North America Gunman Detective
Chapter 54: 053 Friend
The lawyer and the motorcyclist talked inside for a few minutes before the lawyer came out and called Jimmy in.
"You've discussed everything, haven't you? Then let's start taking notes." Jimmy took out paper and pen, and sat across from them.
"Name, address." "Alexander Djerentyev, Russian American, came from Kansas City."
"Destination? What are you doing here?" "Touring, headed for Florida, Orlando."
"Arkansas is not a freeway or interstate, the speed limit is 45mph, and your motorcycle was going 80mph, which is a serious case of speeding. You will now be issued a speeding ticket that needs to be dealt with within 20 days. If you dispute the ticket, you may initiate a judicial process. Understand?"
Jimmy handed the pre-prepared speeding ticket to the motorcyclist. The motorcyclist glanced at the lawyer, the lawyer nodded in agreement, and then he took it.
Having dealt with the speeding ticket, Jimmy now needed to address the matter of fleeing from the police.
Jimmy took out a map, pointed to the specific arrest location and the chase route on the map, confirmed each detail with him, and signed the report in front of the lawyer.
Then it was no longer Jimmy's concern. The follow-up would be to go through the process at the prosecutor's office, set bail, and if the money is paid, he could be released. If he cannot produce the bail, he would stay in a detention center for a while waiting for a court hearing, but with a lawyer present, he was bound not to end up as a permanent resident of the detention center.
Jimmy escorted Alexander to the detention center for registration, and then went back to continue patrolling.
Around 5 p.m., Jimmy received a phone call.
"Jimmy, it's me, Jacob, are you working?"
"Yeah, I'm patrolling the highway. What's up, Jacob? Is it urgent?"
"Very urgent. Jon's neighbor just called me saying he heard a gunshot from Jon's house. He's already called the police and then informed me. Jon didn't come into the restaurant today."
"Give me the address; I'll go check it out now."
Jimmy noted down Jon's address and instantly sped off towards the city center. As he drove, he called Cage to explain; abandoning his post was a serious issue, and he could only take a leave of absence on the fly to go check things out, as the city center was not under the jurisdiction of the county police.
Since Jimmy was not responding to an emergency call, he did not use his lights and siren, but he still followed the normal traffic rules while racing to the city, albeit speeding significantly.
The county police cars are emblazoned with "SHERIFF," while the city police cars have "POLICE" painted on them. To local Americans, it's easy to distinguish whose jurisdiction a police car belongs to and what area they cover.
Upon entering the city area, Jimmy slowed down; traffic was heavier in the city, and it took him 20 minutes to reach Jon's house.
Jon lived in a middle-class neighborhood where each home was a detached house, typically constructed with hollow bricks on the first floor and wood on the second.
At that moment, there were four police cars parked on the road outside Jon's house, all from the LRPD. Five police officers were scattered to the left and right of Jon's house, all avoiding the position directly in front of the doorway.
When Jimmy's police car arrived, the LRPD officers were surprised as it was unusual for county police to show up at a city case.
A sergeant walked over, and Jimmy got out of the car to shake his hand.
"Brother, what brings you here? This isn't your case."
"Sergeant, the homeowner is my friend. His neighbor called my friend, who then notified me. You're handling it; I'm just here to check things out."
Jimmy looked around at the police setup and continued, "What's the situation now? Is Jon safe? And his family?"
"The situation is unclear at the moment. We're waiting for SWAT. The suspect is armed and has taken the family hostage. It was the neighbor who called the police. The suspect fired shots out the window just now, which is why we took cover here; it's not possible to approach from the front."
"Have any members of the household shown themselves? Are there any confirmed casualties?"
"Everything is unclear right now. We have to wait for the negotiation experts and SWAT backup before we can proceed."
"I understand. Can I go around to the back of the house to have a look?"
"OK, we have two brothers at the back. I'll let them know."
Jimmy went around the back of the neighboring house, where two LRPD officers were on guard behind the house, mainly to warn everyone if the suspect tried to escape through the back door. The main assault direction was still from the front.
Jimmy pressed against the backyard's wooden fence and then peeked over, looking at the back door situation.
The house was over 15 meters wide, clearly a large house, likely with a floor area of over 200 square meters. There were two back doors on the rear wall of the house. From the typical American house layout, the living room and bedrooms would be on the left side, while the right side typically included the kitchen and storage rooms. The left door seen from the back likely led to a utility room or the kitchen, and the right door towards the middle was the back door to the living room or stairs. Next to the left door was a window, approximately 100*70 cm, with a vertical sliding mechanism.
Jimmy's position was a bit far from the house, about 7-8 meters away. He closed his eyes and activated his Heart Eye Ability, only to find that he could see just a little of the house, about 2 meters near the backyard, and he didn't detect any human-shaped shadows.
Jimmy glanced at the two LRPD officers and signaled with his hand that he wanted to go in for a look, but the LRPD personnel immediately stopped him. They weren't willing to take that risk, and clearly, it was against the rules.
With no other option, Jimmy had to explain his relationship with Jon again, earnestly requesting to reconnoiter the situation himself.
One City Policeman stepped back slightly and quietly contacted the sergeant at the front of the house using his radio. Finally, Jimmy was granted permission. He pushed open the wooden gate and approached the house along the right side of the backyard flowerbeds, observing the inside of the house with his Heart Eye while moving closer.
It wasn't until he pressed against the back wall on the right side of the house that he realized it was larger than he had imagined. The Heart Eye was approximately a 10-meter radius circle, meaning the maximum detection distance was about 10 meters, and he hadn't even reached the front door's position yet.
The content he had detected so far included two individuals on the second floor, a large one and a small one, which, judging by their sizes, were likely to be Jon's wife and child. Jon had never brought his family to the restaurant where he used to work, and Jimmy didn't know them or how many children Jon had. For now, he could only see one adult and one child and hadn't found Jon.
He continued to move left, hoping his Heart Eye Ability could scan the entire house.
Sure enough, when he nearly reached the midpoint of the house, he spotted a figure on the left side. By the size of the big belly, it had to be Jon, sitting on the ground without any support or having fallen down, which at least indicated he wasn't dead or seriously injured. From the shadow, his hands appeared to be in front of him and together, possibly bound.
Moving further left, he finally spotted someone moving around. Given the placement seen from the front door direction earlier, this person was likely behind the living room window. Since Jimmy couldn't detect the wall by the front door, he wasn't sure how far the individual was from the window. Jimmy continued to walk to the end of the left side, reaching the left window, and feigned a look outside, not spotting anyone else. From what he could see, there seemed to just be one criminal.
Jimmy returned to the outside of the backyard, along the left wall, and took an LRPD radio to contact the sergeant at the front directly.
