CHAPTER 403: CHAPTER 404: TORTURE
"Rest assured, we will handle this fairly; please step outside for a moment."
The elders were ushered out by the police, and then an officer took out a recording pen and asked Shi Mei, "What’s your name?"
Shi Mei’s eyes lacked vitality, and anticipating their questions, she replied indifferently, "Shi Mei."
After a series of personal questions, the police moved on to the main issue, asking, "Regarding the body under Xiajiang Bridge, do you have anything you’d like to explain?"
Shi Mei’s gaze was dull as she said, "Indeed, I killed the person. They wanted to kill me, I didn’t want to die, so I had to deal with them all."
The two officers exchanged glances and then asked, "We found a dagger at the scene, what did you use it for?"
Shi Mei was very cooperative, confessing to everything without reservation.
The officers noted that Shi Mei’s account was very clear-cut, and every word she spoke was incredibly calm, so calm that it didn’t seem like she had accidentally killed two people but rather like she had casually killed two chickens.
"You saw him raise a gun to kill you, so you drove over him?" the officer asked.
Shi Mei replied quietly, "Yes."
The officer continued, "You didn’t have to kill him."
"I didn’t want to kill him," Shi Mei looked up, her dull eyes revealing no clear thoughts, "I just wanted to survive, I wanted to save my husband."
"But you did kill someone, not just one, but two."
"I know," Shi Mei stated calmly, not like a typical woman, "They wanted to rape me. If I hadn’t fought back, I would have been raped. Had I been raped, not only my husband would have died, but I would have too. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with my self-defense."
"But those were still two lives, did you think about that?"
Shi Mei suddenly laughed, her somber eyes seemingly spreading sarcasm, "My husband and I are also two lives, did you think about that?"
The questioning officer frowned.
A tough one.
However, admiration was visible in the other officer’s gaze, "Indeed, but the ones you killed were two foreigners."
"Are a foreigner’s life worth more than a compatriot’s?" Shi Mei scoffed, with evident disdain, "You grovel to the people from M Country like that, does the country know about it?"
"You little girl..."
"Officer Xiao Deng," the other officer stopped his partner and then continued speaking to Shi Mei, "We’re not groveling. We even want to commend you because these two were here illegally, their visas had long expired. But they were still foreigners, so tall and strong. How did you manage to kill two of them by yourself? There are gaps in your story. How could you, a woman who barely weighs over ninety pounds, fend off both of them?"
Another round of back-and-forth ensued.
After Shi Mei spoke the truth, they asked her again, "How did you know how to load the gun?"
Shi Mei answered with an icy look, "I learned from TV shows, and I played with toy guns as a child."
"Didn’t you feel scared after dealing with one person? Where did you get the strength and courage to deal with another?"
"What use is fear? Will being afraid prevent him from killing me or stop him from raping me?"
Officer Xiao Deng frowned, "But this is not logical."
Shi Mei was growing impatient, "If I had to conform to your logic, the body you’d be picking up off the roadside right now would be that of a woman who was raped and killed. And those two men, having committed murder, would be scot-free. You wouldn’t be able to catch them, much less trouble them because you’re too busy groveling to foreigners; there’s no way you would investigate their crimes!"
