CHAPTER 53: 053: ON THE WAY TO THE HOSPITAL
"I’ll leave the rest to you, I’m heading out." After Jiang Baizhou hung up the phone with Cen Jin, he set aside his work and descended from the second floor, glancing at Lu Xize who was comparing design plans, and casually tossing out this sentence as he walked past him.
Lu Xize, quick on the uptake, grabbed him: "Hey, why are you leaving? You were the one who said to make adjustments, and you haven’t finished yet—are you just going to leave with a clear conscience?"
"Something came up, the plans are finalized, you can choose to continue with them tomorrow." Jiang Baizhou glanced back at him, withdrawing his arm from Lu Xize’s grasp, and slipped his hands into his pants pockets.
"Something came up? What kind of thing?" Lu Xize squinted, casting a doubtful sideways glance at him, crossing his arms and snorting lightly: "Hmph, what do you have going on other than the clinic stuff? Just this noon, I don’t know who refused to eat just to confirm those renovation materials..."
"Picking up Cen Jin." Perhaps not wanting to hear his nagging anymore, Jiang Baizhou bluntly interrupted him.
Lu Xize listened to his plain and indifferent four-syllable reply, and couldn’t tell if he was hearing things—somehow he detected a trace of arrogance and contempt, causing his lips to twitch slightly: "Is the clinic more important, or is Nie Cenjin more important?"
"Nie Cenjin."
"Am I more important, or is Nie Cenjin more important?"
Jiang Baizhou didn’t reply immediately but rather shot him a dismissive look and playfully said: "No comparison."
"What do you mean?"
"Literal meaning." Jiang Baizhou glanced at the time on his wrist, no longer willing to linger with him, he turned and headed for the door: "I’m leaving."
"Jiang Baizhou, you’re prioritizing romance over friendship!" Lu Xize shouted at his retreating back with dissatisfaction, but unfortunately, Jiang Baizhou had no intention of responding.
After getting in the car, Jiang Baizhou opened the location that Cen Jin had sent him and drove along the route. However, before the car had exited Chunxi Road, Cen Jin called, and Jiang Baizhou casually swiped the screen to answer on speaker: "I’m on my way."
"Well..." On the other end of the phone, Cen Jin sounded a bit embarrassed, coughing lightly twice: "I’m not there anymore."
Upon hearing this, Jiang Baizhou slightly furrowed his brows, noticing the traffic light turning red, stopping his car, and asked: "Not there anymore? What do you mean?"
"I’m on the way to the hospital." Cen Jin sighed silently, watching the medical staff on either side of her tending to the scrapes on her leg, replying weakly.
After hanging up the phone with Jiang Baizhou, she was knocked down by an electric scooter. It was quite a mishap since she was wearing high heels and twisted her ankle when she fell, and got scrapes on her shin. The lady who was riding the scooter felt sorry and helped call an ambulance, even trying to give her 500 yuan as compensation, but Cen Jin refused, knowing she also had part of the responsibility. Originally, she felt the ambulance was unnecessary, but since her shin was bleeding and her ankle was sprained, she was taken to the ambulance.
"To the hospital? What’s going on?" Upon hearing the sensitive word ’hospital,’ Jiang Baizhou’s lazy demeanor instantly turned severe, his tone sharper.
"Uh, got hit by a vehicle, but..."
"Hit by a vehicle? Nie Cenjin, didn’t I tell you to wait for me there? Is it serious? Which hospital? I’m coming now."
His sudden anger left Cen Jin a bit dazed, apprehensively scratched her nose, and checked the emblem on the nurse’s uniform beside her: "If it were serious, would I still be talking to you? It was an electric scooter, Xinghai Hospital."
