CHAPTER 57: I AM ASKING FOR A FRIEND

Leon came back and overheard their conversation, so he decided to stay back. He trusted Amber enough and knew she wouldn’t be so reckless as to play with another person’s life.

She was only reckless with her own life.

And his mother also seemed to trust Amber’s master for some reason. Since he didn’t look inside the room, he didn’t read through her hand signs. He only guessed that they had some connection from Amber’s words.

He sat down right outside the room with his back resting against the wall. His fists were clenched as he awaited the results of Amber’s probing.

Every second felt like an eternity for him.

Just then, the little bunny came towards him and sat beside him to accompany him. Leon could only chuckle at his cute antics.

Fortunately, it didn’t take long before Amber withdrew and said, "Whoever did this to you was more vicious than I imagined."

Leon’s grip tightened upon hearing that, and he stood up and entered the room. "So, how did it go?"

Amber had already sensed him sitting outside, so she wasn’t really surprised. She just gave him a complicated look and said, "As I said, it was done intentionally, and whoever did it was ruthless and vicious to the extreme."

Leon’s heart dropped upon hearing that as anger surged inside him. Even if he didn’t want to take revenge for his mother’s sake, how could he remain indifferent after hearing all of this?

He wanted so badly to go and find whoever did this, but... he had better priorities.

He exhaled, releasing all the anger with that single breath, and went towards his mother, who also had a complicated look on her face.

Kneeling before her, he stared into her beautiful green eyes and asked, "Are you fine now?"

Evelyn instantly lost her frown and smiled at her son. ’Didn’t you always boast to everyone that your mother is very strong? Then why are you so worried? I’m strong and can handle this.’

She pinched his cheeks and then said, ’I raised you up in this condition. Do you think it was easy to do that? I’m fine, so lose that frown. I only taught my son to smile.’

But Leon wasn’t convinced as he pointed at Amber and said, "She’s also strong, but it doesn’t mean she’s fine. She sulks internally because she’s too lonely."

"Oii! Why are you dragging me into this?" Amber almost spat out the juice she had picked up. She glared at Leon as she suppressed the urge to smack his head.

’Don’t talk to her like that. She’s your teacher,’ Evelyn pulled his ear and scolded him.

Amber was very pleased to see his pained expression, even if she knew it was all just an act. But she could also see the worry in his eyes, so she decided to come clean first.

"While it is true that her injury is severe, it was my master who treated her, so you really don’t need to worry. Her soul is as stable as ours after all these years. It has adapted well," Amber said.

Leon noticed something in her words but didn’t point it out. He was just happy that his mother was completely out of danger now, which had been a big worry for him all this time.

"Thanks for the check-up, Amber," Leon said in all seriousness and even gave a low bow. "It really means a lot to us."

"It’s fine. I also saw the work of my master, so we’re even now," Amber said as she stood up. "I’ll leave now. There’s still a lot of stuff to deal with, and you two also probably need to catch up."

"You will come back, right?" Leon asked. "As in to spend the night here."

"Of course I am. There’s no way I’m eating dinner anywhere else when my dear Evelyn can make such delicious food." Amber grinned.

"When did she become your dear?"

"We literally had our souls connected just now. She’s now my best friend."

"Ewww! There’s a kid here, so can you please not mention this connection or anything?" Leon gave her a disgusted look at that.

"Where’s the kid?" Amber asked, looking at the little bunny, but he was just a robot.

"Of course, that’s me," Leon proudly said.

Amber stared at him speechless. She then turned towards Evelyn and said, "You had it hard."

’Same for you now,’ Evelyn shook her head.

Both women glared at Leon, who casually ignored both of them. He was just too happy, so why would he bother with their negative thoughts?

"Anyways, I’m leaving. I’ll probably be back before dinner time."

Saying that, she opened the windows and vanished into thin air.

Evelyn tapped on Leon’s shoulder to get his attention, and when he turned around, she said, ’In your nonsense, I even forgot to ask why you were given the vacation. And what project are you working on? Is it a secret?’

She guessed it might be a secret since it also involved Amber. If that was the case, then she wouldn’t involve herself in his matters.

"Oh, that reminds me. You need to help me," Leon said, just remembering the reason he came back.

Although he wasn’t feeling any guilt now, he knew it was just dormant. It was there in his mind, and if he let it be, then it would cause trouble in the future, so he had to resolve it quickly.

’Sure. What do I need to do?’ Evelyn asked.

"Come with me and answer a few questions," Leon said as he made her sit on the sofa and laid comfortably on her side, putting his head on her lap.

Evelyn let him be willful since it was rare for him to ask something from her. He had always been a sensible child, and it always worried her, so she just let him do whatever he wanted for now.

She could see that something was bothering him, but she waited patiently for him to explain everything properly. When he didn’t speak, she just silently ran her fingers through his soft hair, giving him her silent company.

After a while, Leon finally managed to sort out his thoughts as he asked, "Let’s take a hypothetical situation. So, there’s this man..."

’Is this an "I am asking for my friend" situation?’ Evelyn asked.

"Yes. And don’t interrupt me."

’Alright! Alright. Go on!’ Evelyn had a doting expression as she patted his head lightly.

Leon relaxed in her embrace and said, "There’s this man who was obsessed with creating a drug and finally succeeded after years of hard work. It was partially his own obsession in creating that drug and partially to help people with that drug."

He remembered how the first review had made him smile as he continued in a soft voice, "And it did. So many people benefited from his drug and praised him too. They were grateful for his drug, and the man was very happy with it. But as always, something happened which changed the whole situation."

His voice changed as he continued, "Someone else stole the formula of that drug and used it to spread misery, suffering, and pain. So many people died because of that drug, and many still continue to suffer and struggle against it."
