CHAPTER 42: CHAPTER 21 DEMONSTRATION TEST_2
Sang Wan couldn’t help but smile. Compared to the second aunt, Gu Fangzi indeed had more guts to act, and this comment wasn’t unjust to her.
Soon, Gu Fangzi sent Yan Chunjia with the list of servant’s nicknames from Ningyuan.
"Miss has instructed me to help you, Madam. If there’s anything you don’t understand, just ask me," said Yan Chunjia with unwavering eyes as she spoke to Sang Wan, assuming the role of the spokesperson for Miss.
At her words, Xingzhi, Hong Ye, and the other maids of Ningyuan all held their breath and listened expressionlessly, waiting to see how Sang Wan would respond.
"There’s no rush for this, you can go back first, I’ll look over it slowly," Sang Wan said with a smile.
"Miss said that my task today is to stay and wait for Madam’s inquiries, so I’ll just wait by the side while you take your time," Yan Chunjia responded with a smile, her words flawless, yet her feet refused to move an inch, clearly showing no respect for Sang Wan.
In the outside world, Sang Wan could turn a blind eye, and it wouldn’t matter much, but inside Ningyuan, in front of all the maids who served her, if she allowed Yan Chunjia to act this way, Ningyuan would likely never be peaceful! It would be more aptly named a garden of trouble.
"I don’t need your service here; you may as well take a day off and go home. The affairs of Ningyuan will wait until Mrs. Li returns! There’s no need for Sister Yan’s trouble!" Sang Wan’s eyes became sharp as she stared at Yan Chunjia coldly.
Yan Chunjia hadn’t expected Sang Wan, who was always so gentle and soft-spoken and a new bride to boot, to be so dismissive of her, and her face reddened slightly in embarrassment.
Confident with Gu Fangzi’s backing and sure that Sang Wan wouldn’t dare to chastise her, Yan Chunjia still refused to leave, shamelessly trying to please with a smile, "Madam—"
"Xingzhi, Liu Ya! See Sister Yan out!" Sang Wan’s face darkened and her tone grew sharp when she saw that Yan Chunjia truly had no regard for her words.
Her clear order could not be ignored by Xingzhi, and Liu Ya was all too eager to comply. They both stepped forward, said "Sister Yan, please!" and without further ado, they pushed and shoved Yan Chunjia out the door.
The maids exchanged silent glances, recognizing that the new Madam’s kindness had its limits!
Unexpectedly, less than half an hour after Yan Chunjia left, Mrs. Li, who had gone home to recover, returned to Ningyuan, trembling as she was supported by a young maid.
Upon hearing the report from the maid, Sang Wan who was looking over the servants’ list in the house, was startled and quickly got up to personally welcome her.
Mrs. Li was Shi Fengju’s wet nurse and had a deep bond with him. Shi Fengju was very filial to her, so Sang Wan dared not neglect this Bodhisattva.
"Why have you come, Mrs. Li! You should be resting at home until you’re fully recovered," Sang Wan said with a smile as she went up to assist her.
Mrs. Li hurriedly dodged, allowing only Xingzhi to give her a hand and said, "Oh Madam, please don’t do this. I’m not worthy of such treatment from you, Madam!"
"You are the young master’s wet nurse, so you are an elder to Miss Wan; of course, you are worthy!" Sang Wan smiled and didn’t press forward to assist her. After watching her sit down, Sang Wan personally took the cup of tea from the maids and offered it to her.
Mrs. Li quickly leaned forward to take the cup, exclaiming, "Madam, this is too much courtesy. You’re making me feel quite uneasy!" She then sighed with regret, "What a shame that this old woman is of no use anymore and missed the young master’s and your great wedding day! Oh, what a pity!"
Having missed Shi Fengju’s wedding and not being able to witness him welcome his bride into the home was a true regret for Mrs. Li.
"With you keeping us in your heart, the young master and Miss Wan are infinitely grateful! If you take good care of yourself, the young master will be happy!" Sang Wan assured with another smile.
Mrs. Li couldn’t help but laugh heartily, "Madam has such a way with words! It’s so comforting to listen to!"
"Miss Wan is simply speaking the truth! This is just how things are!"
Mrs. Li smiled and said, "I heard that Madam is in charge of Ningyuan now? There must be many matters to sort out swiftly? That is certainly appropriate! From now on, the young master will rely entirely on you, Madam!"
Her expression dimmed, and a hint of desolation crossed her eyes as she spoke with a sense old-world weariness.
Sang Wan took a mental jolt in alarm! Before she became part of the family, Ningyuan had been practically managed by Mrs. Li!
No wonder Mrs. Li came over in such a hurry, disregarding her illness! Needless to say, it must have been Yan Chunjia, or even Gu Fangzi, who said something to Mrs. Li.
Sang Wan felt a tremor of anger, Gu Fangzi was relentless, not even giving her a moment to catch her breath.
"Mrs. Li is joking! Miss Wan is new here and doesn’t even recognize all the faces yet; how could she manage anything significant? It’s merely about getting to know the faces in this courtyard. The garden seems well-ordered as it is, and I see nothing that needs cleaning up. Perhaps you could teach me, Mrs. Li?" Sang Wan responded with a laugh, quickly adding, "But this isn’t something urgent! Once you’ve recovered and come back, it wouldn’t be too late to discuss it! I’m young and inexperienced, so I will surely bother you for advice in the future! I hope you won’t find Miss Wan’s slowness troublesome!"
Mrs. Li’s eyes flickered with surprise, "Is that so? Madam means to allow this old woman to come back in the future?"
"Of course!" Sang Wan exclaimed. "You are the young master’s wet nurse; as long as you wish, you are naturally welcome back!" Sang Wan said with an embarrassed smile, "Miss Wan is thick-skinned and would like to learn more from you! Since you’ve looked after him since he was young, no one knows the young master’s moods, temperament, and preferences better than you!"
