CHAPTER 40: FAKE LOVE?

"I WILL pay for the renovation of the APA Headquarters with my personal money," Soobin said, leaning against the seat while crossing his arms over his chest. "In return, I want APA to acknowledge Hee-ya and Hwang Frost’s contract."

It was annoying, but they needed APA’s approval.

Especially since Soobin was planning to revive both Wonhee and Hwang Frost’s tarnished images to the public.

[The public trusts APA, so we must gain their approval first.]

Hence, Soobin asked Hwang Frost to step outside in the meantime.

Geon, on the other hand, had to leave because Wonhee called them earlier asking for help.

Since Soobin was busy, he let his husband in charge of his baby sister’s welfare in the meantime.

"I don’t want my baby sister to guide Hwang Frost either, but what can we do? The System chose Hee-ya as his Guide," Soobin said, frowning. "We have to follow what the System wants."

"You’re just saying that because you want us to do your bidding, Yeon Soobin."

"I’m not as greedy as APA is, Kwon Jiwoong. I care about my baby sister, but I also care about our country," Soobin said, tapping his fingers on the table. "Think about it, Kwon Jiwoong. This is the first time an S-Class Guide has awakened. Once we introduced Hee-ya as the first recorded S-Class Guide, then Korea will surely grab the entire world’s attention."

It was as if Kwon Jiwoong’s ears perked up.

[Just a little bit push...]

"The other countries have always looked down on Korea because our nation is small," Soobin continued. "And, despite having the Big 4 right after the Outbreak, Korea is still recorded to have the smallest numbers of Hunters who got upgraded to S-Class Hunters for the past few years. In short, the level of the majority of the Awakened People in our country has become stagnant while the Awakened People all over the world continue to grow at an alarming rate."

Kwon Jiwoong suddenly turned serious. "You’re right," he said while nodding. "The powerhouse countries only acknowledge you and the Big 4 when Korea is mentioned. Overall, they look down on our country. But I can’t blame them because, like you said, our Hunters are slow when it comes to leveling up. That’s why we celebrate Hunters like Lee Seodam who levels up quickly."

Right.

Soobin wanted to roll his eyes at the mention of Wonhee’s ex-boyfriend, but he refrained from doing so since he knew Kwon Jiwoong was fond of Lee Seodam.

And it was obvious why.

[As far as I know, Lee Seodam awakened as a B-Class Hunter, then he recently leveled up and became an A-Class Hunter. Kwon Jiwoong and the rest of APA are expecting that boy to level up again and become an S-Class Hunter soon... wait.]

Soobin suddenly realized that Lee Seodam awakened after dating Wonhee for a year, and he leveled up while the two were still together.

Could it be...?

[Did Lee Seodam level up that quickly because of Hee-ya?]

Ah, that couldn’t be it.

Soobin put that thought at the back of his mind.

"But we have an S-Class Guide now," Kwon Jiwoong said, flashing his capitalist smile. "Once the world pays attention to Korea again, then doors that have been shut down before might open this time."

It was obvious that Kwon Jiwoong was thinking of how to exploit Wonhee.

But Soobin pretended not to know.

After all, it was his baby sister who had the upper hand in this anyway.

[And I can take advantage of Kwon Jiwoong’s greed.]

"We will showcase Hee-ya’s high-class ability as an S-Class Guide to the world by letting her guide Hwang Frost back to sanity," Soobin said, raising an eyebrow. "But, first, we need to clear Hee-ya’s name to the public."

"SOOBIN-AH, Cheongsan just called and informed us that Hee-ya and her friends have safely arrived in our penthouse," Geon, his husband who was standing while brewing coffee, reported as soon as Soobin entered Geon’s private room hidden in his office. "Hwang Frost is in the other room while checking the activities his team has been doing since he got locked up."

"I see," Soobin said, then he hugged Geon from behind and put his chin on his husband’s shoulder. "What happened? Why did Hee-ya need us to bail her friend?"

"Gong Yool shot Song Sunho."

"Who shot who?"

"Gong Yool shot Song Sunho."

"The Song Sunho that I know?" Soobin asked in disbelief. "Song Sunho, the Vice Guild Master of the Autumn Guild? Song Moonho’s younger brother? That lunatic who’s obsessed with Ahn Kisoo?"

"Yes, that Song Sunho," Geon confirmed while nodding. "Cheongsan bribed the police using the new weapons that you made and bailed Gong Yool without a problem. But Song Sunho is still unconscious in the hospital, so the Autumn Guild will definitely demand that we hand over Gong Yool to them later."

"I’m surprised they haven’t done that yet."

"Well, Song Moonho hasn’t come out of the dungeon yet," Geon said. "But I assume the Autumn Guild will move as soon as Song Moonho has returned. Although Song Moonho doesn’t show it, he genuinely cares about Song Sunho."

"It will be hard to convince Hee-ya, but we’ll have no choice but to surrender Gong Yool to the Autumn Guild later," Soobin said carefully. "Song Moonho isn’t exactly an easy enemy."

