Lady Zhou shouted and screamed, saying there was murder, and then started spewing insults. Old Master Lian’s face was ashen, and he decisively put on his shoes and slipped out with his hands behind his back and head down. Lian Lanlan glanced at Lian Manman, quickly composed herself, and stepped forward to placate Lady Zhou.
"Mom, mom..." Lian Lanlan went up and covered Lady Zhou’s mouth, stopping her from hurling insults while winking at her to calm down in front of everyone.
"Manman, you see, when your grandma curses, she’s just confused; she’s actually cursing me, not about you guys. Let her rest a bit, after some rest, she’ll probably be fine soon," Lian Lanlan turned her head to Lian Manman with a flattering smile.
Even though she was being held by her own daughter, Lady Zhou still struggled mightily, unwilling to keep her mouth shut. However, even while swinging her arms, she didn’t aim at Lian Lanlan’s body or face.
Lian Lanlan was sweating profusely from the effort, and finally Lady Zhou quieted down. Only then did Lian Lanlan release her hold on Lady Zhou’s mouth, laying her flat on the kang.
Lian Manman silently clicked her tongue, thinking how ruthless Lian Lanlan was. Judging by Lady Zhou’s state, she must have passed out from being suffocated of oxygen by Lian Lanlan. Lian Manman understood what Lian Lanlan was thinking; she was afraid Lady Zhou would offend her, thus not being able to save her husband and son.
Lian Lanlan was actually quite like Lady Zhou; they were both self-centered and knew very well whom to keep close and whom to distance.
With Lady Zhou now quiet, Lian Lanlan wanted to chat with Lian Manman.
Lian Manman ignored Lian Lanlan and instead sat next to Lady Da Zhou, and started talking with Lady Da Zhou and Er Ya.
"Big Aunt, in this hot weather, how come you came by yourself? If you wanted to see my grandma, just let us know, we would have come to get you," Lian Manman said with a smile to Lady Da Zhou.
"It’s just a short distance, a few steps and I’m here. Er Ya helped me come," Lady Da Zhou smiled at Lian Manman. With such a short distance, there was no need for pick-up or transport, but Lian Manman’s polite words were pleasant to hear for anyone.
Seeing Lian Manman talking to Lady Da Zhou, Lian Lanlan also came over, calling Lady Da Zhou ’big aunt’ and joined the conversation.
"Big girl, did you come today?" Lady Da Zhou asked Lian Lanlan.
"I arrived just before noon," Lian Lanlan replied, and then started crying again, telling how Jin Suo and his sons got involved in a lawsuit and she had come to her maternal home for help.
"I’ve been sitting here for a while, and I’ve almost understood the situation," Lady Da Zhou said earnestly to Lian Lanlan, "You’re in trouble, coming home for help is right. But you also have to consider the elders."
"Big aunt?" Lian Lanlan looked at Lady Da Zhou in surprise.
"You call me big aunt. Seeing your mother like this, there are things I have to tell you. Big girl, you only come back a few times a year, and both your father and your mother are getting on in age. Their health isn’t what it used to be; they can’t handle too much anymore!"
Lady Da Zhou sighed as she said this.
"Know what should be said and what shouldn’t; even if you have to say something, understand how to say it. You’re not young anymore; do you still need others to remind you of these things? Since childhood, your mother has loved you the most. You shouldn’t disappoint your mother."
"You know your mother’s temper as well as anyone. She’s quick-tempered; who could withstand someone fanning the flames?" Lady Da Zhou looked meaningfully at Lian Lanlan.
Lian Lanlan was a bit uneasy at this moment, her eyes shrinking slightly.
"I also heard from the villagers, those words aren’t pleasant to hear. But for your own good, I still have to tell you. For the past half year, each time you return and leave, your mother starts picking on your brother, and it’s not just once or twice now. This time was even worse; the old couple even started fighting. Seeing your mother like this now, can you really be at ease?"
"Big Aunt," Lian Lanlan wanted to claim she’s been wronged. Everyone knew Lady Zhou’s temper. Even if she didn’t come, didn’t instigate, would Lady Zhou stop picking on her sons and daughters-in-law, would she and Old Master Lian live in harmony? And about today’s matter, wasn’t it all because Lady Zhang refused to come to the old house to obey Lady Zhou?
Yet, none of these words could be said by Lian Lanlan. If she said them, it would be criticizing Lady Zhou, going against her. At this moment, she didn’t dare to say anything bad about Lady Zhang.
