Path to Becoming the Greatest Space Mercenary
Chapter 303 303
Jasmine and Olivia quickly pulled identical masks out of pouches on their belts and placed them over their faces.
Since there was no telling what sort of situations they would find themselves in, they had prepared all sorts of equipment that might prove useful.
The masks they were using now were meant to filter out harmful substances in the air but also had their own supply of oxygen for up to twenty minutes.
Seeing as how neither of them recognized the gas the man who had laid a trap for them had just released, they opted to use the internal air supply.
Even if it was not a guarantee, the slight possibility that the filter would not work on this substance was something they could not risk.
"Are you okay, Olivia?"
"Yeah, I didn't breathe any in. And it seems that this isn't the type of gas that can go through skin. We would have been in trouble if that were the case." Olivia replied.
Though they had found themselves in quite the predicament, all hope was not lost yet. And while the gases may have presented an unknown threat to them, it was not entirely bad.
The man that was wearing light power armor with active camouflage had already disappeared again, but any movement he made disturbed the pink gas that had filled the room.
He may not have become visible, but he could not as easily hide himself anymore.
Following the traces in the gas, Jasmine aimed her laser pistol and fired.
Except, the light diffused as it came in contact with the pink gas.
It seemed that it served more than one purpose and was also capable of lowering the effectiveness of laser weaponry.
Their enemy approached in Jasmine's moment of confusion. Without her weapon, she was of little threat.
However, Olivia's hard light weapon still worked perfectly fine, and she stepped in to intercept. Sweeping her spear in a wide arc and forcing the man to back off.
"Maybe it's about time I get myself one of those." Jasmine said, glancing at Olivia's spear.
"That might be a good idea, but they're not easy to use. It takes a long time to become proficient with them."
"Well, you'll just have to give me some pointers when we get out of here."
Standing back-to-back, the two of them kept an eye out for the person hunting them.
Considering that he used armor that essentially made him invisible, and he wanted to incapacitate them with gas, he was obviously the cautious type.
Had he just tried attacking them outright, he might have been able to beat them already. Though the chances that he would have ended up the one losing would have been higher as well.
With no more attacks coming their way at the moment, Jasmine and Olivia backed up while remaining cautious.
Escape was still their main objective since there was no telling what else might await them in this place.
Of course, the one that had set up this trap was not going to let them go so easily.
When it became apparent that they still planned to cut there way out through a wall, the camouflaged man was forced to act.
Already having prepared for the gas he was using, he pulled out an electromagnetic weapon. While lasers may not have been effective, kinetic weaponry still was.
Yet even though he fired a supersonic projectile from his gun, Olivia moved to intercept it and deflected it with her hard light spear.
"That projectile might as well not even be moving compared to how fast a laser goes." Olivia said, wearing a smirk on her face.
The man attempted to back up a bit and take a shot at Jasmine instead, but to his surprise, she was no longer anywhere near where she had been just a moment ago.
With speed far greater than she had shown up to this point, she had rushed up to the side of him and jammed her laser pistol against his armor.
"The gas shouldn't have much of an effect at this range."
Pulling the trigger, there was a bright flash of red light, and it looked like the man had been blown away.
What he had really done was leap away at the last moment, but there was now a large hole in his armor and the active camouflage function was no longer capable of activating.
"Now that there's no more disappearing act."
Olivia charged in with her spear and began jabbing with a barrage of thrusts.
A visible enemy was a lot easier to deal with and she was now the one hunting the man that had lured them into this trap.
As Olivia continued to press their adversary, Jasmine headed towards the room's actual entrance.
This area was still disadvantageous for them because of the gas. If they could get out of here, their laser guns would become useful again and they would not need to worry about the possibility of breathing in any of the poison.
But before Jasmine had finished disabling the lock, the door suddenly slid open.
On the other side was a mountain of a man bigger than even Ezra.
He was definitely a bahnen, the same race as Ezra, but he stood another half meter higher and was so large that he would barely be able to squeeze through the door.
In a flash, the new enemy swung what looked like a giant club at Jasmine.
She had been surprised and the attack was coming in too fast for her to dodge.
Bending her body backwards and crossing her arms in front of her chest, she absorbed the blow as best as she could.
Still, the force of the impact sent her flying like she had just been shot out of a cannon.
A heavy rumbling like thunder echoed out when she crashed into the wall on the other side of the room.
"Jasmine!" Olivia called out in a panic.
Disengaging from the man she was fighting, she rushed over to the side of her companion.
When she arrived, she noticed that one of Jasmine's arms was bent at an impossible angle and was so bruised it looked like she had a large patch of purple skin.
There was also some blood flowing down the back of her head from crashing into the wall with such force.
"Vandalen, I'm disappointed in you. How could you be having so much trouble with just a couple of little girls." The giant bahnen said as he pushed his way into the room.
"I'm sorry sir. They proved more resistant and craftier than I was expecting." The armored man, Vandalen said with his head lowered in deference.
Watching this interaction, Olivia was able to piece together that this newcomer was probably the one in charge here. Most likely he had only gotten involved because his subordinate was proving unable to get the job done.
"F*ck that hurt."
Olivia glanced back in surprise as Jasmine pulled herself up.
She had been unconscious just a moment before, but even after taking such a heavy hit, she was already regaining consciousness.
A grim determination on her face, she grabbed her twisted arm and forced it back into place.
Then without any hesitation, she swallowed a handful of medical nanomachine pills.
At a visible rate, the injuries that she had incurred began to heal.
"Olivia, do you mind take on that brute. I don't think I have much of chance against him in close combat. I'll handle the other one" Jasmine said.
A single glance into her eyes, and Olivia could tell that she was furious. Not only because of the immense pain that she had just endured, but because she knew that she was still weak. Though her body had been enhanced, she was no more skill than she had been before.
Nodding her head, Olivia turned and faced the bahnen who was leisurely waiting with his giant club resting on his shoulder.
Had he wanted to, he could have already attacked them, but it seemed that he already thought that victory was guaranteed.
There was amusement in his eyes as if he found the current situation entertaining.
"Hm, I suppose that you two are better than I thought. Perhaps I'll have you work for me once I've crushed you."
"That's not happening. I'd rather bite my own tongue off and die." Olivia spat in response.
This only seemed to amuse the man further.
'He's bigger than Ezra, and probably stronger too. I can't afford to get hit even once.'
Fortunately, Olivia knew how to deal with this type of opponent.
Pushing herself to her limits, she dashed off to engage with the giant bahnen.
At the same time, Jasmine headed over to fight the man in light power armor.
"You're tenacious, but with the hit you just take, you aren't a threat at all." Vandalen said mockingly.
Unlike before, he approached Jasmine without any caution or hesitation. Already believing that his victory over her was assured.
Yet, when he reached out to grab ahold of her, she expertly knocked his hand away and delivered a kick to his side with enough force to leave a dent in his armor.