"Right. But I have a feeling that it won’t happen."

"Why?"

"Ahn Kisoo just called me."

"Why would he call you?"

"He filed a complaint against Song Sunho," Geon explained, then he turned around to face him. "Ahn Kisoo just accused Song Sunho of sexual harassment. Since I’m the director in charge of the Guides’ welfare, including their safety from Hunter-predators, he called to ask for my help."

Soobin wasn’t surprised.

It was an open secret in the industry that Song Sunho had been sexually harassing Ahn Kisoo ever since Ahn Kisoo awakened as a Guide.

Fortunately, Graham took Ahn Kisoo to be the Summer Guild’s exclusive Guide.

"I’m glad that Ahn Kisoo finally had the courage to report Song Sunho," Soobin said. "It’s hard to help someone who doesn’t want to be helped."

"I know, and that’s why I’ll make sure Song Sunho ends up with a heavy punishment," Geon said sternly. "Guides suffered a lot at the beginning of the Outbreak. I won’t let those Hunter-predators mistreat Guides again."

Soobin understood where Geon was coming from.

It was a really dark time for Guides when laws protecting them hadn’t been established yet. In the beginning, Hunters treated Guides as mere tools to "recharge." And when Hunters discovered that they could get more energy from Guides through sexual intercourse...

Haaah.

[I don’t even want to think about it.]

"Thank you for working hard, Geon-ah," Soobin said sincerely. "If it wasn’t for your hard work, this country wouldn’t be safe for Guides like Hee-ya."

"I’m just doing my job," Geon said, shrugging. "Anyway, what should we do about Hee-ya and Hwang Frost’s living arrangements? Hee-ya is like a daughter to me. Even if it’s the System’s order, I refuse to let her sleep on the same bed as Hwang Frost without any sort of assurance that that bastard won’t touch her inappropriately."

Aww.

Soobin was, of course, happy that his husband cared about Wonhee as much as he cared about his baby sister.

But, to be honest, he was questioning why Wonhee seemed to be carefree these days.

[It’s strange since my baby sister is the careful type.]

"Hee-ya isn’t the type to open up to strangers right away," Soobin said, knitting his eyebrows. "I wonder why Hee-ya let Hwang Frost stick to her like glue."

***

"ARE YOU done being lovey-dovey with your husband, Hyung?" Yejun asked when Yeon Soobin finally came to pick him up. "My energy is getting low. I need to see Wonhee."

Yeon Soobin looked at him, and then he sighed. "Hwang Frost, you haven’t told me about the new skill that you gained yet."

Ah, so it was about that.

"It seems like you already know what skill I gained, Hyung," Yejun said, raising an eyebrow at Yeon Soobin. "Isn’t it because it’s the same skill that you gained after you "decided" to love and protect Chu Wonhee?"

"Hwang Frost–"

"Semi Noona, too," Yejun said, interrupting Yeon Soobin. "You both realized that the System cares about Chu Wonhee a lot. So, you shower your "baby" sister with love and affection. Because the more you do, the more the System favors you."

Yeon Soobin didn’t confirm it, but he also didn’t deny it.

[Then I’m right.]

"How about you, Hwang Frost?" Yeon Soobin asked coldly. "Are you only being "gentle" and clingy to Chu Wonhee because of the benefits you gain from cherishing her?"

Pfft.

Yejun, even without looking at his reflection, knew that his eyes glowed when he grinned. "Well, what kind of Hunter would turn down getting new skills by simply being nice to their Guide?"

***

"I HAVE a confession. I’m actually keeping this a secret from Yejun and my family," Wonhee said, taking a deep breath while looking back and forth between Yool and Ahyeon. "But the System gave me a "side quest"– and that side quest requires me to gain Yejun’s affection, so I’m being super nice to him."

She felt bad because she felt like she was being a fake towards Hwang Yejun.

The guilt in her chest was actually starting to feel heavy.

So, when the topic regarding her skills as an S-Class Guide was brought up while she was talking to her friends about her mission to save Graham, she decided to confess to Yool and Ahyeon because she knew she could trust them with her secret.

"I-It’s okay, Wony Noona!" Ahyeon cheered for her right away. "To be honest, you’re a nice person anyway so I’m sure you’re not being 100% fake..."

"I told you before, didn’t I?" Yool said, nodding approvingly while giving her a thumbs up. "Wony-ah, being a villainess is your true calling."

Pfft.

Wonhee wanted to refute what Yool said, but she stopped when her phone rang.

It rang again and again.

She received calls from different people, but those people came from the same family.

"Seodam Oppa’s mother and sister are calling me," Wonhee said, smiling bitterly. "Should I really just become a villainess?"

***

sola_cola’s thoughts on this Chapter: Oh, god. So both Yejun and Wonhee have hidden agendas for ~loving~ each other for now, huh? I wonder who’s gonna fall for real first? ;
