To add, in the United States, coroners and forensic doctors share the same role of investigating the causes and manner of death and signing death certificates, but their qualifications are different.

The coroner's system originated from Medieval England and represents an office extending from that era. Coroners are appointed by the government or elected locally and do not need a medical degree. However, in the United States, many coroners are indeed forensic pathologists, emphasizing professionalism.

Forensic doctors, on the other hand, are usually appointed by the government as forensic pathology experts, or some are recommended by local medical institutions and must have a medical degree.

Different states have their own definitions for coroner and forensic systems. Arkansas, a conservative state, still retains the coroner system, while most states have replaced coroners with a forensic system.

Moreover, this is related to population: in less populated areas, professional forensic doctors are extremely scarce, so these places can only establish a coroner system and have hospital doctors serve as coroners, which makes it quite flexible.

The next day, Jimmy and Cage visited the coroner's office, but Dr. Kevin had already left. He had performed the autopsy and submitted the coroner's report the previous day.

According to Dr. Kevin's report, the deceased was between 45-48 years old. The fatal injury was a gunshot wound to the back of the head. There were no other marks on the body, the fingernails were intact, and there was a blunt force trauma on the forehead, which had likely been caused by falling to the ground after being shot.

Such a basic report hardly left anything to be investigated further.

Cage and Jimmy examined the belongings found on the body, finding no wallet or identification, making it impossible to confirm the identity of the deceased. It was another unsolved case.

The body was currently in the morgue, neither of them was interested in viewing it, so they took a copy of the autopsy report and headed back to the police station.

Jimmy had been on the night shift the previous evening and saw that the morning's case looked like a dead end; he wasn't eager to work overtime, so he went home to rest and "free-rode" two hours of overtime.

In cases like this, where leads are inexistent, one can only retain the records and wait for future discoveries to consolidate and process them. The county police had a limited number of officers, making it impossible to dedicate significant resources to every case.

For Jimmy, this wasn't too thrilling; after all, he had already personally killed someone before, and discovering a body didn't keep him from sleeping.

The only regret was not having used his Heart Eye Ability to detect the shooter's position upon hearing the gunshot yesterday. By the time they followed procedure, the person had already fled.

He also discovered a downside to the Heart Eye Ability: its limited range. Yesterday's observation had a range of merely about 10 meters, and he wondered if this would increase in the future. Additionally, it seemed to cover only a 180-degree field of view in front of him; he had to turn his head around to increase coverage.

Jimmy headed back to the precinct for his night shift. During the day, the county police had contacted the local city police to check if anyone was missing who might correspond to the discovered body, but that was all they could do for now. So Jimmy didn't linger at the station and went on patrol right away.

Around 10 PM, the dispatch center informed Jimmy that an officer from LRPD nearby had requested backup during a shootout; Jimmy immediately headed there with his siren blaring. Such backup requests were rare, given that his patrol area was on the outskirts of West Suburb, making most of his shifts relatively uneventful compared to other county police patrols.

Upon arrival, Jimmy parked his car outside where LRPD's two patrol cars were already in position.

The city police quickly briefed, "This household has an elderly lady alone. Around 9:30 PM, someone broke into her house and attempted a robbery."

The elderly lady had excused herself to fetch some jewelry and then rushed upstairs into the bedroom bathroom, locked the door, and called the police. The perpetrator was still inside the room, unclear if he had taken the old woman hostage.

The suspect had a handgun. When LRPD officers arrived, the suspect fired a shot from a second-floor window at the police cars. It was unclear whether it was his gun or one belonging to the old lady; the 911 call had disconnected, and redialing was unsuccessful.

A city police officer had moved to the back of the house to prevent the suspect from escaping. There were two officers in front and Jimmy, totaling four officers on the scene with no additional backup yet.

Jimmy grasped the situation and pulled out his handgun as he circled to the side of the house. Peering through a window, he noted that the suspect wasn't on the first floor. Pressing against the wall, he activated his Heart Eye Ability. Black and gray lines began sketching the interior layout of the house in his mind, revealing two human figures: one at the staircase corner possibly holding something, and another in a small room on the second floor, slumped against the wall on the floor, motionless.

The figure on the second floor was likely the woman who called the police, possibly killed already. The one at the staircase corner was likely the armed suspect.

Jimmy signaled the city police officers with his flashlight, and then raised his hand pointing to himself, and then gestured toward entering the house. Police hand signs aren't universally recognized, but Jimmy hoped they understood the plan for them to cover him as he entered.

Jimmy holstered his handgun and drew out the M686 from his right leg. He crouched and moved to the front door, using a recently found stick to pry the door open, already damaged by the assailant and merely ajar.

With the mental map still clear, Jimmy peeked slightly from the doorway. The path to the staircase was unobstructed, consistent with his mental map, while the suspect was near the halfway point on the stairs, out of visual range, but Jimmy was certain of his presence there.

Jimmy crouched, then suddenly dashed a step into the living room by the door and quickly ducked behind the sofa. The living room formed a right angle with the staircase, the suspect could see someone had entered but didn't have time to react or shoot.

The suspect hadn't anticipated the police entering the house in such a manner, normally they would've shouted from the entrance. Jimmy's sudden move completely disrupted the suspect's previous plans, forcing him to move slightly downstairs in an attempt to locate the police officer inside.

The suspect slowly moved down, the barrel of his gun following the line of sight along the staircase, cautiously checking the living room area. Reaching a blind spot, he had to expose a bit of his body and head to check the remaining area. With his Heart Eye, Jimmy could see all the suspect's movements and at the moment the suspect's head appeared, Jimmy fired a shot. "Bang"—a single shot, and the suspect fell down the stairs.
