CHAPTER 386: CHAPTER 386: ROWAN ALDER’S PLOT

Shawn let out a self-deprecating laugh and said, "It’s my birthday at the end of the month, this Saturday. Accompany me through my birthday, and then we’ll get divorced."

After saying that, he turned off the lights again.

Susan Wilde looked at the pitch-dark room, watching him behave so abnormally and strangely.

She thought, whether or not what he said about liking her was true, they were destined to part ways anyway.

The matter of getting divorced at the end of the month shouldn’t just be empty words. Given that Rowan Alder’s due date was getting closer by the day, the sooner the divorce, the better.

Shawn lay back on the bed, occasionally hearing the "ding" of her phone, feeling a sense of irritation.

He never expected to be the one to lose in this marriage; he thought that when they divorced, he would be the one in the superior position, completely detached.

Yet, in the end, he was the one who was moved.

His heart wavered, but he was also very clear that taking responsibility for Laura was non-negotiable, and he had long since lost his choices in this matter.

The next day, just like the day before, Shawn took Susan Wilde to her workplace, where Simon Rhodes’ car was still parked at the entrance.

After dropping Susan Wilde off, he drove away directly.

He then realized that when you love someone, you wish for their happiness.

Since they were destined to get divorced, if after the divorce she could be with someone she liked, that would be a good thing.

Midway, he received a call from Rowan Alder: "Shaw, where are you?"

Shawn: "What’s wrong?"

Rowan Alder: "My stomach doesn’t feel well."

Shawn: "Where are you?"

Rowan Alder: "At your place."

Shawn hesitated for a moment and said, "I’m coming over now."

When he arrived, he saw Rowan Alder curled up on the sofa. He walked over and asked with concern, "What’s wrong? Do you need to go to the hospital?"

Rowan Alder shook her head: "It’s just some cramps every now and then. It’s very uncomfortable; being pregnant is so hard."

Shawn sat on the sofa, took a deep breath, and gently patted her belly: "Hang in there for a few more months."

Having decided to spend his life with Rowan Alder, Shawn’s mind was free of any other distractions.

Rowan Alder, however, said, "I’m afraid all the suffering I endure might not be worth it."

Shawn: "You’re talking nonsense again."

Rowan Alder sat up and looked at him: "As long as that woman is around, I can’t rest easy. I feel like one day, you’ll abandon me for her."

Shawn took a deep breath, reached out, and held her in his arms: "I will take good care of your child. Focus on nurturing your baby and don’t let your mind wander. I’m going out of town tomorrow for a day or two. When I get back, I’ll take you out to relax."

Rowan Alder nestled in his embrace, her gaze lowered thoughtfully.

Holding her, Shawn’s eyes wandered, his thoughts not on the woman in his arms.

"I haven’t had breakfast," Rowan Alder said.

Shawn snapped back to reality and asked her, "What do you want to eat?"

Rowan Alder: "Anything, whatever you make I’ll eat."

Shawn got up, took off his jacket, and headed to the kitchen: "I’ll see what’s in the fridge."

Rowan Alder glanced at the phone he left casually on the sofa, as if scheming something.

Shawn poked his head out of the kitchen and asked, "How about vegetable porridge and some fried eggs?"

Rowan Alder nodded: "Okay."

While Shawn was busy in the kitchen, Rowan Alder picked up his jacket and fished his phone out of the pocket.

She unlocked it with the password.

In the contacts, she found one named "Skylar".

She stared at the contact for a few seconds, tempted to change it but resisted.

She opened the message page and sent a text to Susan Wilde.

Susan Wilde was in her office eating the breakfast Simon Rhodes brought her. When she heard the text notification, she thought it was from Simon Rhodes.

When she opened it, sure enough, it was from Shawn: Take a moment this afternoon to go back to the marriage house and find a blue file folder for me, it seems to be in the second drawer on the right side of the storage room, check it for me.

Susan Wilde frowned and replied: Why don’t you find it yourself?

A reply came quickly from the other side: I have something to do this afternoon, please.

Susan Wilde thought that Shawn hadn’t been as annoying these past couple of days and figured it wasn’t a particularly difficult task.

She didn’t reply again but had already decided to help him find the document in the afternoon.

Simon Rhodes had a lunch appointment, so he didn’t come to eat with her. Susan Wilde had a bowl of noodles and then took a cab back to their former marital house.

Shawn had given her the door code last time. She entered the old code and successfully unlocked the door.

After opening the door, she looked around, the house was quiet, it seemed as if no one was home.

Susan Wilde casually placed her bag on the cabinet at the entrance and walked straight towards the storage room.

The storage room was on the first floor, diagonally across from her former room, next to the end of the hallway.

The room had no windows, and with the door open, it was utterly dark inside. Susan Wilde turned on the room’s light, spotted the drawers directly ahead, and moved towards the right drawer door. She crouched down and opened the second drawer, seeing some metal parts inside, but no paper documents.

Curiously, she opened the second-to-last one, just as she was about to check what was inside, she heard a sound by the door. When she turned to look, she only saw the figure of a woman and the closing door.

Even without seeing the woman’s face, Susan Wilde could guess it was definitely Rowan Alder.

Realizing this, Susan Wilde understood she had likely fallen into a trap set by Rowan Alder. She immediately stood up and ran to the door, twisting the doorknob, but no matter how she pushed, she couldn’t open the folding door.

Susan Wilde raised her hand and banged on the door: "Rowan Alder!"

There were only footsteps fading into the distance on the other side.

Rowan Alder walked away calmly, tidied up the living room, making it appear as though no one was home.

As she left with her bag, she flicked off the circuit breaker by the doorway, a smile tugging at her lips as she left unhurried.

Shawn would be out tonight and wouldn’t be back for a day or two.

Even if Susan Wilde could withstand not eating or drinking for a day or two, the closed room likely didn’t have enough oxygen for her to last.

She no longer trusted Shawn’s promises; she believed the only way to utterly rid herself of the threat was to make the person who endangered her happiness disappear permanently.

Once the circuit breaker was off, nothing could be seen in the room.

Even someone without claustrophobia would feel panicked in such an environment.

Susan Wilde tried to push open the door, but didn’t know what was blocking it from the outside, making it impossible to open the door.

Recalling that the message came from Shawn, she suspected that this was a plan he and Rowan Alder orchestrated together.

Since they were the only ones who usually came here, if they were unwilling to release her, she might truly meet her end here.

She had been wondering why Shawn’s attitude toward her had shifted so drastically over the past few days. Could it be that he was trying to gain her trust in order to execute their plan?
