CHAPTER 139: CHAPTER 11: THE DRAMA QUEEN SISTER REFUSES TO BE CANNON FODDER (PART 11)
The guy in the white coat looked at Jiang Lai with a complicated expression.
"Are you completely unable to control your own hands?"
Jiang Lai grabbed his clothes and started running outside, and then saw a little girl holding a doll halfway, just about to go over when Gu Han Yan ran over and intercepted her.
In the chaos, Jiang Lai couldn’t care about much else. He originally thought the person in his hand was troublesome and wanted to just let go, but as soon as he released his grip, he heard Little Buding scream in his ear.
"Hold on tight!! This guy is the savior!!"
Upon hearing this, Jiang Lai instinctively tightened his grip on the man’s clothes, pulling him while running and cursing.
"Are you on a 2G network? Why didn’t you tell me before he got crushed?"
Little Buding retorted.
"It’s not my fault. He doesn’t look like what the files said. I only found out because of my keen investigation skills, okay? Hold on tight and watch out, so the rocks don’t crush him."
Suddenly, the person in his hand became quite valuable. Jiang Lai silently pulled him closer, and when a rock nearly hit him, Jiang Lai even used his shoulder to shield him.
"Why do I feel like the rocks always have it out for him alone?"
There were quite a few of them. Accurately positioned, they kept dropping right on his head. If she wasn’t there protecting him, this savior probably wouldn’t have been able to take a single step.
"That’s just how it is designed. He’s fragile, a bit careless and he’s done for."
"What kind of shitty design is that?"
"That’s why he needs someone to save him."
"Shouldn’t this sort of thing be done by the heroine? Why is it my business, just a side character?"
"Seems like this person is a bit twisted and not on the same side as the heroine."
Jiang Lai frowned, but managed to drag the person out, pulling and dragging. Most people got out, and upon closer look, it seemed that apart from this white coat she was holding, none of the other white coats made it out.
Strange.
"Jiang Lai, be careful. This white coat with glasses beside you isn’t an ordinary person. He’s the savior but was quite evil early on, the ultimate big boss."
"Isn’t it bad for you to make me save this bad guy?"
"Anyway, you’re just a side character. What’s the harm? Besides, isn’t everyone relying on you to reform this big villain and turn him to good?"
Jiang Lai felt it was utter nonsense.
If villains could be reformed, wouldn’t everyone put down their weapons and become monks?
So she didn’t have high hopes for herself, nor for the antagonist, just hoping he would follow the plot, complete the serum research, and then save humanity.
"I remember from the original plot, didn’t Little Eight have a serum?"
"Her serum can only slow down the mutation of the bitten but can’t change the final mutation outcome. But the savior is different. He’s researching a serum that can completely eliminate mutant cells. Once developed, humanity will be saved, and the remaining zombies will be dealt with eventually."
Jiang Lai nodded, looking at this white coat and feeling he’s becoming more of a central figure.
However, the issue now is how to handle him.
After all, everyone was captured by him, and now Jiang Lai found it rather awkward with the current situation.
"You..."
"I was forced."
The man in the white coat spoke up proactively, ignoring Jiang Lai and looking directly at Jiang Chao, who had the most authority, explaining.
"I am Doctor D’s student. The Doctor forced me to capture Superpower Users for his research, so I’m not your enemy."
Jiang Chao scrutinized him.
"Where’s the evidence? How do you prove you’re not with them?"
"I’m also a Superpower User. Initially, Doctor D’s research subject was me."
The man rolled up his sleeve to reveal an arm covered in needle marks, speaking with a steady, unhurried tone.
"I saw you on the surveillance, damaging the laboratory’s power system. I provided cover, allowing you to escape smoothly."
Jiang Lai felt something was off, but she nodded nonetheless.
"So it was you. No wonder the alarm rang for so long without anyone coming over."
Jiang Chao still harbored some suspicion and apprehension.
"Thanks, if that’s the case. Let’s go."
The other Superpower Users had already left quickly; this wasn’t a safe place. Reinforcements could arrive at any moment.
The vehicles were detained in the underground parking of the base, and the whole base collapsed, burying the parking lot. It wasn’t possible to go down and drive, leaving everyone with the only option of walking away.
Jiang Lai glanced at the white coat, knowing full well she had to take him along. So she leaned over to Jiang Chao, whispering.
"This white coat is a doctor, and we need a doctor right now."
"He has too many suspicious points."
"Someone’s injured, and we don’t have anything worth his concern."
That’s indeed the case, just an unknown small team, while he was a doctor. In this post-apocalyptic world, doctors were the most valuable.
Jiang Chao agreed.
"I agree, but it’s useless; he might not want to go with us."
"Even if we have to bind him, we’ll take him along. Besides, he seems easy to talk to."
"Alright, give it a shot."
Jiang Lai intended to try first, resorting to force if necessary. Unexpectedly, the man nodded and agreed without hesitation as soon as she asked.
Much more straightforward than Jiang Lai imagined.
"Don’t worry, our team is really capable of keeping you safe."
"Yeah, I can see that."
The man pursed his lips and smiled, a smile that sent shivers down Jiang Lai’s spine; it was clearly the pinnacle of a fake smile.
Obviously, he must have ulterior motives.
But there’s no choice. Jiang Lai had to take him along and treat him more importantly than her own life.
"I know a place where there’s a car, which I hid in advance before."
The man led them to an abandoned power station behind the base. After unlocking the door with a key, there stood a military vehicle big enough to hold over a dozen people. The vehicle had sighting and firing ports, with combat points on the roof. Inside, it was equipped like a small armory.
Jiang Chao looked at him in disbelief.
"Did you prepare all these by yourself?"
"There were a few partners, but unfortunately, they didn’t make it."
Saying this, the man showed a slight hint of sadness and regret on his face. Jiang Chao hesitated a bit, then decided to secure the vehicle first before discussing anything further.
In terms of driving, only Yan Zhouxing and Jiang Chao knew how to drive this type of vehicle, but Yan Zhouxing was injured in the base, rendering his arm immobile, and Jiang Chao couldn’t operate the vehicle alone.
Amid this dilemma, Gu Han Yan silently got into the cockpit, skillfully activating all the buttons and controls, then nodded to Jiang Chao.
"I’ll drive, but I have one condition: let him sit next to me."
