"Hmm... egg fried rice? It’s been a while since I made that. I’ll make you some when we get back," Erina said, sweeping a strand of hair back. Then she turned and added, "Since we have the basic idea, I’ll inform the Gourmet Street manager to help decorate the interior of the shop. As for everything else, you’re dismissed."
"Dismissed?" Alice immediately blurted out, "What about our strategy? That’s too hasty a dismissal."
"What strategy?" Erina saw no need for such a concept.
"Without a strategy, how will we impress our
customers?" Alice prompted, "This is the Gourmet Street! The most important place in the entire Totsuki Resort, attracting countless guests every year, where Japan’s strongest and best-selling restaurants are located. And now we have to compete with these shops. We just casually said a few words, simply assigned tasks, with no strategic division of labor at all. How will we compete with others?" Alice thought long and hard, still believing Erina’s deployment was too simplistic.
"With what?" Erina slowly walked up to Alice and gently flicked her forehead. "With skill," Erina’s voice was firm and powerful. She looked up and said, "Cooking, in the end, is about solving problems with skill. Any strategy can be shattered with a snap of the fingers in the face of overwhelming culinary prowess."
Erina’s confidence stemmed from her own ability. This transcendent self-assurance, etched on her face, gave her a gallant bearing, a stark contrast to her earlier amiable "virtuous wife" demeanor. After all, Erina would, in the future, dominate the culinary world for decades. Did she even notice the competition on the Gourmet Street? Of course not. The Totsuki Resort’s Gourmet Street, though renowned in Asia and Japan, hadn’t reached the level of global competition.
With Renz and Erina’s current skill, this was merely a small-scale event. Far from just handling it, they could probably casually ace it with a perfect score. Erina stood like a queen, her aura unleashed without reservation. Akira Hayama narrowed his eyes.
A year after graduation, Erina had vanished from the culinary world, no longer even attending basic culinary events. Then there was Erina’s daughter. A moment’s thought revealed that Erina had spent the past year pregnant and raising her daughter.
Akira Hayama had actually thought that under such circumstances, Erina would stagnate, as culinary skill requires constant interaction and long-term practice. But now, it seemed Erina had not only not stagnated but had perhaps even advanced further, judging by the natural vitality radiating from her.
"Let’s go, we still need to ask Dojima Gin-senpai about our dormitory assignments," Erina said, frowning.
"How else would they assign them? Men with men, women with women, that’s all," Renz said, following behind Erina after a moment’s thought.
"What about us?" Erina pinpointed the crucial question.
"Oh, right, our situation is a bit special," Renz slapped his
forehead, finally realizing the real issue. They were a legally married couple; theoretically, they should be assigned to live together.
"That’s why we need to go ask Dojima Gin-senpai about dormitory assignments," Erina sighed.
"Could you hold Rina for a bit? My arm is getting tired,"
Erina said with a hint of disdain. "Maybe we should just let my grandfather take her for a few days."
"Wouldn’t that be awkward?" Renz took Rina from Hisako
and playfully tickled her. "Rina doesn’t seem to like the old man very much."
"How can you tell she doesn’t like him?" Erina asked, puzzled.
"Whenever the old man holds Rina, she cries and fusses.
Isn’t that obvious?" Renz was even more surprised, thinking Erina, as a mother, would be more sensitive to this.
"It’s normal for babies to cry and fuss," Erina said after a moment’s thought, not sensing any major issue. Her grandfather wouldn’t harm Rina. Rina was probably just shy; if she spent more time with the old man, she’d likely get over it.
"Erina, I’ve noticed something about you. Before you had a child, you longed for one every day, but now that she’s here, you’re quite disdainful," Renz couldn’t help but say.
"Isn’t our daughter adorable? We can take care of her ourselves; there’s no need for the old man to do it."
"Look, Rina, say ’Papa’," Renz said, gently rubbing Rina’s soft, chubby little face and grinning at her.
"Papa," Rina cooed sweetly.
"But she doesn’t call me Mama, so what’s adorable about
that?" Erina huffed, "And she’s a pain in the neck, I have to take care of everything for her, and the little thing isn’t even grateful."
"Our two-person world was perfectly fine. Adding her immediately ruined the atmosphere. And you only pay attention to her, holding her here, playing with her there, and even speaking up for her," Erina said without looking directly at Renz. Erina, who had been speaking nicely to Renz moments before, felt a sudden surge of irritation seeing him completely devoted to Rina.
Renz’s mouth dropped. He was dumbfounded. In the past, Erina would get upset with him because Rina clung to him, her father, and not to her, her mother. Now, Erina was upset with him because he, the father, was too attentive to Rina, the daughter, and not to her. This was an impossible situation. What was he supposed to do?
Hurt Rina to win favor? Renz could never do that. Rina was his little tsundere, his little darling. Erina was his beloved too.
Damn it.
I knew having a daughter would bring trouble.
What kind of unique "Shura field" (conflict) is this between daughter and mother? And Rina can’t even talk yet! When Rina reaches the age of understanding and can speak, won’t she infuriate Erina to the point of spitting blood?
"Then, how about you punch me a few times to let off some steam?" Renz thought long and hard, feeling there was no other solution.
"Can hitting someone solve problems? And I don’t believe in domestic violence," Erina immediately rejected Renz’s suggestion.
"Then, how about I kiss you a few times? To show you how much I value you?" Renz’s final choice was to reason with Erina, expressing that he truly hadn’t "transferred his affections." He had to care for his daughter, but he loved his wife too.
"That’s so greasy, I don’t want that," Erina stuck out her tongue, making a "disgusted" face.
"Then what do you want me to do?" Renz asked in a "desperate" tone.
"It’s simple. For the next few days, Rina absolutely must be entrusted to my grandfather’s care. If the old man takes care of her for a few days, I won’t feel this frustrated, and I’ll be much more comfortable," Erina offered a solution. "Besides, these next few days will be very busy, and finding time to care for Rina is also a problem," Erina added. "We can’t possibly cook and take care of a child at the same time, can we?"
"What you said is not without reason," Renz mused, realizing Erina had a point. The next few days would be busy, and they wouldn’t be able to care for Rina. They would need someone relatively free to look after her. But then he thought, couldn’t Hisako Arato help? On second thought, Hisako wasn’t married and had no experience with children, so she might not be able to care for her well. The old man was relatively free and had cared for Erina since she was young, so he certainly had experience with children. He was indeed a good choice.
Yet, Renz couldn’t shake the feeling that Erina was intentionally trying to send Rina away.
