CHAPTER 83: CHAPTER 83: THE STRONGEST LOGIA, THE UNSOLVABLE RUMBLE-RUMBLE FRUIT

On the vast, boundless sea.

Ten warships were spread out in a fan formation. With three masts and over a dozen main and secondary sails, they sailed across the sea at an extremely high speed.

"Ara, ara..."

Aokiji, who had been sleeping on a beach chair, planning to rest for a few days before battling that formidable young Dragon Knight, suddenly removed the eye mask from his face and opened one eye to look at the azure sky.

Like him, a large number of Marines possessed Observation Haki.

In the clear blue sky, a dazzling blue-white light was condensing out of thin air.

"All troops, attention! The enemy’s attack is coming."

"The opponent is a user of the Logia-type Rumble-Rumble Fruit! Activate the lightning rod devices immediately!"

"..."

The difference between pirates and the Marines was instantly apparent.

Staring at the blue-white light gathering in the sky, the Marines on the warships within the attack range showed no signs of panic.

Under the command of their officers, some Marine soldiers in the control rooms immediately activated the enhanced lightning rod devices.

The Grand Line is a sea where magnetic fields and climates are in chaos. Both pirate ships and warships frequently encounter storms or thunderstorms, all sorts of harsh weather.

Compared to the technologically inferior pirate ships, the superior warships were all equipped with lightning rod devices to prevent lightning from accidentally striking the ship or its soldiers.

But a short while ago, the lightning rod devices on a new batch of Marine warships had been significantly reinforced.

This was because the Rumble-Rumble Fruit, a Logia-type that had disappeared for several eras and gradually faded into legend, had reappeared on this sea.

And that Logia user was an enemy of Mary Geoise and the Marines.

Taking precautions, Mary Geoise and Marine Headquarters immediately ordered the reinforcement of the lightning rod devices.

Evidently, their decision was the right one.

A batch of large warships now possessed these enhanced lightning rods.

RUMBLE...

Amidst a deafening roar of thunder, a colossal pillar of lightning struck down towards Aokiji’s warship.

"Moonwalk!"

Without Aokiji needing to act, a Marine who wasn’t even a Headquarters Vice Admiral shot into the sky using Moonwalk.

He then drew the twin swords from his waist, coated them with a layer of pitch-black substance, and swung two massive slashes at the descending lightning pillar, which collided with it in a cross shape.

CRACK!

But clearly, this Marine had overestimated himself.

The lightning pillar only held against the cross-slash for a few seconds before shattering it.

As the Marine stared with wide eyes, the lightning pillar was about to engulf him in the next second.

SWOOSH—BOOM!

At that moment, an afterimage shot into the sky.

A single sword, not coated in Armament Haki, yet it seemed capable of cutting through anything.

With just one upward slash, it sliced the lightning pillar, which had only lost a little of its power, in two.

Once severed, the concentrated lightning pillar immediately dispersed into an endless current, which was absorbed by the activated lightning rod devices, giving it no chance to engulf the warship below and inflict mass damage on the weaker Marines.

"Vice Admiral Momonga!"

The Marine whose life had just been saved looked at the tall figure before him with an expression of pure adoration.

The one who had cut the lightning pillar was none other than one of the five accompanying Headquarters Vice Admirals, Momonga, the same man who was almost instantly defeated by Boa Hancock’s Love-Love Fruit in the original story.

"Don’t let your guard down. The enemy is here."

Momonga, having landed, did not sheathe his longsword. Instead, he coated the blade with a layer of pitch-black substance and, along with his colleagues and even Aokiji, looked towards the starboard side of the warship.

FLASH!

A bolt of lightning descended from the sky, landing on the ship’s railing.

The lightning didn’t destroy the railing; it transformed from a fluid state into a young man clad in knight’s armor.

"As expected of a Headquarters Vice Admiral. A fine steel-cutting slash," Karl complimented Vice Admiral Momonga as soon as he appeared.

"Attack!"

However, Vice Admiral Momonga and the others had no intention of exchanging pleasantries with Karl.

Following the order of a Headquarters Vice Admiral acting as deputy commander, nearly a thousand Marine soldiers on the ship quickly formed various formations.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

A series of cannon shots rang out.

A line of Marine soldiers, shouldering cannons, fired non-explosive cannonballs at Karl—large nets made of Seastone.

But without a doubt, all these nets missed their mark.

They didn’t even get close to Karl.

Karl’s figure vanished from the railing.

"Discharge."

The next second, Karl appeared amidst the crowd of Marine soldiers, his entire body flashing with brilliant lightning.

Countless blue-white electric snakes spread out from his body.

"ARGHHHH..."

