Chapter 1416: Chapter 1416: Being Informed, Calculating
Ning Zijun, standing behind the tree, widened his eyes in shock, followed by a surge of anger.
He thought to himself, “This woman is truly venomous. She deceived my brother from the very beginning. How hateful.”
So he stayed behind the tree, unwilling to step forward.
Wei Liling exhaled deeply, “Hai Lan, I know what happened back then hurt you, but it’s too late to say anything now. All I can do is offer financial compensation.”
Wang Hailan’s headache grew worse, “If you can’t give me what I want, then don’t come bothering me anymore—unless your goal is to drive me to my death. And don’t bring up our past anymore.
You’re married now, and I’ve also remarried. Talking about those things won’t benefit anyone. You’ve already ruined my life, so don’t make it impossible for me to go on.
As for the child, don’t mention it again either, because shortly after you left, the child was miscarried.”
Wei Liling’s eyes showed signs of anger, “Why?”
Wang Hailan let out a bitter laugh, “You have the audacity to ask why? You really don’t know why? You walked away like it didn’t matter. Now you ask me why? Don’t you think you’re incredibly selfish?
I waited for you for so long without receiving any word. I could only find a way out for myself, hurriedly marrying someone else. But if that child were born and suspicions arose, how would I go on living?”
Wei Liling, furious, shouted, “So you just abandoned him? You’re truly heartless.”
“Who are you to criticize me? Are you any better than me? Didn’t you also get married? Did you expect me to wait for you forever? You’re nothing but scum.”
Wei Liling looked at the woman standing before him, the one he had once loved. He had always believed that Wang Hailan loved him too and would find a way to protect the child in her womb. But he hadn’t expected her to miscarriage the child just to secure peace for her future.
He closed his eyes briefly and, after a long pause, said, “Fine, let’s pretend I didn’t say anything. Let’s just live our separate lives.”
Wang Hailan sneered, “What? Now that you know your flesh and blood wasn’t preserved, you think you don’t owe me anything anymore? Wei Liling, you’re a complete bastard.”
After saying that, she turned and left. Perhaps because of her anger, she hadn’t noticed Ning Zijun standing behind the tree.
This was a matter so serious that Ning Zijun wouldn’t keep it a secret for Wang Hailan.
Wang Hailan could never have guessed that Wei Liling’s reappearance would bring about another disaster for her.
Now, she didn’t want to go home, nor did she want to visit her parents. She wanted to find someone to talk to, only to realize she hadn’t made any truly close friends she could confide in.
Alone, she walked into a small restaurant, ordered two dishes, a bottle of beer, and started drinking.
Meanwhile, at the Ning Family home, Ning Zijun walked in and saw his mother, “Mom, is Ziping home?”
“Big Brother is here. Ziping won’t be home for a while. Do you need something from him?”
“Mom, I encountered something important today involving Ziping. It’s a big deal, so I came over to talk to him about it.”
“What’s the matter?”
“Mom, I’ll tell you and Ziping together when he gets back.”
Just as he finished speaking, Ning Ziping walked through the door pushing his bicycle, “Big Brother, you’re here too.”
Ning Zijun looked at his younger brother, unsure where to start. He feared his brother wouldn’t be able to handle it.
Old Lady Ning set aside the work in her hands, “Big Brother, Ziping is back now. What’s the matter? Stop being so mysterious.”
Ning Ziping washed his face, hung up his towel, and said, “Big Brother, what’s going on?”
Ning Zijun glanced at the doorway, “Mom, Ziping, let’s talk inside.”
He then closed the door but didn’t latch it, just in case someone entered, serving as a warning.
Ning Ziping chuckled, “Big Brother, you’re being too cautious. What’s the matter?”
Ning Zijun didn’t respond and walked straight into his mom’s room.
The room’s window faced the entrance, so they’d notice if anyone came by.
Old Lady Ning picked up her needlework again, “Big Brother, go ahead. What happened?”
Ning Zijun looked at his brother, “Ziping, I saw your wife earlier, over on Wutong Street.”
Old Lady Ning frowned, “She dares? Not heading home after work and going there instead—what’s she up to?”
Ning Zijun hesitated for a long while before finally speaking, “I overheard something. You both need to prepare yourselves mentally.”
Ning Ziping grew anxious, “Big Brother, stop stalling. Just tell me what happened.”
Ning Zijun recounted everything he’d heard. Old Lady Ning immediately flew into a rage, and Ning Ziping didn’t fare much better.
As pieces of the past flashed through Ning Ziping’s mind, his expression grew distraught.
He kept repeating the same words in his head, “So that’s how it is, so that’s how it is.”
Old Lady Ning finished venting her anger and turned to Ning Ziping, noticing his repetitive muttering. She was worried he might not be able to take the blow.
“Ziping, don’t scare your mom like that. This marriage must end. The Wang Family has gone too far.”
Ning Ziping snapped out of it when his mom shook him, “Mom, don’t worry. I’m fine. I just figured a few things out.”
Ning Zijun then spoke up, “Mom, Ziping, I think we shouldn’t make a fuss about this for now. The best course is to obtain evidence first. The Wang Family has treated Ziping like a pawn; we can’t let them off so easily.”
Old Lady Ning agreed with her eldest son’s suggestion, “Yes, your Big Brother is right. For now, act as if you don’t know anything. Don’t let Wang Hailan suspect anything. We must demand an explanation from the Wang Family, but only after we secure evidence.”
