Reborn in the 80s: She Rewrites Life with Radiance
Chapter 146: Ingratiation
CHAPTER 146: CHAPTER 146: INGRATIATION
Gu Yi was ready to add fuel to the fire.
"Auntie, if you had a daughter-in-law like Yang Lin, not to mention the issue of Captain Chen’s position, she could treat you at home for any minor ailments, saving you from having to waste money at the clinic."
"Well, it just means our family isn’t that fortunate."
Chen Jun’s mother feigned regret, but she was already calculating in her mind.
Gu Yi thought of saying something to make the lie more believable.
"Yes, it’s a pity. Yang Lin had her father transfer her away; she must have been heartbroken."
Gu Yi said this with a face full of regret.
"It just means the kids weren’t meant to be."
They both stood quietly for a while.
"Auntie, I’ll head home now. Don’t think too much about it; Sister-in-law Li is also quite nice."
Gu Yi said, giving Chen Jun’s mother an awkward smile, then walked home.
Chen Jun’s mother watched Gu Yi’s back, standing there for a long time without moving.
Li Dongxiang, how can she compare to a leader’s daughter?
Chen Jun’s mother made a silent resolution at this moment.
Even if Yang Lin’s heart had changed, she would still help her son win her back.
Gu Yi muddied the waters and cheerfully went home.
After lunch and a nap, she headed to school.
And so, a calm week passed.
On the weekend she returned to the base, but Ye Hao and the others hadn’t returned yet.
However, the rumors had quieted down significantly.
Ye Honglian and the others heard Gu Yi was back, and arranged to come see her.
"Lately, life at Chen Jun’s house has been really turbulent."
As they chatted, Ye Honglian suddenly brought up Chen Jun’s family.
"What’s going on?"
Gu Yi knew it must have been because of what she said to Chen Jun’s mother, but she didn’t know exactly what Chen Jun had done.
"Chen Jun’s mother has been saying Li Dongxiang hits her. At first, Li Dongxiang said it was Chen Jun’s mother causing trouble, and no one knew who to believe. But once, Chen Jun’s mother showed her bruised arms, and everyone started taking her side."
Wu Chunmei briefly explained the situation to Gu Yi.
Gu Yi thought Chen Jun’s mother was indeed ruthless, willing to harm even herself to achieve her goals.
She knew that once people saw an old woman with so many bruises, they would naturally sympathize with the weaker party and turn against Li Dongxiang.
"So how is their family now?"
Gu Yi asked curiously.
"Chen Jun beat Li Dongxiang so badly over this that she couldn’t get out of bed for days. Chen Jun’s mother is pushing for a divorce, saying that if not, she’ll be tormented to death by Li Dongxiang. Chen Jun’s mother is quite a stirrer, constantly scolding at home. Li Dongxiang, no weakling herself, argues even while bedridden."
Ye Honglian shook her head as she spoke.
"This works out; Li Dongxiang doesn’t have time to spread rumors about Yiyi. We all guessed it was her last time, but who knew she’d sneak around and not show her face."
Wu Chunmei thought of Li Dongxiang’s usual behavior and felt little sympathy for her.
"Let’s not talk about her, let’s discuss something else. Didn’t they say the mission would take a month? Why aren’t they back yet?"
Ye Honglian brought it up again, worried.
"Exactly, my heart is in my throat until they return. I wake up startled at night. They’ve gone off on a mission, risking their lives each day over there."
Ye Honglian expressed this, and Wu Chunmei also voiced her concerns, always fidgety while their men were away.
"It’s okay, Ye Hao said it would be over a month when he left; they might be back in a few days. Besides, no news is good news!"
From the first day Ye Hao left on the mission, Gu Yi had been anxious.
But seeing everyone so worried, she hid her emotions and tried to console them.
"Sister-in-law Ye, Sister-in-law Wu, don’t worry too much. I heard from Jianjun that the situation is still okay. Sister-in-law Gu makes a good point, no news is indeed good news."
Li Jianjun would occasionally mutter to Fang Hong at home, only mentioning that things were okay; the rest was classified and he didn’t elaborate with Fang Hong.
"Yes, being a military wife is like this. Outsiders envy us, thinking the men get allowances and life is okay, but who knows our struggles? We’re always on edge. Let’s stop scaring ourselves; everything will be fine."
Ye Honglian sighed, comforting herself as well as others.
Although everyone tried to lighten the mood, by the end, they still weren’t really in the mood, so they all left.
The next day, Chen Jun’s house was lively again.
Yang Lin knew about the tension between Li Dongxiang and Chen Jun’s mother and wanted to take advantage of Chen Jun’s mother’s absence to encourage Li Dongxiang to spread the rumors more.
But just as they started talking, Chen Jun’s mother returned.
As soon as she entered, she saw a young girl, fair and clean.
Clearly a city girl.
She immediately smiled and said.
"This girl is really pretty. Here to see Dongxiang, huh? What’s your name?"
Yang Lin noticed Chen Jun’s mother didn’t seem as fierce as Li Dongxiang described.
Seeing her smiling so kindly, she also smiled at Chen Jun’s mother and replied.
"Hello, Auntie, my name is Yang Lin. I heard Sister-in-law Li isn’t well, so I came to check on her."
As soon as Yang Lin introduced herself, Chen Jun’s mother’s eyes lit up.
She smiled even more warmly.
"So, you’re the girl who was in this unit and got transferred, right?"
Chen Jun’s mother thought that if this girl didn’t have her father, she wouldn’t want Chen Jun with her, clearly one who doesn’t know how to work.
But her family is so well-off, they can just hire someone to do the work.
"Yes, indeed. I’ve always been quite close with Sister-in-law Li, so we keep in touch often."
Yang Lin thought it was just as well to clarify her relationship with Li Dongxiang, so she could come looking for her more easily in the future.
But Chen Jun’s mother took it a different way.
She’s unwilling to part with Chen Jun, so found an excuse?
"That’s great, come more often then."
"Yang Lin, didn’t you say you had something to do just now? You go ahead first, come back another time."
Lately, Li Dongxiang had been clashing with Chen Jun’s mother, and she couldn’t stand her fake manners.
So she hurried Yang Lin, urging her to leave.
Yang Lin hadn’t even finished her business, how could she just leave? She always brought things for Li Dongxiang.
Otherwise, not only would Li Dongxiang not cooperate, she’d also make snide remarks.
"It’s fine, I’m not in a rush. Now that Auntie’s back, we can chat. Right, Auntie?"
Yang Lin turned and beamed at Chen Jun’s mother.
"Yes, stay a while. I’ll cook now; our Junzi is coming back soon. We can have a meal together."
Chen Jun’s mother thought Yang Lin wanted to see Chen Jun, so she went along with it.
"Thank you, Auntie. I bought some fruits; please have them, they’re very sweet."
Yang Lin handed the fruits she brought to Chen Jun’s mother.
Chen Jun’s mother saw the fruits and hadn’t seen some of them before, let alone tasted them.
"You’re too polite, really. No need to bring anything when you come just for a visit. They must be expensive, right? Anyway, sit here; I’ll go cook."
Chen Jun’s mother happily took the fruits away.