Facing this legendary ability for the first time, it was clear that everyone, from the Marine soldiers to the Headquarters Vice Admirals and Aokiji, was caught off guard by the Rumble-Rumble Fruit’s teleportation, which was even more formidable than the Glint-Glint Fruit’s, ignoring all obstacles.

The endless electric snakes instantly turned the warship’s deck into a sea of lightning.

Even with the enhanced lightning rod devices installed on the ship, the Marine soldiers were electrocuted, convulsing all over. Their eyes rolled back as they fell to the ground, white smoke puffing from their mouths.

In a single instant, hundreds of Marine soldiers lost their ability to fight.

Only the Devil Fruit users and the powerful Marines who had mastered Haki were able to ignore Karl’s mass-damage attack, Discharge.

"The Rumble-Rumble Fruit... what an overwhelmingly powerful ability!"

Watching Karl take out hundreds of Marines without even moving his hands, the powerful Marines who had used Haki to resist the lightning all had looks of horror in their eyes.

SWISH—!

The next second, a blade of light slashed towards Karl.

It was Vice Admiral Momonga again.

He was the first to react, wielding his Armament Haki-clad longsword and cleaving at Karl’s head with incredible speed.

"Sorry, but I’m not here to fight you."

Relying on his unparalleled perception, Karl easily dodged Vice Admiral Momonga’s close-range slash.

Expanding his electric field, he teleported to the center of the warship’s deck.

Just as Karl lifted his right foot, about to stomp down and destroy the large warship...

"Ara, ara... I can’t let you destroy my ship."

Aokiji, understanding Karl’s surprise attack, finally stopped spectating.

SWOOSH—

A few chunks of ice, radiating cold air, fell from the beach chair where he had been lying.

Aokiji’s figure appeared before Karl, bringing with him a gust of cold air.

His hand, transformed into ice, reached for Karl’s descending right foot, carrying a low temperature capable of freezing anything.

"I knew it wouldn’t be that easy."

Karl, his charged-up attack interrupted, showed no surprise.

Golden, flowing Haki covered his right foot. Karl changed his stomp into a whip kick, aimed at Aokiji.

Seeing the Armament Haki, which was at least at the emission level, Aokiji’s pupils contracted slightly, and his body subconsciously turned into its elemental form ahead of time.

CRACK—SWOOSH!

After shattering Aokiji’s pre-emptively elementalized body with a kick, Karl did not press his advantage, instead transforming into a bolt of lightning and disappearing.

Karl knew full well that a battle with any of the three Marine Admirals would not be decided in a short time.

His purpose on this trip was never to fight, but to harass the Marines and prevent the Buster Call from successfully reaching the sea area where Gran Tesoro was located, buying Nami time to take control of the Golden City.

Therefore, from the very beginning, Karl’s targets were not the Marine soldiers and officers, but the warships themselves.

A large warship was no different from a moving mountain. Even with Karl’s monstrous strength, he would need to charge up his power to guarantee its destruction with a single kick.

With the enhanced lightning rod devices and the powerful Marines on board, trying to use lightning pillars for ultra-long-range attacks would be a waste of effort.

Thus...

Karl’s target immediately shifted from destroying the warships to something else.

The Rumble-Rumble Fruit’s electric field was a domain similar to the Ope-Ope Fruit’s "ROOM."

Within this electric field, Karl could transform into an electric current and teleport, ignoring all obstacles.

Although it wasn’t spatial movement, the speed of lightning was comparable to it.

However, because this ultra-high-speed movement was achieved by turning into an electric current and not true spatial movement, Karl’s teleportation was not impossible to counter.

At least to the perception of someone with decent proficiency in Observation Haki, Karl’s movements left a trace and could be seen.

It was just that their body’s reaction time and speed couldn’t keep up with the speed of lightning, so even if they could see it, they couldn’t interrupt his teleportation.

This was unlike Kizaru’s long-distance teleportation, which had a wind-up animation and could be interrupted if one was wrapped in Haki.

But if someone could keep up with Karl’s movement speed, they could also interrupt his teleportation, intercepting his body as he attempted to move at ultra-high speed to another location.

For example, during the battle at the Sabaody Archipelago, Karl and Kizaru had interrupted each other’s teleportation multiple times.

This was also the reason why Kizaru said, "Although I can’t defeat you, I can certainly stop you from leaving."

Back to the matter at hand...

Transforming into an electric current, Karl appeared on the warship’s main mast. Lightning flashed from his right wrist.

"God’s Judgment!"

A lightning pillar containing immense electrical heat instantly blasted the main mast apart, igniting the wood and the main sail.

"Not good! His goal is to destroy the warships! Stop him, quickly!"

Seeing this, the Marine officers knew exactly what Karl’s objective was.

