CHAPTER 452: CHAPTER 448: IN THIS LIFE, DESERVED TO BE ABANDONED (2)

After Charlotte Harrison attended Michael Wayne’s funeral, she didn’t linger in Eastern City and hurried back to Southern County with James Smith.

Sophie Smith sat in the passenger seat, eyes closed, head leaning against the car window, her ears plugged with white earphones.

After handling some follow-up matters for Christopher Smith’s funeral, Asher Land rushed back to the car. He opened the car door and, upon seeing Sophie’s exhausted face, felt a pang in his heart.

These past days, she hadn’t slept more than two hours.

Even when he held her at night, trying to coax her to sleep a little, she invariably woke up in less than ten minutes.

But she’s pregnant now; how can she endure such exhaustion?

He didn’t start the car, fearing the engine noise would wake her, so he left the car parked by the roadside.

What he didn’t know was that Sophie wasn’t actually asleep at that moment. However, she didn’t open her eyes; she knew how worried Asher had been about her these days, and she was only doing this to put him at ease.

After more than two hours, she finally opened her eyes.

"Asher, let’s go home," she said, forcing a faint smile on her lips.

"Okay," Asher responded softly.

When the car passed a dessert shop, she suddenly asked him to stop.

"I feel a bit hungry. Could you get me some sweets?"

A moment of surprise flashed in Asher’s eyes. For the past two days, she had only had some porridge, which he had practically forced her to drink. Now she was actively asking for food?

"Sure, I’ll get them right away."

He opened the car door, and with long strides, quickly headed to the dessert shop.

The smile that had hovered at Sophie’s lips slowly faded.

Asher bought a lot, all her past favorites.

Sophie forced herself to eat three custard tarts despite her upset stomach.

"Now that I’m full, I feel much better," she said to him with a smile.

Asher casually draped his hand on the steering wheel, his gaze fixed on a congested lane ahead.

"Sophie, you don’t have to pretend around me." His voice seemed to come from a distant place, and Sophie was slightly startled. Had he seen through everything she did?

She focused her gaze on him. Two days ago, his injury was severe, yet he disregarded his discomfort to help her with Christopher’s affairs.

He still had a bruise at the corner of his mouth; his forehead, sutured with three stitches, was covered with a patch of white gauze, yet even like this, his handsome features were unmistakable.

Sophie withdrew her gaze and stared ahead.

She kept silent. Indeed, why pretend to be strong in front of him?

Asher drove back to the Land Family villa. He opened the car door for her, undid her seatbelt, and carried her upstairs.

"Nanny Garcia, call Doctor Lewis over."

"I’m fine..."

"Just listen to me, okay?" He placed her on the bed.

"Young Master, does Miss Smith need something to eat? The kitchen has prepared a lot..." Nanny Garcia felt uneasy seeing Sophie’s frail appearance.

"I’ve eaten, Nanny Garcia, no need for any trouble." Sophie declined. Having just eaten three custard tarts, she still felt sickly sweet and feared she would really throw up if she ate more.

Nanny Garcia looked at Asher, wanting to know his thoughts.
