CHAPTER 44: CHAPTER 44: THE MAN IN THE WINDOW

Recap – Chapter 43: The Lie That Started It All

Everything began to fall apart the moment Aaron read the second letter.

Hidden for years, written by his biological mother, and addressed to his father James, the letter revealed what no one had dared say aloud — that Elena had known the truth about Grayson all along. That she had kept it buried. That her presence in the Voss home might never have been an accident, but a calculated move to protect herself... or to manipulate everyone inside.

For Aaron, the betrayal is more than personal — it rewrites everything he believed about the woman he was falling for. For Milo, it reopens old wounds, placing him back in the middle of a family web built on lies.

And then... the shadow in the yard. The fresh footprints. The voice in the dark whispering, "Looking for me?"

That’s when they realize: Grayson isn’t gone. He’s watching. Waiting. Closer than ever.

Chapter 43 was the unraveling of the lie that started it all. Now, in Chapter 44: The Man in the Window, the consequences of that lie come crashing through the glass — and no one inside the house is safe.

📖 Main Story

The envelope was cream-colored and weathered, taped neatly to the back of the tool shed.

Aaron spotted it just as dawn began to spill across the yard, casting long shadows and gold-tinged light. It hadn’t been there the night before. Of that, he was sure.

"Is that addressed to us?" Milo asked, coming up behind him, his voice hoarse from sleep and worry.

Aaron pulled it free. The tape peeled with a soft rip.

"No," Aaron said quietly. "It’s addressed to Elena."

He flipped the envelope over and slid the photo out.

Milo leaned in.

The image was low-res, grainy. But unmistakable.

Elena. In a hallway. Kissing a man.

Not James.

But it wasn’t just the kiss that froze Aaron’s blood — it was the background. The hallway was in the old Voss vacation home... the one that had been sold off after their mom’s disappearance. No one was supposed to have access to it.

The timestamp?

Two weeks ago.

"This was recent," Milo breathed. "You don’t think..."

"That’s Grayson," Aaron finished. "It has to be."

His fingers tightened around the photo. "Which means he’s not just alive. He’s here. Playing with us."

Milo took a step back, gaze flicking around the yard like Grayson might be watching right then.

Aaron noticed. "You felt it, too. Like someone’s been here before?"

Milo nodded slowly. "I didn’t want to say anything... but yeah. Like we’ve been watched since we came back."

Across town...

Elena woke to the sound of glass breaking.

Her breath hitched. She grabbed the fireplace poker and crept down the hallway, heart pounding in her ears. The living room window was intact... but the back door was cracked open. She hadn’t left it that way.

Then she saw it.

A glass paperweight on the floor — shattered.

And beside it, another envelope.

She didn’t need to open it to know who it was from.

"Grayson," she whispered, her voice breaking. "You promised you’d stay gone."

She read the note inside.

"Nice house. Shame if the truth burned it down.

See you soon, darling. X."

She dropped the note and slumped against the kitchen counter. The past wasn’t creeping back.

It had walked straight through her door.

Aaron couldn’t sit still. He was pacing the living room, while Milo sat slumped on the couch, holding the photo like it might disappear if he blinked.

"We have to talk to her," Milo said finally. "She’s the only one who knows what really happened."

Aaron shook his head. "And she’s the only one who’s lied about it for years."

"But if Grayson’s back..."

Aaron stopped pacing. "Then she’s not just part of the problem. She might be the next target."

Milo stood, leveling his gaze. "We need her alive, Aaron. Whether you trust her or not."

Aaron’s jaw clenched.

He remembered the way Elena touched his cheek. The way she whispered his name like a secret. The way she said she didn’t love James anymore. The way she swore she never meant to love him.

But if she had kept Grayson a secret — even now...

"She has one chance to be honest," Aaron said. "Just one."

That night...

The Voss house sat quiet, lit only by the flicker of a TV Milo had left on for noise. Outside, the wind howled against the windows. Rain tapped softly at the glass.

Aaron stared at the photo again.

"She looks... scared," he muttered.

Milo looked up. "What?"

"In the picture. Elena. She’s not just kissing him. Look at her eyes."

Milo leaned closer, squinting. "You’re right. That’s not passion. That’s panic."

Suddenly, they heard it.

A creak upstairs.

Both of them froze.

Aaron grabbed the poker from the fireplace. Milo followed him silently, stepping over the floorboards with care.

They reached the upstairs hallway.

Nothing.

Until—

A shadow moved behind the window.

They turned.

Outside, barely visible through the rain-streaked glass, stood a man.

Not moving. Just watching.

The light from the hallway glinted off his eyes — cold, patient.

Aaron bolted toward the front door, Milo right behind him.

But by the time they got outside, the figure was gone.

Only wet footprints remained on the porch.

Leading to the woods.

Back inside, drenched and shaken, they called Elena.

She answered on the first ring.

"You saw him, didn’t you?" she said before either could speak.

"You knew he’d come here," Aaron snapped.

Elena was quiet for a long moment.

"I saw him tonight too," she said softly. "He was in my house."

"Then why aren’t you running?"

"Because I’m done running," she replied. "It’s time you both heard everything. Come over. Now."

Later, in Elena’s kitchen...

The walls looked smaller than Aaron remembered. Or maybe it was the weight of what was happening that made everything feel so tight — like a trap closing in.

Elena poured coffee with trembling hands.

Aaron stared at her.

"Start from the beginning."

She looked at both of them. "I met Grayson when I was nineteen. He was charming. Older. Dangerous. I thought I was in love. I was wrong."

She sipped the coffee, eyes distant.

"He used me. For everything. He blackmailed politicians, laundered money, ruined lives. And I was the face people trusted — the one who distracted the targets. When I got pregnant, I thought it would change things. It didn’t. It made him crueler."

Aaron’s breath caught. "Pregnant?"

She nodded. "With your sister."

Milo blinked. "What?"

"Elara," she whispered. "I gave her up for adoption when Grayson started using her to manipulate me. I thought I could save her from him. That’s when I ran... and that’s when I found James."

She looked at Aaron, tears in her eyes. "I loved your father. I did. But I never stopped being afraid. And when I fell for you, Aaron, it wasn’t about the past. It was the first time I ever felt... free."

Aaron couldn’t speak.

Milo leaned forward. "What does Grayson want now?"

"Me," she said. "And probably all of you, if you’re in the way."

She reached into a drawer and pulled out a small silver key.

"This leads to a place he never found. A safehouse. It’s the only place we’ll be safe long enough to figure out what he’s planning."

Aaron took the key slowly.

Milo looked between them.

"Then let’s not waste time."

🔮 Preview – Chapter 45: Ghosts of the Safehouse

Elena’s confession cracked open a history far darker than Aaron or Milo ever imagined — one built on manipulation, blackmail, and a child given up to protect her from a monster. Now, with the safehouse key in their hands, the three of them must disappear before Grayson tightens the noose completely.

But the past doesn’t stay buried in the safehouse either.

Old photos. Burned files. A half-written letter from James Voss — all waiting to be discovered in the dark corners of a place meant to protect. And as the storm rages outside, so does the storm within.

Aaron is haunted by his feelings for Elena — complicated now by the truth of her lies and the danger she’s brought into all their lives. Milo is beginning to see just how deep the rot goes, and that his hatred for Aaron may be rooted in a story he never fully understood.

And Elena? She’s unraveling.

In Chapter 45, the line between family, love, and survival blurs even further. Trust is fragile. Secrets still lurk in the shadows. And Grayson?

He’s not done playing yet.
