CHAPTER 330: CHAPTER 167: KITCHEN RESENTMENT (PART 2)
"Ah! Thank you, young ladies! Are you still on duty so late at night?" Mrs. Gui asked with a polite laugh.
"Yes, we’ve been delivering items to the eldest Miss! You first, please!" Both of them replied and left together.
Mrs. Gui breathed a sigh of relief. Following the maid’s guidance, indeed, the scenes from her memory gradually revived. Mrs. Gui was elated, she finally found the right place!
"Sisters over there! Hurry up and cook a bowl of noodles for our Master, the Madam, and the Miss!" Mrs. Gui pushed the door open and saw two more servants, so she greeted them with a smile.
By now, the kitchen fire was already out, and those who should have gone home had done so, leaving only these two assigned to stay on duty to tidy up. Just as they were about to finish and go home, an unexpected guest popped in!
The two servants looked at each other, instantly feeling displeased. The one dressed in jujube red responded with a forced smile, "This mother looks quite unfamiliar to us, in which part of the mansion do you work?"
Mrs. Gui was frantic and hurried all the way, taking a tumble and fearing being scolded for taking too long, so she felt uncomfortable. Hearing these words, she also became displeased and retorted with a smile: "Sister looks smart and sharp, so why speak such muddled words? Could it be that you don’t know about the return of the Third Master and his wife? You find me unfamiliar, and you didn’t think of this?"
"Hehe! We are the dumb ones, how could we think of that! We can’t compare to your sharp wit!" The person replied with a tone neither sour nor cold and gestured with her mouth, "There’s still some charcoal fire in the stove, and you can find noodles, vegetables, ham, meat, and other things in the cupboard. Go on and cook it yourself!"
Mrs. Gui’s face changed color, "What do you mean by that?"
"Don’t be angry, sister!" The other woman, dressed in dark cyan, said cheerfully: "We’ve generously offered you the kitchen to use, and yet you’re still not satisfied! This place is an important part of the kitchen! If it were someone else, we wouldn’t even let them! Sister, if you need to use it, please hurry up. It’s freezing cold; you can’t expect us to stay here too long, can you? We’ve been tired all day!"
"Exactly!" The jujube red dressed one huffed and added, "Wasn’t someone already sent to deliver meals to the Third Master and his wife? Weren’t they to your taste, or what? And how come the food box and dishes weren’t returned to us? Now, look at this, the tableware hasn’t been returned, but you are back asking for more food!"
"We’re also very busy, not just serving a single household of masters!" The dark cyan dressed one added, "Every other courtyard sends their own servants to fetch meals; only your side has our people delivering them, and still, you’re not grateful!"
"That’s right! Look at you all high and mighty, just because you served the Third Master outside for a few years, so what’s all the fuss about!"
"Hmph! If it’s so great out there, why bother coming back at all!"
"Shut your mouths!" Mrs. Gui, fuming with rage, scoffed, "Is it the servant’s place to gossip about the master’s affairs? It seems to me you’ve had enough living!"
The two retorted unwillingly to Mrs. Gui, "Which ear of yours heard us talking about the master? You’re the one starting trouble and blaming us! Oh, we have already done what was required, what more do you want? You’re the one picking faults with us and you think you’re right! Even if we reported to the Lady, the reasoning would be the same!"
"Fine! Let’s go to the Lady right now! I want to hear what the Lady has to say!" Mrs. Gui said, dizzy with anger.
"You’re so out of touch!" The jujube red dressed one continued, "Do you think the Lady has nothing to do all day but revolves around you? And look at the time, yet you still want to trouble the Lady!"
"That’s right, sister, your temper is too big! Just for a few words, you want to snitch on us? We are not the maids who sweep and do the chores; the kitchen cannot do without us during the New Year!"
"Exactly, with the New Year almost here, I really don’t understand why some people are so quick to throw a fit, shouting and clamoring! Is it because you want to beat all the servants of the mansion and drive them out to satisfy you?"
"Hey, stop talking! What are we, huh, can we even compare with others? Be careful, if she complains, we will be the unlucky ones!"
Mrs. Gui’s body trembled, too angry to speak. After a while, she barely suppressed her anger and said, "I won’t bother with you about these nonsensical complaints, but hurry up and cook the noodles so I can take them back to the Master and his wife! The food you delivered got cold, and the Master and Madam haven’t eaten; they’re still waiting with empty stomachs, so you’d better be quick! Humph, if you won’t do it, that’s fine, but don’t blame me for going straight to the Lady! I refuse to believe that, if the Master wants to eat a bowl of noodles instead of a meal, they can’t even have that!"
The two servants exchanged glances, glared resentfully at Mrs. Gui, and reluctantly started to work in murmurs, one kindling the fire, the other scrubbing the pot.
"It has to be chicken noodle soup, and you’d better be quick! If the Third Master and his wife blame us, getting rid of two servants is probably not a big deal! Let alone the Lady who wouldn’t say a word!" Mrs. Gui, seeing them finally getting to work, felt secretly pleased. To assert her dominance, she intentionally made an unreasonable demand.
Indeed, the jujube red dressed servant slammed down the firewood in her hand, her face darkened as she said, "Where can I find chicken soup now? How can I make you chicken noodle soup at this hour!"
Mrs. Gui snorted, "That’s not my concern, it’s your responsibility!"
The jujube red dressed servant, mocking with irritation, said, "Well, that’s just great! In that case, sister, you just wait! We’ll start boiling water and slaughter a chicken to make soup right now!"
"You!" Mrs. Gui was left speechless with anger.