Giving Karl no chance to destroy the secondary masts, the five Headquarters Vice Admirals all used Shave to appear in the air, attacking him.

But obviously...

Karl, who was not engaging in a direct confrontation, simply teleported, causing all their attacks to miss.

Although Karl’s teleportation could be stopped, not everyone was capable of doing so.

Especially the Headquarters Vice Admirals, who were separated from the top-tier fighters by an entire Warlord of the Sea in terms of power. Besides a monster like Garp and a special ability user like Tsuru, these Vice Admirals, who seemed incredibly powerful to others, were fragile in the eyes of the truly elite.

"Ice Block: Pheasant Beak!"

Aokiji was also unable to stop Karl’s teleportation.

But his Observation Haki could predict Karl’s destination.

Just as Karl teleported above a secondary mast, preparing to destroy it and its sail as he had before, a giant ice bird flew down from above. The bird, which froze even the air around it into cold mist, collided with Karl.

Karl, who was about to use God’s Judgment, paused his action slightly and elementalized ahead of time, allowing the ice bird to carry his elemental form some distance away.

He then teleported back to his original position, intending to use God’s Judgment once more to destroy the secondary mast.

But in the next second, a tall figure radiating cold air appeared out of thin air before him.

Aokiji had used an ice-infused Shave to appear in front of Karl. Wielding an ice sword wrapped in flowing Haki, he swung at Karl.

It seemed like an ordinary slash, but if it landed, not only would the body be torn apart by Haki, but even the blood would be frozen, a truly fatal injury.

BOOM—!

Seeing that Aokiji was starting to keep up with his rhythm, Karl realized he could no longer take advantage of their lack of intel on the Rumble-Rumble Fruit to destroy the warships. He clenched his five fingers into a fist, wrapped it in golden, flowing Haki, and clashed with Aokiji’s swinging ice sword.

An invisible shockwave erupted from their fist and ice sword, forming a ring of Haki that slammed into both their bodies.

CRACKLE...

The sound of ice shattering came from Aokiji’s body.

Karl’s body also turned into blue-white electricity. Both of them had elementalized in advance to avoid the Haki shockwave, and they were both sent flying from above the warship as if hit by a gale.

RUMBLE...

Taking this opportunity, Karl abandoned the main ship and used his teleportation to appear on another warship.

Amidst a deafening roar of thunder, Karl didn’t take the chance to charge up and destroy the warship. Before Aokiji could catch up using Shave, he used God’s Judgment to destroy that warship’s main and secondary masts.

By the time Aokiji caught up, Karl was already on another warship.

But this time, Karl’s attempt to destroy the main and secondary masts was once again interrupted by Aokiji.

BOOM—!

Just like before, Karl did not evade, confronting Aokiji head-on.

The clash of their emission-level Haki once again turned into a powerful shockwave, sending nearby Marine soldiers, and even themselves, flying.

After the clash, Karl again took advantage of Aokiji’s momentary stun to release a lightning pillar and destroy the masts and sails.

You chase, I run. You fight, I fight. After the fight, I keep running...

Next, Karl employed this extremely cheap yet unsolvable tactic. The Marine officers and soldiers, whose speed couldn’t keep up or who couldn’t get involved, finally understood why the Rumble-Rumble Fruit was called the strongest of the Logia-type.

At the same time, they experienced for the first time the feeling that pirates had when facing Kizaru.

A kind of helplessness, where they could only watch as the opponent destroyed the main and secondary masts, gradually bringing the ten warships to a halt.

Nearly an hour later.

Karl, having clashed with Aokiji dozens of times and finally succeeding in destroying the main and secondary masts of all ten warships despite the interference, appeared high in the sky the next second. He looked down at Aokiji below and said, "Go back. Besides that old man, neither you nor the Akainu I have yet to meet can stop me."

"Ara, ara... it does seem that way."

Aokiji, who had tried his best to stop Karl, looked at the warships with all their masts broken and scratched his head helplessly. "The Rumble-Rumble Fruit, huh? What an unsolvable ability."

Despite his interference, Karl had still managed to disable the ships.

But since only the masts were lost, Aokiji didn’t feel angry.

After giving Aokiji a deep look, Karl’s figure vanished from the sky.

But Karl hadn’t truly left. High above the sea, beyond Aokiji’s perception, he sat on a cloud made from a Cloud Dial, continuing to monitor Aokiji.

Since the momentous Buster Call had been announced to the world, Mary Geoise and Marine Headquarters could not possibly call it off halfway for the sake of their dignity.

Therefore, even with all the masts broken and the sails burned, Karl didn’t believe the Buster Call would be terminated.

This battle of attrition had only just begun.
