CHAPTER 86: THE AMBUSH

Catherine’s POV

7 PM took forever to come but it did eventually, though we left a few minutes before the time, making sure that no one saw us.

Once we were out, Kiera pulled her phone out and sent a message to Lucy.

I’m here. Waiting for you. Please hurry.

"Do we really need the masks and gloves? It feels like we are about to commit a murder," I quizzed, rearranging the mask on my face.

"We are not murdering anyone. We don’t even have tools for that. The masks and gloves will save us from getting in prison, if Lucy decides to report to the police."

My mouth rounded in an O shape. "Sorry, I didn’t think of this."

"Yeah, I know. My brain’s always ten steps ahead."

She dragged my hand and pulled us to the back on some flowers and suddenly knelt. I didn’t understand what she was doing. "Come on, kneel Catherine. We have to stay hidden till she arrives. Hopefully, she doesn’t waste our time."

Same here because it felt really weird hiding by the road side. Though we’re lucky that people hardly move around in this estate.

Kiera’s phone made a bop and she immediately raised it to her face. "She just sent a message," she whispered, unlocking her phone.

DUB: I’m on my way. I’m not Usain Bolt, so please don’t text again. I’ll let you know once I get there.

"What the hell?" Kiera scoffed, looking wide-eyed at me. "This ugly bitch can’t even hide her dirty character. Does she always have to be rude?"

"I warned you. Lucy’s a handful. I wonder why she is so spoilt."

Kiera put her phone back where it was. "I can’t wait to whoop her ass. Maybe she will finally learn how to be a respectful human being."

The sound of footsteps came and we immediately held our breath. Lucy was in front of us, typing on her phone.

Kiera hurriedly took her phone out and put it on airplane mode. I was expecting we would come out of our hiding places now but she signaled that we wait a little.

Lucy impatiently paced around and when it seemed like she had waited enough, she turned to leave. Before she could take further steps, Kiera stretched out her hands and grabbed her leg, causing her to fall. We immediately jumped out where we were hiding and Kiera started throwing punches first.

"What the fuck is going on? Who are you? Why are you hitting me? Stop!" Lucy yelled out so many questions as punches collided her face and ribs.

How fast karma knocks on doors. Who would have thought that Lucy would cry for her life like this? The bratty and snappy tongue wasn’t there anymore.

"Please stop. You have the wrong person," she continued to yell but Kiera seemed to not care. Not just Kiera, I didn’t care either. I was mostly focused on slapping that annoying mouth of hers.

Just when we thought that her rudeness had vanished, her stupid voice came. "The both of you will not get away with this. My boyfriend, Julian Vaughn, will make sure of it!"

Hearing her refer to Julian as her boyfriend greatly annoyed me, so now I was hitting and kicking her far worse than Kiera did. Kiera pulled me back, all of a sudden, allowing me to finish her up. Lucy coiled her body, holding her ribs and coughing.

"Why are you doing this? If it’s money you want, I can give it to you but please stop already," her tone was quieter now.

I was tempted to talk, to lower my face to her and let her know that she wasn’t the only person good at gang ups but I couldn’t, so I just kept on hitting her. Kiera returned and resumed from where she stopped.

She grabbed a fistful of Lucy’s hair, raising her head but that dumb bitch tried to be smart. Her hand found its way to Kiera’s face, trying to peel off her mask.

"This bitch, you must be really dumb. How dare you!" Kiera’s voice angrily rose as she slammed Lucy’s head to the ground.

My heart skipped a beat. That was a bit extreme. In fact, that could have killed Lucy. I placed my hand on her left shoulder, a way to remind her that we were only trying to scare her and not kill her.

Kiera looked at me and gave me a "don’t worry. I know what I’m doing" nod.

As for me, I just took a step back. It was getting bloody and no, I wasn’t a coward but I had a conscience too. Lucy’s sobs and cries were enough for me. At least, she now understood the kind of pain she inflicted on me when she ganged up with Sasha to beat me up.

Kiera turned to me and whispered that it was time to leave. We dragged Lucy down the road, so it would be hard for her to get home until we returned.

Getting closer to the house, we stopped by a side and began to take off the gloves and masks. After that, we shoved it into a bag and Kiera brought an idea of us burying it in the ground.

This was giving the vibe of serial killers. And a stupid thought of Kiera actually being one, crept into my mind but I shoved it off immediately. She was helping me out, not doing this for herself.

When we were sure that we didn’t look like people that just committed a crime, we got to the house.

"I’m guessing that’s the friend you mentioned to me about," Gabriel’s voice cut us off guard. He was sitting in the living room and we had failed to notice.

The guilt hanging in my throat stopped me from replying but Kiera was able to save the night like always. "Hi. I’m Kiera and sorry, we can’t really talk now because Catherine is feeling sick and needs to get a rest now."

Gabriel sprang up and rushed to me, placing the back of his palm on my neck. "What’s wrong with her?"

"I am not sure. I think it’s an allergy, after eating at my place, she suddenly started purging and throwing up."

All the while that Kiera was telling these lies, I just stood in awe at how creatively fast she was. Indeed she was right when she said her brain was always ten times ahead.

Trying to make it seem believed, I slowly closed my eyes and opened it again.

"Gabriel, I don’t feel so well but we will talk later," I mumbled. I tugged at Kiera’s shirt, a signal for her to take me to the room.

"I’m really sorry about what’s happening to you. I’ll call the doctor to come check up on you."

Doctor? What the hell! Gabriel’s kindness and thoughtfulness could also be really annoying.

"No, don’t do that," I whispered and Kiera backed me up. "Yes, that won’t be necessary. She already took a pill to help. All she needs now is rest."

"Alright then. I’ll come and check up on you later."

We moved at once and when we got to the stairs, far from Gabriel’s eyes, our pace picked.

"That was so close," I muttered to Kiera and lay on the bed with my back.

She didn’t reply, she just paced around.

"What is it?"

Kiera finally stopped moving and turned to me. "I’m a bit worried. Since your stepbrother is in the sitting room, Lucy can’t be back so soon, else we would be the suspects."

"Huh?" That was all I could say.

"You don’t get it?" She asked and I shook my head. "Fine, let me break it down to you."

"I don’t think he really believed what we told him. I mean... you were a bit off with your acting, you know?"

Fuck me! "Okay, so what’s the deal?"

"If Lucy talks about the ordeal and Gabriel tells that we came back around that time, acting all weird, all the fingers will point to us."

Oh! Oh! She was right. "What can we do?"

She breathed in and out. "Nothing is coming to mind. We only have to hope for two things. The first is that it takes Lucy more than an hour to return and the second is that Gabriel doesn’t say anything."

"I don’t think he will but would it really take an hour for Lucy to get here? I don’t think so," my voice had an edge of fear in it.

"On the other hand, I’m sure about Lucy, I hit her at the right places. It’s Gabriel I’m uncertain about but for now, you have to keep up with the act of feeling unwell... until the night is over at least."

I nodded and got into bed properly, tucking myself beneath the sheet. "What about you? You are leaving?"

She didn’t answer, she walked over to the bed and pulled her shoes off, then climbed the bed. "What kind of friend leaves their sick friend?"
