"I am not," Inez refused right away. Her hands were clenching herp as she tried to calm down the fear that started to surge within her. Thest thing she wanted was someone to recognize that she was a siren in this godawful prison.

"You are his daughter. Even when you look like your mother, there is still some semnce that you share with your father."

"You are mistaken." Inez firmly refused to admit that she was the daughter of a siren.

"There is no denying the truth, my dear. You look so much like him that anyone who has seen him once can see the resemnce between you and your father. Your eyes, especially; they have so much vulnerability at the same time," he rubbed his thumb and forefinger together with a pondering look on his face. "Just the right tinge of seduction. They are just like your father’s." He crawled over to where the two sisters were sitting and winked at them. "Don’t worry; I am not a tattletale. I am not going to say anything to the guards; that will be too easy for them, right?"

Inez pursed her lips, trying to ease her hammering heart behind her ribs. The dungeon was filled with all kinds of twisted criminals. Could she even trust this man? Especially when he was unhinged enough to massacre his entire pack? Though he had a valid reason for that, it was still terrifying. The man tilted his head to one side and mused, "What a surprise. Howe no one realised that you were a siren? Your blood sings too loud. Even now, I can feel it. Siren blood. His blood." He lifted his head and stared straight at her. "Your father’s."

Her pulse started hammering. "You knew him?"

"I watched him rot, slowly and painfully." The man’s voice cracked with bitterness. "The female alpha who imed him swore that she loved him. She wanted to chain the storm without realising what she was even trying to do. However, she soon realised that a creature of the sea could never be restrained. So she chained him, determined to break him, crumble him until he gave in to her. And for a time, she almost broke him."

Scarlet’s eyes went wide when she heard the words of the man. "Mom..."

The prisoner’s eyes flicked to Scarlet, and he hummed. "You must be her half-sister, right? I saw that woman fall right in front of my eyes. So I know that you two cannot be rted to the same father." Clicking his tongue, the man sighed. "What a poor thing. He was such a kind man, an odd one out of all. Sirens are usually more unrestrained and chaotic. I remember that he was brought to your mother as an offering for an alliance. He was supposed to stay just for a week and leave, but shifters’ greed doesn’t really know bounds, does it?"

And Inez felt her rage leaving the bounds as well. A strange emotion coursed through her veins, where she could feel the molten fury bubble. She had never thought that she was capable of murder, but at that moment, she did have the intent to harm someone. The anger within her skin threatened to consume her. The rage was so alien that Inez wanted to break open the bars of this cell and then throttle her mother to death. Her own mother and she would happily watch her die at that very moment.

Scarlet studied her with a frown.

She shook her head at Scarlet, letting her know that she was not going to lose her temper. That she was still in control. For now. Her shoulders were square, and her stance was like that of a snake that was inches away from poisoning someone to death.

"My mother is an omega," Inez told the man, wanting to know more of what happened between her mother and her father.

The man shook his head slowly. "Ah, she was never an omega. At least not by birth. After the praise and fame of your father and his ethereal beauty scattered all over thends, another one came. A witch, with eyes like those of winter and a heart full of desire and hunger. She wanted him, too, you see? Could not stand the fact that your mother imed him. So she cursed her. Stripped her of her strength. Made her an omega. Unfit to lead, unfit to fight. Humiliated her with the worst kind of humiliation, all because your mother touched your father in a way she shouldn’t have."

Inez’s throat tightened. "And my dad... what happened to him?"

The man’s face twisted with glee. "Him? Gone. He disappeared. Vanished into the darkness. Some say the witch took him. Some say he broke the chains that bound him and then fled to the sea. No one knows the answer to this question, as there had been chaos when it happened." His gaze lingered on Inez, hard and knowing. "But you know what, girl? The witch’s obsession, your mother’s ruin and his disappearance... it all began and ended with him. But with the song that runs in your veins... I am not sure anymore."

"Why are you telling us all of this?" Scarlet shot to her feet. Looking down at the man who was still sitting and smiling at them as if he had just ryed a rather funny story. "I don’t believe that you are just telling us this because you wanted to."

The man continued to grin like a fool, and Scarlet’s jaw tensed.

"You are right; I didn’t tell you this for no reason." He smiled, all his teeth in the shadows. "But because I believe secrets rot in silence. And because you are the ones who wanted to know. Anyway, I can only tell you one thing. Those who wanted him... will want you, itoo." /i

The light outside their prison cells sputtered before flickering and turning off on its own, throwing the dungeon into deeper darkness.

Inez’s heart started to pound even harder; the words etched themselves into her bones. She didn’t know if she believed him. But the echo in her blood sang that every bit of what the man said was true.
