CHAPTER 47: CHAPTER 47: YOU HAVE ONLY ME

Renee replied to Jack Yates’s message.

[No, how would I dare to threaten you? I was really almost late.]

After replying, Renee put her phone back in her bag, not caring whether Jack would respond or not.

At noon, Renee had her meal at the school cafeteria with her roommate. After eating, she returned to her old dorm and lay on Ivy Jansen’s bed to watch short dramas together.

After class in the afternoon, Jack Yates came to pick up Renee.

Getting into the car, Renee curiously asked him, "How come you finished work so early today?"

Throughout the two-month summer vacation, Jack was very busy and often stayed late at work. Now, he was off before five.

Jack drove with a calm tone, "There’s a project landing during the holiday, so it’s not too busy now."

When it came to work matters, Renee stopped asking and instead inquired about dinner: "What are we going to eat tonight?"

Jack asked back, "What do you want to eat?"

Regarding food, Jack seemed to have little desire; he always just ate whatever Renee wanted.

The truth was, he didn’t have cravings for food; his greatest desire was Renee.

Renee pouted slightly, pretending to complain while actually being playful: "It’s always me making the choices. Are you still the big boss?"

Jack laughed, "Alright, I’ll choose today."

So, Jack drove Renee to a private restaurant, located in a courtyard at The Southside Alley. The environment was fresh and elegant, and the restaurant itself had a distinguished charm. The dishes were exquisite, and the fish maw rib soup was particularly delicious.

After dinner, Renee and Jack returned together to Cloudstream Lake Apartments.

That night, Jack was more restrained, only indulging twice.

Two times were manageable; Renee wasn’t that tired, going to bed before eleven and woke up at seven in the morning, getting enough sleep.

After the start of school, Renee’s days were calm and happy, attending classes on time and returning to the little home she shared with Jack after class.

Sometimes Jack wasn’t too busy and would come back early to have dinner with her. If he had dinner engagements, she would eat alone, but no matter how late, Jack would return and share the night with her.

However, the arrival of the Mid-Autumn Festival broke their simple and happy routine.

The night before Mid-Autumn, after they were done, Jack held Renee, kissed her, and said, "I’m sorry, I can’t be with you during the day tomorrow."

Renee knew that Jack had to go back to The Yates Family’s old residence to spend Mid-Autumn with his family.

She showed no disappointment and understandingly replied, "It’s okay, you don’t need to worry about my feelings. Don’t worry, I won’t overthink it. Mid-Autumn is a time for family reunions; if you don’t go back to accompany your family, I would feel uneasy."

Jack took a deep breath against her neck, "Renee, I really want to take you back."

Renee stiffened in fear, "Please, don’t ever take me to your home again. That would be putting me in a tough spot."

Jack’s eyes darkened, and he gently bit her neck, holding her tighter.

Renee gasped, patted his hand softly to comfort him: "Jack, don’t be like this, you’re putting me in a difficult position. You should go back tomorrow and stay at your family’s place for a night, spend time with your parents."

She spoke from her heart; she genuinely wished Jack would stay at his family home for a night.

The fact was, his parents were never happy about their relationship.

If Jack were to rush back after a quick meal, his parents would only be more displeased.

It’s understandable; she was initially Caleb Yates’s girlfriend, and he’d even openly brought her to The Yates Family’s old residence. But in the end, she ended up with Jack.

First with the nephew, then with the uncle—no one would be happy in that situation.

More than just unhappy, Jack’s parents scolded him fiercely.

During the summer, Jack’s mom came to Thatcher Manor wanting to see her, but Jack stopped her.

As to what Jack’s mom said to him, Renee had no way of knowing.

So for this Mid-Autumn, it would be best for Jack to spend a night at The Yates Family’s old residence.

The next day, early in the morning, Jack went back to The Yates Family’s old residence, but he returned in the afternoon.

Renee was sitting on the couch watching TV, surprised to see him: "Why are you back?"

Jack raised an eyebrow, "Don’t you want me back?"

Renee hesitated, "... No, I just worry that..."

Jack stepped forward to hug her, kissed her cheek, "My parents have my brother and sister with them—you only have me."

Even though Hank Yates wasn’t his mother’s biological child, he was closer to her than an actual child.

As for his elder brother, Sean Yates, he was their father’s beloved eldest son.

With them there, it didn’t matter whether he was home or not.

Only Renee was solely his.
