CHAPTER 38: INDUCTION FINALE: A COLLECTION OF TECHNIQUES

And so it began, the various displays of magic.

The mages without a guild started approaching the doll one by one after being called forth by Thamoryn.

Each one would unleash a magic attack on the doll in a bid to damage it as much as they could.

And each time someone attacked the doll, a screen would pop up right before Aiden.

It kept going on, one after the other. One unfortunate thing, however, was how low their ranks were.

Most of the technique strengths were at E and D ranks, with only a few being at C rank. Nevertheless, it didn’t make Aiden any less excited.

When these mages were done displaying their magic, interested captains would raise their hands, and the mages would point to their choice.

They would then go and stand in line behind the captains.

There was one captain, however, who wasn’t indicating any interest; the one captain most people suddenly would have wanted to show interest. That was Katherine, Captain of the Ravens Grave.

She simply watched with a smile on her face, and it remained this way until the entire magic display process was done.

As soon as this was completed, Thamoryn addressed everyone. "That brings us to the end of guild selections. You may now access your Guild wings and the General Wing as you see fit."

This was good development, especially for Aiden. At least he knew it had a much better library than the limited one in the Academy wing.

But the General Wing was much more than just a larger library. It had a Training Hall, a Research Room, an Exam Hall, and an Infirmary.

It was also the wing where different mages from different guilds could interact with each other.

"I expect the captains to have your guild uniforms given to you by tomorrow morning. That way you all would be properly suited for your first missions," Thamoryn said with a smile on her face.

She added, "At the end of the assigned missions, Performance Points would be awarded to the students. I’ll have you all know that your performance in your first mission will count toward your endeavors in achieving the rank of Initiate. For right now, you are all still probationary members of the guild."

The mages definitely did not see that coming. Some got nervous instantly. Some were excited.

"The Academy wing still remains your quarters until you are a guild’s Initiate. In the meantime, captains, please have a word with your new mages. Mission details will be sent out by morning. Thank you all."

As soon as the Grand Magus was done, she turned away and continued toward the Academy building.

The Guild Masters then stood up and scattered in different directions while gesturing to their new intakes to come along for an address.

Except for Cassian, who walked toward Katherine. Katherine noticed his approaching presence and asked the four of them to go ahead and wait.

"The almighty Cassian seeks out my audience today," Katherine began, with an almost taunting expression.

Cassian had a brief smile on his face and replied, "You selected no more mages after those four. Why?"

"I got all three of the best potential mages and the Daughter Heir of House Greystone. So pardon me if I felt pity for you lot and decided to stay out of the rest of the selection," Katherine said almost mockingly.

"Heh." Cassian gave no further reaction and simply returned to the new mages waiting on him, but you could tell he was furious.

It was the first time Fractured Stars weren’t getting the best of the mages, and he felt suspicious of special involvement from Katherine to cause this turn of events.

Katherine shook her head amusingly, then turned back toward the corner where her new intakes waited.

She looked at the four of them with rather calculating eyes, then chuckled softly and said, "I can obviously tell this wasn’t just a coincidence, but I can’t say I hate this outcome."

Arianna had the biggest grin on her face, especially knowing that this was exactly as she had planned it.

"Well, there isn’t much to say except make yourselves available at the guild’s wing tomorrow morning."

"Yes, Captain," Arianna said, and the others repeated after her.

Katherine took a look at Aiden and Kayden and said, "We should have the right sizes that fit you both."

Then she turned toward the girls and squinted her eyes slightly as she examined the upper part of both their bodies.

Then she said with a contemplative expression, "Hmm... Greystone, you pack nicely, so even my old uniforms would fit. For you, elf lady, not so much, but I’m sure we can work something out. That would be all, see you tomorrow."

Laela turned her face away in embarrassment, and Arianna whispered closely to her, "Don’t worry, dear, they’ll grow."

Both Kayden and Aiden looked in different directions, attempting to act as if they hadn’t heard that body-shaming comment from their guild’s captain.

Arianna then walked up in front of them and said, "Thank you all for honoring our agreements."

They nodded toward her in acknowledgment, then she turned and made her way back toward the Dorms.

Kayden chased after her and called out, "Wait up, Arianna." He caught up, and they both made their way toward the Academy building.

This left just Aiden and Laela in a brief moment of awkward silence.

Aiden broke it and said in a light voice, "When I saw you at Rivendale, I didn’t take you for a mage."

She smiled and said, "You are not wrong. I wasn’t much of one either."

Then there was awkward silence again from both of them, as they both looked around in different directions.

Two people who wanted to talk to each other but couldn’t find the right words or know how exactly to proceed with a conversation.

Laela was an extremely shy elf, and Aiden had no experience with getting to know women.

Laela broke the moment of silence and said, "Maybe I should get back inside. It seems tomorrow’s a big day."

"Oh yes, yes, by all means," Aiden replied immediately.

She nodded slightly and turned back toward the Academy building.

"Aiden, you’re terrible at this," he said to himself, then spoke to his system. "System, is there a chance you would give me a skill that helps with talking to girls?"

[Not likely] the system replied.

Aiden sighed, then a grin appeared on his face as he said again to the system, "How many techniques were copied tonight?"

[37 additional magic techniques were added to your Technique Copy skill]

"Good. Let’s start reviewing," Aiden said as he slowly made his way back to the dorms.
