CHAPTER 30: CHAPTER 30 WHAT HAPPENED?

She walked up behind the group of aunties crowding around the corner of the wall. "What happened?"

An auntie enthusiastically said, "The Wei Family’s eldest has found a partner, and they’re getting married next month. The cannery can’t assign housing right now. So, the Wei Family is thinking of dividing the room where the brothers live. They plan to let the eldest son and his wife live in the inner room, and the youngest son in the outer room. But the bride’s family doesn’t agree and is making a fuss about it."

Someone interjected with ill intent, "Ah, the Cheng Family isn’t wrong. If it really happens that way, the young couple might be too scared to even be affectionate after marriage, since the underage younger brother-in-law would be living in the outer room."

Yunyi had heard Wei Hongyan mention her older brother’s significant other before. She also had some understanding of the Cheng Family; they weren’t the type to be unreasonably harsh.

Just then, Mother Cheng said, "We definitely won’t be able to get a house from the cannery anytime soon. This isn’t a matter that can just be smoothed over. I think it would be better to rent a separate house for them to use as their wedding home."

As soon as these words were spoken, the room instantly fell silent.

After a long pause, Father Wei finally spoke, "In-laws, it’s not that we haven’t thought of renting. But who in this area isn’t already living in a full house? Even if there’s an occasional empty room in a courtyard, people are reluctant to let outsiders move in, aren’t they?"

This was indeed the plain truth.

At this moment, Yunyi had an idea.

She hadn’t initially planned to rent out the Chu Family’s courtyard. After all, she intended to return in a couple of years and worried that tenants might not take care of the place and could damage it. However, if it were the Wei Family and the Cheng Family, she could consider it. At least she wouldn’t have to worry about them refusing to move out later. In that case, she also wouldn’t need to trouble Auntie Wei to go and check on the house for her; a house left uninhabited for too long could easily fall into disrepair. Still, she decided not to voice this idea immediately. Many people had their eyes on the Chu Family’s property, so it was better to discuss it privately.

After the Cheng Family left, the crowd that had gathered to watch the commotion also dispersed.

Auntie Wei saw the Cheng Family out. Turning around, she noticed Yunyi standing in the courtyard and suddenly remembered the important task for the afternoon. "Yunyi, when did you arrive? Have you been waiting long?"

She felt genuinely embarrassed for almost forgetting her appointment with Yunyi because of her eldest son’s affairs.

Yunyi smiled faintly at her. "Auntie Wei, I just got here. I haven’t been waiting long."

Auntie Wei glanced around the courtyard and pulled Yunyi into the house.

They had just stepped inside when Wei Hongyan, panting heavily, jogged into the room. "Mom, I heard Sister Lanlan’s family came over?"

Auntie Wei knew what her daughter was worried about. "Alright, you’re a grown girl now. Can’t you be a bit more composed?"

Only then did Wei Hongyan notice Yunyi standing in the room. She murmured, somewhat embarrassed, "I was just worried, that’s all."

Her mother had sent her to her aunt’s house to borrow money. Upon reaching the alley entrance, she heard that the Cheng Family had come regarding the wedding house, which naturally made her very anxious. After all, buying a job for herself would cost a hefty sum, and the timing was particularly bad, with her older brother about to get married. She was truly conflicted. She dreaded being sent to the countryside if she didn’t secure a job, but she feared even more that her situation would ruin her brother’s marriage to Sister Lanlan.

Auntie Wei saw her husband, Wei Qiguang, enter the room. "Qiguang, Yunyi is here."

Wei Qiguang nodded at Yunyi. "Yunyi, I heard about the job situation from your aunt. Are you sure you don’t want to reconsider? After all, once you give up this job slot, it might be very difficult to return to the city."

Yunyi waved her hand dismissively. "There’s no need, Uncle Wei. We can go and complete the procedures directly in a bit. I’m heading to the countryside tomorrow."
