Prosperous Marriage: Married to My Brother-in-law
Chapter 140 - 140_1
As it turns out, Orlando Evans was quite the tragic figure.
"Investigate, investigate... Investigate what?! Stop bringing it up. If you actually get investigated one day, just be prepared to spend the rest of your life in prison," Rylee Evans glared at his wife, clearly displeased.
Mrs. Evans immediately fell silent, as chill as a cicada in winter.
After pondering for a long while, Rylee Evans finally suppressed his irritation. He soothed Orlando in a gentle voice, and then the three of them spent the dark night conspiring their dirty schemes, preparing to strike at Adele Horne.
「The next day.」
「Switzerland.」
Early in the morning, Julia Bluen got up and sat on the bed with her laptop. She worked quietly, organizing photos stored on the computer—pictures taken since the start of her honeymoon with Glades Horne.
Next to her, it seemed Glades had not yet awakened.
Seeing his eyes closed, Julia assumed he was still asleep.
There were only six more days until her and Glades's honeymoon would end.
A month has gone by so fast, she mused. Perhaps it's because I've been so happy that time seems to pass in the blink of an eye.
Looking at the photos on the computer, a faint smile touched her lips.
Glades's consideration, his tenderness reserved only for her, his pampering, and his indulgence—all of it filled her heart with sweetness. Even if she occasionally still received harassing calls from Nicholas Coldwell, they were all overshadowed by her happiness.
Throughout the honeymoon, her heart had begun to fall for Glades. They had known each other since childhood, understood each other completely, and Glades had always treated her well. She felt lucky, very lucky.
After organizing the photos, she logged onto her Twitter account. As soon as she did, Rachel Bailey's avatar started flashing non-stop. Upon checking, she found that Rachel had left her nearly a hundred messages, all asking if she was happy. Rachel also shared her own recent news and mentioned Hansen Ruiz.
Seeing Hansen Ruiz's name appear in Rachel's world caused Julia's mood to dip slightly, but there were some things she could not stop. Like love. If Rachel truly fell for Hansen, even if Julia spent every day reminding her, Rachel would still fall in love.
Whatever will be, will be, she thought.
Suddenly, the system notified her of a new friend request; an notification icon kept flashing.
Julia clicked on it casually, and the information that popped up showed that the person adding her was her brother-in-law, James Horne.
James Horne's online name: Lone Eagle.
He probably worried that Julia wouldn't want to add him, so he made a special note that he was James Horne.
Julia accepted his request.
Regardless of their past interactions, or how coldly he had once questioned her—leaving her puzzled—she was now his elder sister-in-law. She couldn't, and shouldn't, carelessly refuse his friend request.
How did he know my Twitter handle? she wondered. And is he up and online this early? Isn't he supposed to be very busy with work?
She thought, Someone as busy as him probably wouldn't even use Twitter.
"Are you enjoying your honeymoon? Is my brother treating you well?" James messaged her first.
Julia furrowed her brows. His message seemed to carry a hint of concern for her. Yet, he had always been silent and reticent, usually wearing a cold, somewhat sinister expression, and had never spoken a word of concern to her before. Why the sudden concern now?
Her fingers flew across the keyboard as she replied, "We're both very happy. Your brother treats me excellently!"
There was a brief silence from James.
Julia thought he was about to log off, but then he sent another message: "Is my brother awake yet? You guys will be back soon, right? Remember to bring us some gifts!"
Then he sent a big smiling face.
Julia couldn't help but smile. James rarely smiled, and even when he did, it was very faint. Sending a big smiley face now... it really doesn't match his actual personality, she thought.
"Your brother is still sleeping. In six days, we'll fly back from Switzerland. Don't worry, you'll get your gifts. What do you want? Should we pack up a beautiful, hot foreign girl and bring her back for you?" Julia added a smiling face emoji at the end too.
James quickly sent over a sweating emoji.
"Grandma is pushing me to get married, too."
"But sadly, I don't have anyone in mind to marry."
James sent the messages quickly.
Julia smiled, thinking that James seemed more talkative online.
"Is everyone at home doing well? Is Grandma's health okay? Are Mom and Dad fine?" Julia changed the subject to inquire about other matters.
"All good!"
"Oh." Julia found herself out of topics.
Suddenly, a familiar pair of domineering and strong hands wrapped around her waist from behind.
"Who are you chatting with?" Glades sat up and naturally embraced her.
His sharp and profound eyes quickly scanned the computer screen.
"It's James," Julia replied honestly.
Glades pursed his lips, his eyes, black as pearls, blinking rapidly. A hint of coldness flashed through their depths but was gone in an instant.
"How did he get your Twitter handle?" Glades caressed Julia's short hair tenderly, his tone casual as if making small talk.
"I don't know. He just added me," Julia turned to look at him, smiling. "Why? What is it?"
"What 'what is it'?" Glades, blinking his deep eyes, asked in return, an almost imperceptible smile on his lips, though the mirth did not reach their depths. "Why don't you sleep a little longer?" He quickly changed the subject.
James was his brother, and there were some things he did not voice, but that did not mean he was unaware.
"I woke up and didn't feel like sleeping anymore. I just got up to organize some photos." Julia sent a goodbye emoji to James, logged off Twitter, and shut down the computer. She then turned and leaned into Glades's embrace, saying with a touch of longing, "We'll be going back soon."
The end of the honeymoon also means I'll have to formally face the multitude of people in the Horne family.
My status as the young mistress of the Horne family is about to be as solid as a rock. Oh, no, not yet. I still have to tame my overbearing younger sister-in-law and win over my mother-in-law, who has reservations about me because of her sister. I also need to manage the assets assigned to my name and defeat all the women still trying to climb into Glades's bed. Only then will my position as young mistress truly be secure.
