North America Gunman Detective
Chapter 826 - 493: The Case Report Turmoil (Part 2)
Jimmy: "Okay, I'll go back and revise the report. You should rest a bit more."
-----------------
In less than 24 hours, from when Ryan and Derek were shot to finding and killing the shooter, Jimmy's role was undeniable. He's handling the report carefully now because he got quite spooked last time.
The OPR has launched at least two large-scale investigations against Jimmy, and each investigation was a real headache, making everyone in the bureau feel uneasy. It's best not to give them an excuse, and if it doesn't work, he could only rely on personal connections.
Actually, telling the truth isn't impossible; he had official cooperation with the Anti-Terrorism Bureau before. Now, borrowing resources from the Federation for dealing with the thugs who shot the FBI agent might be against the rules, but not unjustifiable.
But saying that would easily piss off Caitlin, helping only to cause trouble and then being harassed is no good at all. The key is that it was merely a favor owed, but if it ends up dragging them down, it becomes a big deal, not something a small task can settle.
Jimmy told Ruiz to rest, he went back to revise the report himself. After more than two hours, he finally got it done, entered the full report on the computer, printed a copy, and headed to Hughes's office.
Jimmy: "Hughes, it's done, here's the report."
Hughes nodded: "Are our people okay?"
Jimmy: "Those at the scene weren't injured, but I haven't seen Ryan yet, I'll head to the hospital later."
Hughes gestured for Jimmy to hand over the report. Hughes glanced over it briefly and nodded: "Was Ruiz involved throughout?"
Jimmy: "Most of it, except for the part at the dock warehouse."
Hughes nodded: "Got it, I'll check it out with him. You should go see Ryan at the hospital, give him my regards."
Jimmy: "Okay, goodbye, Hughes."
-----------------
Jimmy didn't go home to change clothes; he headed straight to the hospital in the same outfit from yesterday.
He wasn't in great shape either; during the gunfight in the warehouse at night, he was down on the ground, though he brushed it off a bit. It wasn't visible at night, but now during the day, passing by a mirror, one could see the dust on the clothes.
The key was, after a hectic night without showering or washing his face, he wasn't looking too good. However, being able to notify Ryan of the results as soon as possible was a consolation.
Outside Ryan's ward, an agent was observing from his seat.
Jimmy: "Is Ryan awake?"
Agent: "He woke up once this morning." While speaking, he stretched out his hand and opened the door for Jimmy.
Jimmy's face was a pass; despite looking a bit disheveled now. Walking into the room, Ryan was indeed awake, but still lying down; he turned his head upon hearing Jimmy's voice.
Jimmy: "Ryan, how are you feeling?"
Ryan: "Doctor said it's not life-threatening, but I guess I'd need one or two months to recuperate. What's wrong with you?"
Jimmy: "Huh? Nothing. Oh, you mean this?" Jimmy gestured on himself, "I rolled around on the ground when doing stuff last night. The two bastards who killed Derek have been taken care of."
Ryan tried to move excitedly, and Jimmy quickly pressed his shoulder down, "Don't move. Careful with the wound."
Ryan: "So fast? Are you sure?"
Jimmy: "Yes, I am sure. One of them I took down, the other was shot by another agent."
Ryan: "Thank you, Jimmy, thank you."
Jimmy: "You're welcome, I hurried over after finishing the report to tell you the good news. Rest up and recover now."
Ryan: "Have Derek's family been informed?"
Jimmy shook his head: "I don't know. I was handling the case yesterday, didn't follow up."
Ryan: "Give Hughes a call, I want to ask."
Jimmy nodded, took out his phone and dialed Hughes: "Hughes, Ryan wants to talk to you." After Hughes replied, Jimmy held the phone up to Ryan's ear.
Since Ryan got shot in the chest, to avoid pulling on his arm muscles, Jimmy held the phone for him.
Ryan: "Hughes... yes, I understand... has Derek's death been informed?... Okay, thank you."
Ryan nodded at Jimmy, who put his phone back in his pocket, "Alright, it's taken care of, I'll go get some rest, been up all night. Take care. Goodbye."
Ryan: "Goodbye."
Tears shimmered in Ryan's eyes. He adjusted his gaze upward to the ceiling. Jimmy nodded, turned, and left the room, "Brother, keep an eye on Ryan, call me if anything comes up."
The agent at the door nodded: "No worries, we're all on the same side, I will."
Jimmy left the hospital to get some rest, unlike the others who weren't so lucky; it was a busy case.
Emma conducted a sweep on a warehouse, and out of the three rooms Jimmy's team raided, two were theirs; the other room belonged to regular occupants. After verifying their identities and confirming there were no issues, the FBI apologized and sent them back.
This was collateral damage. Due to a shootout at the scene, those two rooms are now sealed off, awaiting forensic examination.
Apart from those who were caught, there's still a major issue. The dock raided last night is a private dock, whose warehouse is suspected of being used for smuggling. The dock manager couldn't escape responsibility and must be summoned for questioning.
People with private docks are not easy to deal with; Emma's team was super busy. But these were trivial compared to the bounty of their operation.
Due to the FBI's report, despite some incident from the Coast Guard's side, a ship and its cargo were seized in totality. Comparing the fingerprint info from the ship with those captured by the FBI, it mostly matched, benefiting many parties. The biggest prize for them was the ship. Upon verification, the ship was a "scrapped" one, its hull number and name were stolen from another ship, marking it as a professional smuggling ship, a significant achievement indeed.
The case was too big and alerted the OPR and the Federation Prosecutor. While Jimmy slept at home, Ruiz and Senior Agent Lauren Taylor from the Field Office were notified to participate in the case meeting. Since Jimmy had already submitted the report to Hughes, they were just waiting for reports from others. Of course, aside from Emma's smuggling case, which will take a while to close, this mainly targeted the shooting case of Ryan and Derek.
The Homicide Team's current leader, Mahong, was temporarily transferred. Jimmy served as acting leader, so him submitting the report directly to Hughes was the normal procedure. No one would question it, and his attitude was really good, reporting the morning after a midnight gunfight, faster than anyone else.
The Federation Prosecutor's office had already spread the word about investigating this shooting case, so the worst-case scenario expected by Jimmy and Ruiz came true. The only uncertainty was whether they would grasp onto some loopholes.
This was a revenge for a colleague, although it couldn't be written in the report, everyone was aware of it. Those two gunmen had no chance of being caught alive by Jimmy, so now there's a sense of unease about what might happen next.
Upon waking up, Jimmy saw a text from Ruiz. He wasn't too concerned; it was all within their expectations. Checking the time, it was already dusk. After calling Nia to arrange dinner for the evening, he got up to freshen up. Meeting Nia had been planned before, but he had to bail due to the case.
After a whole afternoon's sleep, Jimmy was in good spirits, with no worries in his mind. He had dinner with Nia, and they went to see a movie to pass the time.
The next morning, while making breakfast, Jimmy's phone rang. He wiped his hands and answered, "What happened, Ruiz?"
Ruiz: "Someone we brought in yesterday committed suicide in the detention center."
Jimmy: "FXXK! Suicide? How is that possible? Was it Genovese's people?"
Ruiz: "Not sure. Emma called me this morning. They've sent people to investigate, but this isn't over."
Jimmy: "You ask around first; I'll head to the office later. This bad luck just doesn't end, does it?"
