Chapter 1219 - 670: Preparing to Become a Godfather
Nia took a small piece of steak, suddenly looking up, she said: "Oh, by the way, Dad asked me to tell you about Elliot wanting to make you his Godfather. If you don't mind, you should start preparing for it."
Jimmy: "Hmm, no problem, having a godson isn't bad at all. It's like preparing for fatherhood in advance."
Recognizing a godson isn't such a simple thing. For ordinary people, they'd just hold a small ceremony and confirm it between the two families. But since Kevin mentioned it like this, he definitely wants it to be more formal, so it's likely they have to go to the church.
This is also Jimmy's first time doing this, and he's not familiar with the process, but that's not a problem. To say the least, he knows some people in the church. He can just ask Father Rodney about it, as he surely knows.
After dinner, Jimmy noticed it was still early, so he suggested they go out for a walk, maybe catch a movie. In the Upper West Side, Jimmy and their safety was assured enough to go out at night, though they still needed to be a bit cautious, as Manhattan isn't entirely safe. But since both Jimmy and Nia have the ability to protect themselves, they weren't too worried.
Of course, they safely watched a movie and went home without any incident, as there was nothing in particular they wanted to see. They just picked a movie that was about to start. Neither of them were movie enthusiasts, so it was just to pass the time.
That night, after a busy time, the two lay in bed. Jimmy, holding Nia, played with a lock of her hair, finally voiced his thoughts, and sought Nia's opinion on whether they should prepare for pregnancy in advance.
Nia looked up at Jimmy in surprise. Jimmy nodded, indicating he was serious, and she then began to seriously consider it.
As Jimmy expected, although Nia was married, she hadn't thought of having children so soon. That night, she still didn't make a decision, and Jimmy wasn't in a rush, as this wasn't something that could be resolved in a day or two. They had plenty of time to consider.
The next day was the weekend, so Jimmy wasn't in a hurry to return to the office. He just called Mark to see if there was anything urgent, and then went to the church to find Father Rodney.
Of course, going to the church meant he had to say a prayer first, even if it was just for show, he had to maintain this appearance. Jimmy had never participated in church activities before, and as a churchgoer, he was certainly not qualified. But he had justifiable reasons, and since no one was picking on him, he went ahead with it.
Father Rodney was unexpectedly not there, which surprised Jimmy. Other priests at the church were unfamiliar with Jimmy. They might have heard his name, but without him identifying himself, they politely declined his request for Father Rodney's whereabouts.
This wasn't a big problem, but since he planned to inquire about the process of becoming a godfather, he didn't ask anyone else. He decided to wait until Father Rodney returned.
After leaving the church, Jimmy called Father Rodney and was surprised to find out he had gone to the seminary and would be back the next day. That solved the problem, and since Jimmy's weekend was relatively free, he could come back the next day.
Spending the day with Nia shopping, doing spa treatments, and having meals at Nia's house, the day quickly passed by. Living close made things convenient. Whenever they didn't feel like cooking or dining out, they'd go to her mother's place for meals. Her family didn't mind, as Nia was an only daughter, so Jimmy had absolutely no guilt about it.
As for Kevin, his opinion didn't matter much. When it came to family status, Kevin wasn't much better off than Jimmy. So after dinner, while Nia chatted with her mother, Jimmy and Kevin went to the study room, smoked cigars, drank, and talked.
Recently, Kevin participated in many activities. Combined with earlier preparations, it's almost certain he'll take over as police commissioner soon. The previous commissioner was a close associate of the former mayor. Although they were from the same party, many things weren't done excessively. But with a new mayor, some adjustments were inevitable, and the future arrangements would depend on the upcoming decisions.
Upon becoming commissioner, Kevin would have one foot in the circle of senior public officials, as the NYPD commissioner is an appointed position, not an elected one. So, what Kevin needed to do was manage his image, and maybe one day he could even become mayor.
Kevin appreciated Jimmy greatly, and it's undeniable that several influential people recently started supporting him due to church connections. In fact, the wedding caused a much larger ripple in certain circles than Jimmy had imagined, especially among those aware of some of the church's secret affairs.
Jimmy's identity was no longer just that of a simple FBI agent; it had become entwined with the Church's influence. In the eyes of some, he was seen as a devout believer and a member valued highly by the Church, which was far more than an average believer.
Kevin was well aware of this, which is why he took the matter of Jimmy accepting a godson so seriously, as the associated connections could benefit Elliot, and even Alex Green could gain from it. These things might not matter to Jimmy, but Kevin had to consider them.
Jimmy shared his plans with Kevin, though the process wasn't decided yet, and he would need to wait for Father Rodney's return. As for the guest list for the ceremony, Kevin and others would naturally be included.
The next day, Jimmy returned to the church. Father Rodney was back, and he wasn't alone. Accompanying him were two young priests who seemed quite different from the usual priests; they wore more serious expressions.
Father Rodney: "Jimmy, is there something you need?"
Jimmy: "Yes, I wanted to ask Father Rodney for some guidance on a small matter. But, who are these two?"
Father Rodney: "They are newcomers I brought back from the seminary. They'll be assigned to other churches to manage local affairs."
Jimmy nodded in greeting to the two, then explained his situation: "I had taken care of a kidnap case where the child involved wants to make me his Godfather. I wanted to consult on what I need to do if I want to accept him as a godson. I'm not very familiar with this process."
Father Rodney looked at Jimmy in surprise: "A godson? Who is he?"
Jimmy: "Just a kid I got along with. Due to the kidnapping, he had some psychological issues, and I helped in his treatment. He's quite a great little guy."
Father Rodney nodded: "The process isn't complicated. If you're sure, you can tell me the time, and I will make the arrangements."
Jimmy: "Right here?"
Father Rodney nodded affirmatively, as it was a small matter and didn't warrant going to Staten Island.
Jimmy: "Alright, I'll discuss it with others about the timing, and let you know once we're decided. Thank you, Father Rodney."
Father Rodney: "You're welcome, Jimmy."
As Jimmy left, one of the priests behind Father Rodney asked: "Father Rodney, was it for him that you rushed back? Who is he?"
Father Rodney shook his head: "He's just an associate of ours. But he doesn't concern you for now, so you don't need to worry. Alright, let's continue with your lessons. Soon, you will have to handle things independently."
Jimmy left the church and drove home. Plainly, even the Church was having a tough time lately, as the surge in supernatural events had already prompted them to deploy new recruits. What Father Rodney mentioned earlier clearly indicated there weren't enough experienced exorcist priests available for assignments across the region, necessitating the recruitment of newcomers from the seminary to handle such matters.
Based on Jimmy's recent involvement with several supernatural incidents, aside from the excessive workload causing staff shortages, another reason seemed to be the casualties among exorcist priests. It's possible a batch of seasoned priests had already retired from frontline duties or were even called to meet the Lord.
