. Your guilt is enough for me. A long time ago, Ancestor Xiu Yu told me—don’t place too much faith in the village. Everything, at its core, is a struggle for power and self-interest. I didn’t understand back then. Now I do."
Kagami’s gaze darkened.
"So, Danzo... any last words? I was your friend once. I’ll give you that much."
Danzo gritted his teeth.
"You think I’ve been sitting still all these years? You’re underestimating me! Dream Tapir!"
The massive creature roared into existence, unleashing a brutal Wind Release that tore through the area. Sand billowed, trees cracked and fell under the pressure.
But Kagami barely moved.
"You’re still weak, Danzo."
A massive chakra arm slammed down from above, crushing the tapir with overwhelming force. The beast didn’t even get a chance to scream.
Danzo’s eyes widened.
"Susanoo...!"
The sight reignited the fire of jealousy deep in his heart.
"I won’t accept this!" Danzo roared. "You’re only strong because you’re an Uchiha! If I were born into a powerful clan like you, how would you be any better than me?! Everything you have—it’s just bloodline privilege!"
"You and Sarutobi... Always the geniuses. You never once looked back at me! Why did the Third choose that brat Minato as his successor and not me?! I’m the one who deserved to be Hokage!"
Kagami’s face remained unreadable.
"Admit it. You were never on Sarutobi’s level. When Tobirama-sensei volunteered to be the rearguard, it was Sarutobi who stepped forward without hesitation. What did you do, Danzo? You didn’t even move."
"I—It was just a few seconds!" Danzo shouted. "He was just faster!"
"No. You were scared. I was scared too, but I still acted. You lacked the courage, the will. Tobirama saw it—and that’s why he chose Sarutobi."
Danzo was shaking now, veins bulging in rage.
"SHUT UP! I won’t listen to this!"
Kagami didn’t flinch.
"You’re still lying to yourself. That’s why you’ve remained the same—cowardly and bitter."
He moved. In an instant, Susanoo’s hand clenched.
Danzo was crushed—
—but reappeared behind him.
Kagami didn’t even turn around.
"Izanagi, huh? That won’t save you. No matter how you twist reality, you can’t avoid your end."
"You’re just clinging to those damn eyes! What else do you have?! You can’t even kill me!" Danzo shouted, kunai in hand, desperation written all over him.
He was thinking only of escape now. If he could make it back to the village, Hiruzen would protect him.
"I know what you are—a pathetic provocateur. But fine. Let me show you how small your world really is."
Kagami raised his hand.
"Earth Style – Earth Flow Rampart!"
The ground erupted.
"Earth Style – Earth Release: Mountain Jutsu!"
A colossal dome of rock descended, engulfing the area. Danzo tried to use the Substitution Technique, but the sheer scale of the attack made escape impossible.
Moments later, Danzo reappeared a short distance away, panting heavily. His chakra was nearly drained. Izanagi’s price was steep—once the Sharingan on his arm were spent, there was no coming back.
"You don’t even have to use your eyes to beat me, do you?" Kagami said coldly. "Admit it, Danzo. You’re not strong enough to fight alone. You crave the title of Hokage, yet you never earned it. You never trained. You are a Rookie. You never grew. All you are is a bitter little man clinging to power you don’t understand."
Kagami shook his head in disappointment.
"Clan Leader, what does ’rookie’ mean?" Shisui asked quietly.
"’Rookie’ is slang for ’incompetent,’" Fugaku replied. "It’s something Xiu Yu used to say. Not surprising if you’ve never heard it before."
Neither of them moved to help. Kagami didn’t need it. This wasn’t a fight—it was an execution.
The rest of Root had already been dealt with. Danzo stood alone, desperate.
He lunged forward again, slashing with a kunai. Susanoo’s shield appeared instantly, snapping the blade like a twig.
"You’ve regressed, Danzo. Your power’s deteriorated. Even the Hashirama cells in your body are turning against you."
Kagami pointed to Danzo’s twisted, swollen arm.
"Wood Release – Exploding Tree Cannon!"
Danzo’s right arm exploded into a massive wooden branch, lashing toward Kagami. Sharp tendrils shot out like spears.
But Kagami didn’t flinch.
"Don’t insult Wood Release. That’s not Wood Release—it’s a cheap knockoff. If the First and Second Hokage saw what you’ve done, they’d be ashamed."
"I didn’t lose to you..." Danzo wheezed, blood spilling from his lips. "I lost to the Uchiha. The Second Hokage was right... You’re born evil."
He dropped to his knees, the last of his Sharingan spent. He had planned to implant ten of them—but he never got the chance.
What he thought would be his trap had turned into his grave.
