Mystic Overlord: Reading Gives Strength
Chapter 964 958: The Grand Witch's Commission
"We really haven't seen each other in a long time."
Ronald and Teresa were actually quite familiar with each other.
So after casually greeting the old witch, Ronald did not maintain any guest-like restraint. Instead, before the witch could offer him a seat, he found a chair himself and sat down, then jokingly said:
"But Ms. Teresa, you left in such a hurry back then."
"When I returned to Springs Apartment, I originally wanted to share the details of the fight with you. But who would have thought you left the city immediately!"
"Hahaha—" The old witch Teresa suddenly burst into cheerful laughter.
Her delighted demeanor was just like a young person.
However, Teresa was indeed a wise old witch and she of course sensed a hint of complaint in Ronald's tone.
As a representative of the "Circle of Twelve Witches" in this city.
Teresa immediately made a decision.
Then, the elder stood up from her rocking chair and bowed to Ronald, expressing apology:
"Ronald, I really was at fault back then."
"It was just that the problems within our school were quite serious, and to ensure a safe departure from Greed back to Eirene, I had no choice but to take such measures."
"..."
"You... never mind, I didn't suffer any real damage because of that incident."
Facing Teresa's response, Ronald opened his mouth but eventually decided to dismiss the matter.
This was the wisdom of Teresa being the elder.
Setting aside some unnecessary pride and apologizing directly in the moment.
Given the pleasant exchange of experiences Ronald and Teresa had at Springs, Ronald couldn't use the topic to say anything further.
Having received Ronald's response, the old witch then sat back in her chair, smiling as she signaled to the others:
"Sit, everyone, sit."
"Why are you all standing? Let's sit down and talk slowly."
With those words, the elder used her spell to expertly order chairs that had been stored away to come out, arranging them in a neat circle around the office.
Once everyone was seated, Ronald immediately guided the discussion back on track:
"Ms. Teresa, on the way here I heard from Fanny that you specifically invited me over as there seems to be a very important commission?"
The old witch immediately nodded to confirm:
"Yes, I do have some matters I would like to commission you to investigate."
Before Teresa could elaborate on the commission details, Ronald interrupted ahead:
"In that case, I must first make a statement—"
"The fleet from Greed will only be anchored at the port for three days, no matter what I will be leaving Capen by then, and will not be delayed by other matters. Additionally, as I'm on a steamship from Greed, due to my position, I can't engage in actions too aggressive."
"..."
"Hmm... three days, huh..."
Upon hearing Ronald's information.
Teresa murmured softly but soon regained her smile:
"That time should be entirely sufficient."
"After all, the commission I want to ask you is merely the simplest investigation work, if during that period any potential combat issues arise, you could easily choose to withdraw immediately."
"And given your strength Mr. Ronald—this ought to be a very easy task."
"..."
An easy investigation where one can choose to withdraw at any time?
Faced with Teresa's proposal, Ronald quickly voiced his own doubts:
"It sounds like the task is quite simple, so shouldn't it pose no issues for you on your end either. Given this situation, why involve an external element potentially causing unforeseeable complications?"
"A person of my standing would likely bring considerable trouble, wouldn't I?"
Teresa shook her head with a smile:
"Precisely because of your identity, it's able to play a better role in this situation."
With those words, Teresa gestured behind her with fingers.
The office window promptly opened under her spell control.
Facing the lingering dim light outside, Teresa spoke with a calm and profound tone:
"This city, and even this country, are currently jointly managed by our 'Circle of Twelve Witches' and the 'Dawn Spell Society.' Both parties maintain restraint and mutual understanding in many matters."
"But just a month ago, something quite concerning happened over by the port. Although our 'Circle of Twelve Witches' wishes to figure out the situation, it so happens to be within the jurisdiction of the 'Dawn Spell Society.'
Ronald raised an eyebrow hearing this:
"The 'Dawn Spell Society' doesn't want to share intelligence with you?"
"According to them, they themselves don't quite understand it, and advise against our 'Circle of Twelve Witches' getting involved." Teresa directly revealed the 'Dawn Spell Society's' response, then began to present her viewpoint, "However, this matter could potentially have a significant impact on Capen, and even Eirene as a whole."
"For us, the 'Circle of Twelve Witches,' to choose ignorance at this time seems..."
At this point, the elder witch Teresa's expression had turned to a bitter smile.
Ronald understood her implication and chimed in:
"So because of the previous cooperative understanding, your side doesn't wish to have overt conflict with the 'Dawn Spell Society.' Therefore, under these circumstances, you plan to introduce a third-party caster to help investigate the details of this matter."
"Mr. Ronald, your position happens to suit this perfectly."
Upon hearing Ronald spelled it out to this extent, Teresa candidly stated:
"One of the most powerful original holders in the world, with identity from Greed, and also a scion of the Adler family lineage."
"Even the 'Dawn Spell Society,' cannot do anything to you, or dare to do anything to you."
"..."
After hearing Teresa's reasons, Ronald crossed his arms and seriously pondered for a while before confirming:
"This matter is purely an investigation, and won't harm anyone, nor will it trigger any conflicts?"
The elder witch Teresa responded both in tone and expression very sincerely:
"I guarantee it is solely an investigation, will not harm anyone, nor will it stir any conflict."
"..."
"Since that's the case, I can help."
Ronald contemplated again for a few seconds but ultimately agreed to Teresa's commission.
The other party had taught him much knowledge at Springs before.
Even out of that past interaction, Ronald was willing to lend a helping hand:
"So, what exactly is going on now?"
Teresa immediately began illustrating the whole matter's situation:
"About ten kilometers from the coast, there is a lighthouse island used for navigation, where our people discovered an unprecedented and quite strange magic fluctuation. I hope you can verify what exactly happened there!"
