Rebirth: The Courtyard Bride Is Cool and Radiant
Chapter 25 How could they possibly retreat unscathed
CHAPTER 25: CHAPTER 25 HOW COULD THEY POSSIBLY RETREAT UNSCATHED
The front gate hadn’t been securely closed and was just wide enough for her to slip through. Seeing this, Yunyi abandoned the idea of scaling the courtyard wall and moving across the rooftops.
She deftly entered the yard and headed straight for the illuminated room. Inside, she heard someone saying, "If they’re eating meat, we brothers should at least get to sip some soup. It’s getting late. Let’s take the things and head back early. Everyone needs to stay alert these next few days."
Hearing that the people inside were about to leave, Yunyi instantly flashed into her space.
Once it was quiet outside, Yunyi emerged again, only to hear someone inside ask, "Have the guys who went out to handle things for Brother Du returned yet?"
"Not yet. But it’s just dealing with a snot-nosed brat; what’s there for the boss to worry about?"
"Do you even know who that snot-nosed brat is?"
"She’s the granddaughter of that old Chu—the one who, unafraid of death, pushed Gu Peiyan aside when Du Sanhe had us intercept the Gu Family."
"It’s her. Is Brother Du intending to eliminate the threat completely?"
"He’s just following orders."
"Boss, over the years, we’ve done plenty of dirty work for the Shen Family. Who knows when we might face retaliation."
The room fell silent for a while. Finally, someone said, "That’s why I was so generous with the goods for the brothers today. It’s to show their years with us haven’t been in vain."
"Boss, what do you mean by that?"
Sun Lao Liu pulled out a cigarette case and took one out. "The Shen Family has been getting crazier and more unscrupulous lately," he said. "I don’t think we can stay involved with them any longer. We have to do this secretly."
"I’ll follow your lead, Big Brother."
"Tomorrow, find some time to inventory everything we put in the cellar tonight. In a few days, find an excuse to give everyone some time off.
"Use that opportunity to move everything out of the cellar. With that stuff, we two brothers can live comfortably for the rest of our lives.
"Besides, things have felt off lately; I have a bad feeling something’s about to happen. It’s better for us to pull out now, before disaster strikes unexpectedly."
"Alright, I’ll arrange it in the next few days."
Sun Lao Liu felt he had covered everything necessary. Since he still had to meet his mistress, he didn’t want to stay any longer. "Alright, I’m off then," he said. "You should lock up and get some rest too."
Though these men weren’t good people, Yunyi, eavesdropping outside, couldn’t help but admire this one’s shrewdness.
Yunyi flashed into her space once again.
She heard someone open the door and leave, followed by the sound of the main gate being locked. "hacker, where did that stupid dog run off to this time?"
Then, she heard the sound of a room door closing.
When Yunyi emerged from her space again, the lights in that room were off.
She carefully made her way to the backyard. After a long search, she located the cellar they had mentioned, its entrance hidden in a storeroom.
She moved the millstone resting on top of it into her space before lifting the wooden planks covering the cellar entrance.
Indeed, without her space, moving the millstone pressing down on the cellar entrance would have been incredibly difficult. No wonder those men were so confident.
Taking out the flashlight she had stored in her space before leaving home, she descended into the cellar.
Once she saw the contents of the cellar, she mentally added another mark against the Shen Family. If these men could amass so much, how much more did the Shen Family possess?
This wasn’t just a cellar; it was clearly an underground chamber, crammed full. No wonder they said it was enough for them to live comfortably for a lifetime—it was probably even more than that!
Since she was here, she couldn’t possibly return empty-handed. She took half of the boxes directly into her space, then retraced her steps and restored everything to its original state.
She was one to hold grudges. Since these men were the Shen Family’s lackeys, how could she let them get away scot-free?
After exiting, she scaled the backyard wall and left the compound.
