Naruto: Thrown Into the Leaf
Chapter 45: The Last of the Giants
"It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change."
— Charles Darwin

The man hesitated, then sighed. "Her father died before she was born. Her mother… was a kunoichi. Never came back from a mission. I raised Hikari here, kept her away from the wars. But she's always been like this. Strong. Too strong for a girl her age."
From across the room, Hikari spoke without looking at them.
"I can hear you, you know. And I'm not too strong — they were just too weak."
Her grandfather closed his eyes briefly, muttering. "…See what I mean?"
"She takes after her mother," he added, softer now. "Always wanted to follow in her footsteps. Always talking about being a ninja… about helping people."
"I'm sorry for your loss," Hiruzen said, his voice low. "But tell me… do you believe hiding her here will keep her safe forever?"
The man's hands stilled.
Hiruzen leaned forward slightly, his voice quiet but firm. "The world is changing. War doesn't wait for permission before it comes knocking on a village's door. You've seen it — even here. Bandits, rogue shinobi, the hungry taking from the weak. If the day comes when she must defend herself — and you are not here for her — will you regret not giving her the chance to grow stronger?"
The old man glanced at Hikari, who was now leaning against the doorway, pretending she wasn't listening — though her eyes betrayed her.
"I'm not saying she should become a weapon," Hiruzen continued. "But in Konoha, she could learn discipline, control… and how to survive anything. Not just for herself — for those she wants to protect."
Hikari finally spoke. "Grandpa… if I could go, I'd come back stronger. No one would push us around. Not ever."
Her grandfather sighed heavily, rubbing his temple. "…You sound just like your mother."
"It wouldn't have to be forever," Hiruzen said with a faint smile. "A visit. A chance to train. See if she likes the village. And I give you my word — she will be protected while she's there."
He studied her for a long moment, then reached into his sleeve and placed a small scroll on the counter.
"If she ever wishes to train properly… have her bring this to Konoha."
As he turned to leave, Hiruzen's thoughts lingered.
A talent like this, growing wild in some corner of the Land of Fire… she could be an asset to Konoha. And perhaps… something more.
[Arrival in Konoha]
The Second Great Ninja War ended, but peace never lasted long.
By the time the Third Great Ninja War ignited, the world had already changed — and so had Hikari.
Hiruzen still remembered the day she returned to the village.
A year had passed since he'd met the fifteen-year-old girl at the inn. Now, she was older, she was in travel-worn clothes, a simple bag resting on her shoulder. Without a trace of hesitation, she walked into the Hokage's Tower, that same scroll clenched firmly in her hand.
"I'm here to train," she'd said simply, dropping the scroll on his desk.
Under Hiruzen's orders, she was tested. It didn't take long for the instructors to realize she wasn't like the other recruits. Her physical strength was staggering, but it was her endurance, her refusal to yield, that set her apart from the others. While other shinobi fell after hours of drills, she stayed standing and glaring as if daring the fatigue to touch her.
When the Third War intensified, she was assigned to the front lines — dangerous reconnaissance, close combat raids, and supply-line protection. Hiruzen had watched her name appear in report after report. Missions completed. Enemies repelled. Allies saved.
The wars took their toll.
By the end, she had lost comrades, shed blood, and something in her eyes had hardened. The girl who once fought with reckless fire now moved with a colder, sharper resolve. Yet her purpose never wavered — her will to protect common people and fight for peace remained unshaken.
Hikari's strength and boldness quickly made her a well-known figure in the village. But what surprised many was how easily she drew people to her. Beneath her blunt honesty lay an unshakable loyalty — a combination that earned her the trust of some of Konoha's strongest kunoichi.
Mikoto Uchiha was the first. They met during a joint mission when a kunai, thrown in the chaos of battle, came hurtling toward Mikoto's face. Hikari caught it mid-air with one hand, the blade stopping inches from its mark.
"Fast hands," Mikoto said with a wry smile.
Kushina Uzumaki was the next friend she made. Through Kushina, Hikari came to know the legendary Sannin — Tsunade Senju in particular. Before long, the four of them regarded each other like sisters. Hiruzen often sent them on missions together, though Kushina's role was limited. As a jinchūriki, she was forbidden to leave the village except under the most dire circumstances, leaving Hikari and Mikoto to be paired for countless operations.
Years passed, and those friendships became her anchor. They celebrated victories, endured near-death moments, and shared sake under the village lights. Hikari's reputation grew — not just as a fighter, but as someone who would walk through fire for her comrades.
When the Third Great Ninja War reached its peak, she was among the first to volunteer for the most dangerous assignments. She fought alongside Mikoto with lethal precision, and when injuries forced her from the field, it was often Tsunade's hands that brought her back.
Her skills were formidable — unmatched physical power, mastery of lightning release, and a near-divine command of earth release. "It's the way of my people," she once said. "The earth is like an extra limb."
On the battlefield, she could swallow entire squads alive, burying them in shifting terrain or crushing them beneath stone. Some enemies never even saw her coming before the ground opened beneath their feet. And her affinity for Senjutsu — made her even more dangerous.
It wasn't long before even Hiruzen spoke to her with the respect reserved for Kage-level shinobi. To say she was among the strongest alive was no exaggeration.
Physically, Hikari was unlike anyone Konoha had ever seen. She was ten feet tall, her broad frame and powerful build making her seem almost inhuman. But her size was no accident — she came from a people known simply as the Giants.
Giants were rare in the Land of Fire — so rare that they were thought to be nearly extinct. In Hiruzen's lifetime, he had seen only two: Hikari, and her grandfather. Their disappearance was no mystery. Long ago, people discovered that a Giant's body held natural cures for many diseases. Greed and cruelty followed, and endless experiments were carried out on their kind. In time, their numbers dwindled until none were left… or so it was believed. Hiruzen would not have been surprised if Hikari and her grandfather were the last of their kind.
Most in the village didn't even know what a Giant was. Born with immense strength and stamina, they were built for battle — but it was not brute force alone that defined them. Giants shared a deep bond with nature itself. They moved through forests and mountains as if the land guided their every step. This closeness made them uniquely gifted in Senjutsu. While an ordinary shinobi might spend years learning to sense natural energy, with no guarantee of success, a Giant could feel it as easily as drawing breath.
Her grandfather had been the one to teach her the way of their kind.
Earth Release, to him, was not just a jutsu. It was like a conversation to the earth itself.
"The ground breathes," he would say, pressing her small hands into the soil until her fingertips tingled.
And she learned. Learned that the ground was not dead stone and dirt, but a living ally.
She learned to hear the slow heartbeat beneath her feet, to read the whisper of vibrations like a story only the earth could tell.
She learned to pour her chakra into it — as a greeting — until she and the land no longer felt like two separate things but one.
When she fought, the battlefield itself moved with her. Stone walls rose to block attacks, the ground split open to swallow entire platoons, and jagged pillars shot upward to impale those who dared to stand in her way. With her Senjutsu amplifying every strike, she became less a shinobi and more a force of nature.
In the chaos of the Third Great Ninja War, her enemies knew her by a single name — The War Maiden.
