Rebirth: The Comeback of the Girl
Chapter 387 - 386: Saving a Life
CHAPTER 387: CHAPTER 386: SAVING A LIFE
On Zhen Yan’s birthday, in order to transfer the ownership of the new shop, Zhen Yu had "opened a passbook" as an excuse to "borrow" the household registration book from her mother! Of course, she did actually open a Postal Savings passbook...
Better not to mention the past!
After getting the household registration book, Zhen Yan headed straight for the Household Registration Division at the police station! Not only did he separate his own registration from the family’s, but he also followed his sister’s orders and processed his ID card.
In the evening after school that day, Zhen Yan made a special trip to the Affiliated School! It was just to solemnly hand over the household registration book to his sister for safekeeping.
After covering all the loopholes, Zhen Yu sat waiting for Mr. Zhen to come and cause a fuss, planning to counter whatever move he made.
But as she and her brother waited and waited, two weeks passed and there was not a peep from Mr. Zhen!
On the other hand, although Mrs. Zhen was confined to bed for pregnancy care, she still had Gu’s father relay several messages from the internet café.
The messages carried no other meaning, just to urge the siblings to return the household registration book to her as soon as possible!
Zhen Yu treated her mother’s words like wind past her ears. There was no way she would return it! If she wanted it, she could go to the Household Registration Division and have a new one issued!
But judging by how much Mrs. Zhen and Gu’s father treasured this pregnancy, it seemed unlikely that the household registration book would be reissued before Mrs. Zhen gave birth.
---
April 20th, Grain Rain.
As soon as I got up in the morning, there was continuous light rain outside.
Morning jogging seemed to be out of the question, but Zhen Yu still got up after washing up and went downstairs, planning to make some breakfast for herself.
"Good morning, Zhang San."
Zhang San had been on the night shift and was currently leaning against the bar, drinking strong tea, waiting for Li Si’er to take over,
"Good morning, Xiao Yu. It’s been raining all night long; looks like it won’t stop all day today."
"Rained all night, huh... Those who stayed overnight are in trouble."
"Exactly! Almost everyone who came last night didn’t bring an umbrella."
Zhen Yu couldn’t manage so many people, so she turned to say, "I’m going to cook some porridge and boil a few eggs. Have breakfast with me, Zhang San."
"Sure, I won’t be shy!" After spending a lot of time together, Zhang San, Li Si, and the Zhen Family had become quite comfortable with each other.
Breakfast was served quickly, and since Zhen Yu got up early with nothing urgent to do, she chatted with Zhang San while they ate.
"Zhang San, is the renovation almost finished?"
"Um! If it wasn’t for the delayed days because of installing chandeliers and ceiling fans, it would have been done by now!"
"Then hurry up and order the computer desks and chairs! This time don’t get the simple ones like here; get slightly better ones!"
"What do you mean by better?" Zhang San asked, not quite understanding.
"The smaller the floor area, the better, of course, but the chairs should be comfortable to sit on! The monitors will be much larger; the desk area must be sufficient!"
"How much larger will the monitors be?"
"19 inches!"
Zhen Yu had reconsidered it recently and finally thought it was better to go for the best right away! 17-inch screens would eventually have to be replaced with 19-inch ones anyway, and by spending an extra 200 yuan for the 19-inch now, the next time she replaced the monitors, she could go straight for LCDs.
Li Si’er choked on the porridge, "Cough cough! 19 inches?! That’s almost the size of a 21-inch color TV!"
"Yes! Exactly 19 inches! Just buy the computer desk based on the size of a ’color TV’!"
Zhang San couldn’t tell if it was just him or not, but he always felt there was something strange in Zhen Yu’s tone when mentioning the word "color TV"...
He suppressed the odd feeling in his heart and nodded, "Got it, I’ll swing by the furniture mall this afternoon!"
Zhen Yu then asked about the hiring, "We’ve got five people now, right?"
"Yep! Li Si’er and I each recruited one more!"
Zhen Yu made sure, "Hurry up with the recruitment! I’m planning to open the new store on Children’s Day, have you and Brother Si thought about who’s going to go over?"
"Hehe! You’ve probably guessed!" Zhang San’er laughed when Zhen Yu asked, "With Brother Si’s old-fashioned and conservative ways, it’s definitely going to be me going over!"
Zhen Yu nodded, "Yeah, looks like my intuition is pretty accurate!"
After finishing the last sip of porridge, Zhang San’er put down his bowl and chopsticks, "I’m full! Is there anything else you need me to do?"
"Nothing much else, just find some time to tell Old Wang, after Children’s Day, we’ll be refurbishing the store, and we’ll still need him!"
Zhang San’er stood up with a laugh, "Ha! That’s great news! I’ve got to get him to pass me a cigarette! ... I’ll go take a stroll, you take your time eating!"
---
Since Zhen Yu had breakfast at home, she left for school later than usual this morning.
The road was no longer as empty as before, now every so often she would encounter a pedestrian or a student.
Zhen Yu strictly followed the traffic rules, walking slowly on the pedestrian path above the curb with her umbrella raised.
"Ah!!"
"Be careful!"
As she shouted, Zhen Yu immediately sprang diagonally forward! She swiftly reached out her left hand and grabbed the back of the boy’s shirt!
But the boy’s forward momentum was so great that once Zhen Yu grasped him, she almost got pulled down too! Without hesitation, she let go of her umbrella and grabbed with her right hand as well, and with her tugging backward, the boy finally stabilized his posture and avoided the misfortune of plunging headfirst into the puddle from his bicycle.
Once the boy was standing securely in the puddle, Zhen Yu let out a sigh of relief and released her hand. As she turned to pick up her umbrella, a still shaken voice came from behind, "Thank, thank you! If it wasn’t for you, ah..."
Zhen Yu picked up her completely soaked umbrella, held it above her head, and turned to look at the boy, expressionless, "No need to be polite."
After saying that, she was ready to leave, when the boy immediately shouted, "Hey! You’re taking this road too, you must be a student at the Affiliated School, right? What’s your name?!"
Zhen Yu had no intention of seeking credit for her actions, and she had something very, very urgent to handle!
So, she didn’t answer the question, and just walked away quickly. She started to run, holding her umbrella shut.
Anyway, she was already wet, running faster would mean more time to confront the ’system’ once she got to school!
---
Ten minutes later.
Zhen Yu, locked in a stall of the women’s bathroom, stared at the door and called out in her mind, "Was that you who just spoke?! Finally, you’ve stopped playing mute with me?"
The system didn’t respond.
"It was just a stumble! Why did you command me to [save a life]? Could someone drown in such a shallow puddle?"
"Talk! You’ve already exposed yourself, why can’t you say a few more words? At least explain to me, what exactly is going on today?!"
...
Five minutes later, an unanswered Zhen Yu ran out of patience, and got angry!
"Not talking, huh?! Next time something like this happens, don’t expect me to step in!!"
Originally, Zhen Yu hadn’t even sensed that there was going to be an incident!
If the system hadn’t ’startled’ her, she wouldn’t have had enough reaction time to reach out and pull someone to safety!
The system instantly flashed a message, [He could have choked to death!]
"Damn! That kid is so unlucky! ... I need to wash my hands right away! I really hope I haven’t been infected by him!"
