CHAPTER 430: MONSTERS

“I was just passing by.” Lin Wan ‘Er pulled her hair behind her ear. “Pi Wan heard that you haven’t had breakfast and told me to bring some for you.”

Fatty had to wonder if the Doctor learned his skills from Boss Lin. Thankfully, Pi Wan was not a normal person, or else he’d go broke soon enough.

However… Fatty glanced at the Doctor. The Doctor focused on his meal. The dishes like chili crawfish, and cheese-baked lobsters that the Doctor loved hadn’t been touched. The Doctor took slow sips of the porridge and munched on the corn bread softly. He didn’t look like he was in a good mood.

Fatty believed that it was a negative influence from the nightmare. After all, they had to watch their teammates die one after another to save their lives. Fatty felt bad due to the pressure.

Fatty pried off the crab leg and handed it to the Doctor. However, he had just raised his hand when Jiang Cheng said, “I’m not hungry.” Fatty paused. He was confused. He thought about giving the crab leg to Boss Lin, but it felt inappropriate, so he placed it back in his bowl. He glanced at the Doctor. Fatty felt that something was not right.

After breakfast, Fatty volunteered to clean up. The Doctor claimed to be tired and went to rest. To Fatty’s surprise, after he packed up the leftovers and walked out of the kitchen, Boss Lin was still there.

She sat on the couch. The sun filtered through the window. Her profile was exposed to the light. She was captivatingly beautiful. Sensing the gaze, Lin Wan ‘Er turned to meet Fatty’s gaze. The latter panicked. He stammered. “No, no, no…”

Lin Wan ‘Er was used to this. She asked, “Do you have coffee?”

“Yes.” Fatty ran back into the kitchen. He found the high-class coffee given by Pi Wan and brewed a pot for Boss Lin. He used the brand new pot gifted by Pi Wan.

“Don’t you want a cup?” Lin Wan ‘Er took a sip and narrowed her eyes at Fatty, who sat across from her.

Fatty placed his hands on his knees obediently. Fatty felt a pain around his neck. It was probably the effect from last time. “I’ll drink it later.” Fatty licked his lips and answered respectfully. “Boss Lin, if you think the coffee is too bitter, I can add some sugar for you.” The woman radiated a fatal charm. Her face looked like it had been painted. The precious thing was that it was a charm collected through time. However, Boss Lin was very young. Time had left no trace on her face.

Knowing that it was impolite to stare, Fatty forced himself to look away.

“Wnag Fugui,” Lin Wan ‘Er suddenly said.

“Yes, Boss Lin.” Fatty nodded. He waited patiently. He was not clever, but he could sense that Boss Lin stayed because she had things to tell him.

“How long have you known Xiao Cheng?”

Xiao Cheng…

Probably only Boss Lin dared to call the Doctor that. Fatty thought about it before replying, “Less than a month.”

Lin Wan ‘Er’s red lips curled into a brilliant smile. “How did you meet?”

“I ran into some trouble. It was Xiao… the Doctor who saved me,” He corrected himself. He couldn’t tell Boss Lin about the nightmare for her benefits. Just as he considered how to make up a story, he was surprised that Boss Lin didn’t pursue this topic.

Using this opportunity, Fatty changed the subject. “Boss Lin.” Fatty asked curiously, “How do you know the Doctor? I feel like… he admires you a lot.”

“Really?” Lin Wan ‘Er took another sip and revealed an unfathomable smile. “I suppose I am his guardian.”

Fatty frowned. Guardian…

This title felt like the Doctor was imprisoned by the woman, but Fatty didn’t think anyone could imprison the Doctor… Plus, a guardian was more like the term to refer to the person who replaced an absent parent. However, seeing Boss Lin’s face, Fatty couldn’t connect the two.

“Xiao Cheng was young when he was abandoned. He was raised at an orphanage.” Her voice was beautiful, but the story was heart-wrenching. “His family has never shown up since.”

“I remember the Doctor said that… he was an orphan,” Fatty added.

“He treated the people who abandoned him as dead.” Lin Wan ‘Er smiled lightly. “You’ve known him for a while. You should be able to tell.”

Fatty remembered the many vows the Doctor made about his parents. He swallowed. He finally found the reason.

“What happened?” He asked carefully.

“The orphanage’s director died. No one took over. The place shut down. The children were sent away, but around 10 of them remained.” It was clear that the woman didn’t want to talk about these. However, her face was serene. It was like the calm before the storm. “These kids were not likeable. It was hard to explain.

“The other children would fight to show off to get adopted. Some danced and others sang. Even the dullest among them would try to act clever to tell some stories to get people to adopt them. That way, they could leave the dead orphanage.” Lin Wan ‘Er sighed with the memory.

“In less than three months, we sent away more than seventy children. The massive orphanage eventually only had around 10 kids left.

“These kids were aloof and refused to hang around people. They were masters at spacing out at the window. They could go a whole day without talking.” Lin Wan ‘Er said, “From dawn to dusk.

“Who would love kids like that?” Lin Wan ‘Er whispered. “Eventually, people stopped coming. The adopted children came up with the rumour that the abandoned kids were cursed. They do not know how to talk and lack human emotions. They were cruel and crazy. Once they were adopted, they would grow up into monsters.”
