"Go home for now. Unless it’s urgent, stay inside," Yaeger said firmly, gripping the [Holy Spirit Shard] in her hand.
"Alright," Angelica replied without hesitation. She didn’t understand what was happening, but she trusted Yaeger completely and quietly left.
"It’s near. The other Holy Spirit Shard is very close," Yaeger murmured, narrowing her eyes.
She looked ahead, her expression growing more serious. After all, the shard in her hand had come from the Eleventh Apostle. Which could only mean that the second shard nearby belonged to another Apostle.
"I can’t let them get any closer," she said under her breath. With resolve tightening in her chest, she bit her lip and prepared to move.
In a flash, she took off and vanished into the distance. She melded into the shadows and disappeared without leaving a trace.
Less than a kilometer from Aoma Village, a thin man rose lazily from the ground, brushing dust from his clothes. His face, covered in black Star Spots, was bathed in sunlight.
"You couldn’t even make it to the docks. Pathetic," he muttered, glancing down. He kicked the black horse lying still at his feet. The animal had long since stopped breathing.
He turned his gaze to his right hand. A shard sat in his palm, pulsing with black mist. "Heh, just my luck. I stumbled right into what I was looking for. He’s nearby," the man said, grinning.
Staring at the crescent-shaped shard, his smile widened with satisfaction. "So close… and getting closer. This is perfect." As the shard’s aura intensified, the feeling in his gut grew stronger too.
He could feel it. Destiny was about to unfold.
"Come on, little lamb. Let me, the Tenth Apostle, give you a warm welcome," he said, arms wide in mock affection. He stood over two meters tall, thin and stiff like a stalk of black bamboo.
The Tenth Apostle’s smile vanished as his eyes narrowed with sudden focus. His gaze locked ahead—where moments ago there had been nothing, a figure now stood cloaked in black, face hidden behind a white mask.
"You are…" He stopped mid-sentence as the shard in his hand began to tremble violently, threatening to rip itself free from his grip. "Heh, so it's you!" He clutched the shard tightly in one hand and pointed with the other. "You're that foolish mortal who killed the Twelfth Apostle!"
"So you are the source of the plague. How inconvenient." Yaeger stepped forward in her black robes, her masked voice steady and cold.
"You know I’m the one delivering the gospel, and you still walk toward me?" the Tenth Apostle said with a mocking smile.
"I can't kill you from a distance," Yaeger replied, her tone flat beneath the mask. She could feel it clearly, this Tenth Apostle was far stronger than the Twelfth.
With a Holy Spirit Shard in his possession, his power was amplified even further. Without Lili at her side, Yaeger felt uncertain whether she could win this fight. After all, it was Lili who landed the final blow on the Twelfth Apostle. Yaeger had only beaten him before his transformation.
‘No. I’m stronger than before. I can definitely hold my ground.’ With that thought, Yaeger reassessed her strength and made up her mind. What had felt like a fifty-fifty chance now seemed more like eight to two in her favor.
"Heh, then by all means, come closer." The Tenth Apostle smirked and moved forward as well. The distance between them vanished in seconds.
Yaeger struck first, unleashing a translucent fist formed from raw aura.
"Too slow, far too slow! A fly could dodge that!" the Tenth Apostle taunted. The Tenth Apostle answered with his own attack, summoning a shadowy fist of black aura and striking forward.
Their attacks collided with explosive force. A thunderous shockwave rang out. Yaeger staggered half a step from the blow. The Tenth Apostle stood firm, unmoved.
"Pathetic! You're nothing compared to me!" he mocked, flicking his greasy hair with contempt.
"Externalized aura manipulation. Same combat style as mine," Yaeger observed, steadying her stance.
Just as she spoke, cracks spread across her mask. In seconds, it shattered entirely, revealing her radiant face beneath.
"You're beautiful. A shame you'll be dead soon." The Apostle blinked once, recovering from his brief daze. A fanatic’s willpower was not so easily shaken.
"Is that all? Your strength is unimpressive." Yaeger pulled back her hood, voice calm and firm. He was weaker than she had anticipated.
He scowled, fury flashing in his eyes as he locked onto her. "Why are mortals always this insufferably stupid?" He shook his head with a sigh. "No matter. If you won't value life, I’ll show you what despair really means."
"Enough talk. Do something," Yaeger replied coldly. She sounded utterly indifferent, as if he didn’t even matter. And in truth, she wasn’t paying him any attention.
‘Something’s off with that horse. I can feel something dangerous inside it.' Her eyes had been fixed on the corpse of the black horse. Her eyes narrowed before glowing with a sharp green light.
‘So that’s your little gift,’ she thought, now fully aware of what lay inside the horse’s body. A faint smirk tugged at her lips. But her eyes stayed cold and serious.
With her enhanced sight, all she could see was a writhing mass of viral energy. That corpse was a walking plague bomb waiting to detonate. There was also a strange energy lingering inside the horse's body. It felt like the carcass could detonate at any moment.
If it did, the swarm of viruses sealed within would scatter in all directions without restraint.
"It’s better if you Apostles are wiped out," Yaeger muttered, conjuring a glowing green needle and firing it without hesitation.
The Tenth Apostle assumed she was targeting him. He immediately raised his guard, and his surrounding black aura hardened into a dense shield. But in an instant, the needle curved in midair and pierced the carcass of the black horse with precise speed.
The Tenth Apostle turned toward the horse just in time to see a brilliant green light burst forth. The horse’s body began to dissolve rapidly into a pool of thick red and black fluid, its form breaking down under the radiance.
He could clearly feel that the plague he had carefully embedded within was being completely cleansed.
"You… you can actually purify the plague virus?" he stammered, disbelief tightening his voice.
Before he could say another word, Yaeger rushed forward and unleashed a barrage of glowing fists straight toward him.
