CHAPTER 620: CHAPTER 489: A GOOD THING INTERRUPTED

Yan Jiu’s words struck a nerve in Lan Cai’er.

Even he knows?

"When you look at Dao Ge, anyone can tell. Little Lanlan, you actually like that kind of man?" Seeing Lan Cai’er’s pale expression, Yan Jiu did not feel the anticipated joy of verbal victory. Rather, there was a sour bitterness in the depths of his heart.

"Who said I like him!" Lan Cai’er shouted fiercely.

Before she could finish, Yan Jiu had already closed in on her.

"Little Lanlan, saying one thing while feeling another is not a good habit. I don’t like my woman thinking about other men."

The temperature inside the tent suddenly seemed to rise.

"Why have you stopped?"

Realizing that the person beneath him had stopped struggling, Yan Jiu halted his actions.

"If resistance is futile, why bother?"

Lan Cai’er gritted her teeth; what good would shouting do except to bring ridicule from others?

After all, when she agreed to share a tent with him, everyone looked down on her with disdain, including Dao Ge, who always thought of her as a cheap woman offering herself up, regardless of whether he recognized her or not.

At that moment, the tent’s curtain was suddenly flung open.

"Miss Lanlan, are you alright?"

Inside the tent, Yan Jiu and Lan Lan simultaneously paused.

Yan Jiu let go of Lan Lan.

Outside the tent, Song Jingyun’s face was flushed red, and Dao Ge stared grimly at Lan Cai’er.

Before Dao Ge could see clearly, Yan Jiu had picked up his clothes and wrapped Lan Cai’er up tightly.

He walked straight out of the tent, blocking the prying eyes of the two.

"Both of you, invading our tent in the middle of the night, doesn’t seem very appropriate," Yan Jiu said impatiently.

"I’m sorry, Captain Sha, I didn’t know that you and Miss Lanlan were— We just heard some noises and thought she might be in trouble," Song Jingyun quickly explained.

"There’s nothing that can happen to her while she’s with me. Since you’ve checked and there’s nothing wrong, you should both head back and mind your own business," Yan Jiu responded coolly.

Any interruption like this, at such a time, would not leave anyone in a good mood.

Song Jingyun, with flushed cheeks, pushed the dumfounded Dao Ge next to her. She had already said there was nothing to worry about, but Dao Ge insisted on checking.

Dao Ge didn’t leave immediately. He stood confronting Yan Jiu, feeling as though there was a fire burning within his chest, scorching his heart as if tearing a hole through it.

"Brother Dao?" Song Jingyun queried.

Not until Yan Jiu ripped down the tent fabric did Dao Ge leave.

Outside the tent, the footsteps gradually faded away.

Huddled under the covers, Lan Cai’er kept her head down the whole time, burying it in the blankets.

"You want to suffocate yourself." Yan Jiu, slightly frustrated and upset, seeing Lan Cai’er’s ostrich-like behavior, pulled the blanket off in one swift motion.

What he saw was a face drenched in tears.

Yan Jiu had seen countless women cry before him, but it was Lan Cai’er’s tears that truly shook him.

"I hate you."

Lan Cai’er grabbed her clothes, intending to rush out.

But Yan Jiu was quicker; he blocked the entrance of the tent.

"Go back to sleep."

"Get out of the way!"

"I won’t touch you, go back to sleep."

Lan Cai’er hesitated, unsure how much of Yan Jiu’s words were true.

Yan Jiu said no more and simply sat at the entrance of the tent. Lan Cai’er waited a quarter of an hour before stomping her foot and crawling back under the covers.

In the first half of the night, Lan Cai’er slept restlessly, fearing that Yan Jiu might pounce on her again.

Nothing else happened that night.

In the second half of the night, Lan Cai’er finally fell into a deep sleep.

She slept until dawn.

When she heard a delightful chirping of birds outside the tent, Lan Cai’er woke up.

In the tent, Yan Jiu was nowhere to be seen.

Recalling what had happened made Lan Cai’er somewhat embarrassed; how was she to face Yan Jiu after this?

She stepped out of the tent, where the campfire had already been extinguished.

All was quiet around, everyone seemed still to be asleep.

Lan Cai’er left the campsite and walked to a nearby pond.

After washing her face in the water, Lan Cai’er stared at her reflection.

A face with a large birthmark - no matter how she looked at it, it was ugly.

That such a face could be ’consumed’ by someone like Yan Jiu made Lan Cai’er realize that, perhaps for a libertine like him, all women looked the same in the dark.

Hmph, this time, after completing the mission, she planned to quit "Emperor’s Slaughter."

Lan Cai’er thought resentfully, picking up a stone and throwing it into the pond.

The broken water surface suddenly reflected another face.

Lan Cai’er gasped in surprise, almost stumbling into the water.

"Let go!"

Lan Cai’er would rather fall into the water than be saved by the newcomer.

"Lan Cai’er, what is this supposed to mean?" Dao Ge faced her with a grim expression, his eyes harboring fine red streaks, like a cornered beast fixated on Lan Cai’er.

Upon hearing Dao Ge call out her name, Lan Cai’er was stunned for a moment, but soon returned to her cold demeanor.

"Can’t you understand human speech? I told you to let go," Lan Cai’er said, and then slapped Dao Ge.
