They believed this was the entirety of their purpose.

But in truth, aside from their leader Ajak, the rest of the Eternals were unaware of their true mission: to protect humanity and ensure its flourishing, so that the Celestial embryo slumbering deep within the Earth could be successfully born.

The Celestials possessed the divine power to create galaxies and life itself.

In the early process of shaping the cosmos and planets, they scattered seeds of their kind across the universe so that new Celestials could be gestated within worlds.

When a planet's intelligent life reached sufficient numbers, the Celestial seed would absorb enough energy from them to hatch.

As for the shell that breaks apart to release it—naturally, it was the planet that nurtured it.

The task of the ten Eternals on Earth was to ensure that the Celestial within the planet could be born smoothly.

Only, this particular group of ten Eternals were mostly unaware of their true mission.
