CHAPTER 61: GET HANDS DIRTY

A week later,

Alisha’s injuries had already healed well enough for her to attend a party. A week had passed since Katherine’s scandal, and Alisha had been staying home, recuperating.

However, today, she was going to the De Rossi family mansion. Today was the couple’s 35th anniversary, and she and Dante were both attending.

Alisha smoothly applied makeup to her face, happy because this was her opportunity to sneak into Mr. De Rossi’s study and snoop around for any documents since the anniversary party was being held at his home.

Alisha stared at herself in the mirror. Her scars were still obvious but with the right amount of makeup, she could cover them. She’d already told Maxine to get her a scar removal cream.

As much as she liked seeing Katherine suffer, she was still annoyed that her face had to suffer the blow.

"Are you ready?" She heard Dante from the door. He always had a habit of sneaking up on her, and it seemed he wasn’t going to stop anytime soon.

"Give me a moment first," she said as she turned to look at him and her jaw dropped.

He was wearing a body-fitting suit that clung to his muscles, making him look bigger than usual. She stared at his hard chest, suddenly having the urge to place her hand there and feel how rock hard it was.

His hair was brushed backwards with a few locks dangling over his forehead.

He looked fresh, smelled fresh and her mouth watered.

She quickly looked away to face the mirror but it didn’t help since she could still see his reflection through the mirror.

"What? I know I look handsome but can’t you compliment your husband for once?" He asked, leaning against the door with a grin on his lips.

Alisha rolled her eyes backward. "I can’t risk lying on a beautiful night like this."

"Oh really now..."

He watched her as she stood up from her vanity table, heading towards her closet to pick a matching red purse.

"Let’s get going Dante," she said dismissively as she applied her perfume while Dante watched her, noticing every detail before she walked past him, her cologne filling his nostrils.

His grin spread wider as he followed right behind her.

Since the anniversary party was happening in the De Rossi main family mansion, the media reporters were not allowed near the premises. So only the security guards and guests, together with servants were given entry.

The media reporters were stopped by the gate, which was a long distance from the main mansion, so they couldn’t capture beautiful pictures of the guests.

Dante and Alisha walked in, and Alisha was impressed by the interior decoration that matched the theme. The mansion looked like nothing she’d seen a month ago. It naturally looked exquisite, but now, it looked unbelievable. It was wide, bright, almost like heaven.

And as predicted, mostly politicians were invited. Alisha didn’t spot familiar celebrities.

"Alisha, I’m glad to see you here today," Mr. De Rossi greeted, a smile on his lips as he stared at her. His wife was by his side, meek and quiet as always.

She didn’t get the chance to spend time with the elderly woman a month ago, and looking at things, Alisha didn’t want anything to do with her.

This was still acting at the end of the day.

"Father-in-law," Alisha said, her smile even wider and brighter, revealing her pearly white teeth. "I missed you," she said, kissing him on both cheeks as a form of greeting.

"We didn’t get the time to talk much. It’s a good thing Dante brought you along, hmm?" The older man stared at his son who was looking elsewhere as if he didn’t want to be a part of the fake and warm conversation.

Alisha only chuckled a little before she greeted her mother-in-law also and the woman simply smiled at her.

Just as expected. She wanted to ignore her, but Mr. De Rossi looked like someone who might know something.

Her husband was a politician, and a corrupt one at that—she must know something.

Mr. De Rossi was called over and he had to leave, while his wife followed right behind him.

"I’m going to make this as simple as possible," Dante suddenly said, gaining her attention. "Don’t talk to my father. He’s not the best type of person you would want sticking around with for a long time."

His words earned him a frown from Alisha.

If Dante was aware of the misdeeds his father had done, then why hasn’t he done anything about it yet?

She couldn’t ask this question, unless she was ready to be questioned by him.

Some guests came towards them and asked to speak to Dante in private, he was about to reject them but Alisha stepped in and forced him to go ahead.

She needed him off her back if he wanted to successfully sneak into his father’s study.

Once he was out of sight, she heaved a breath in relief and immediately headed for the study which was upstairs.

Thankfully, there were no single guest in sight so picking the door wouldn’t be difficult.

Alisha was prepared for this...she had hair clips in her hair. She carefully took out one and picked the locks.

After thirty seconds of trying to pick the locs, Alisha succeeded.

Since the study was made with transparent glass which makes it easy to see through, she didn’t have much time since someone could waltz in there and catch her.

Alisha stared at her files, her heart racing in her chest.

The election was in less than a month now, and if Mr. De Rossi was truly behind the illegal trading of drugs to the locals, she needed to find evidence against him.

After one full minute of quick paper flipping, she found it. Alisha didn’t waste any time and quickly took pictures of the context.

Indeed, Mr. De Rossi was in charge of the illegal drugs sold to the locals.

However, she found something more intriguing.

The documents contained a kidnapping that had occurred in several areas of Lexora, and Mr. De Rossi had signed the permit for the criminals to do so.

Alisha couldn’t believe her eyes. She wanted to dive more into it but there was something else that she needed to find. She also took pictures of the context.

From the conversation Dante had with Lucas Tedoro, Mr. De Rossi should know something about her father’s death, or Greg Santos at least.

She started rummaging again. Seconds turned to minutes, sweat started spreading on her forehead because she’d disappeared for too long, and Dante would start looking for her soon.

She couldn’t let him find her there, but if she wasn’t able to find anything about Mr. De Rossi or Greg Santos there, she didn’t know when next she would have this opportunity again.

All of a sudden, she heard faint footsteps.

The person seemed to be thirty feet away from the study and they also seemed to be heading towards there.

Quicker than flash, Alisha hid herself behind a shelf. Thankfully, they weren’t built on the wall. So she could easily hide behind one and watch the person walk in.

She recognized that face.

It was Mylo, Dante’s younger brother. The last time she’d seen him was when he was flirting with Jennifer at the Met Gala.

’What could he be doing here?’

Mylo didn’t seem to be confused as to why the door to his father’s study was already unlocked. He seemed to be more bothered about what he was searching for.

Alisha peeked at him through the spaces between the files.

He had an exasperated yet impatient look on his face as he tried to find something.

"Where is it?" He muttered, practically hissing under his breath at this point while Alisha’s eyebrows furrowed in confusion. Who would have thought the son would be stealing from the father?

Mylo opened the drawers, oblivious to the person behind the shelf, watching his every move.

He flipped open a document, and his eyes brightened immediately.

He closed the drawer and left the office like nothing had happened.

Alisha waited until she couldn’t hear his footsteps anymore before she came out of her hiding spot. She returned to finding the documents she wanted when she suddenly received a text from Dante, asking where she was.

She hissed under her breath, knowing she couldn’t continue her search.

With a dejected sigh, she walked out of the study, making sure to lock it as she’d seen it earlier.

She saw her father-in-law up ahead, walking towards her.

"Dante has been looking for you, and this is where you’ve been?" He asked, glancing between his study and her, a sweet smile on his lips.

"Downstairs was starting to get too loud so I decided to come here to free myself," she responded.

Mr. De Rossi’s smile only spread further on his wrinkled face.

"You’re my daughter-in-law, even though I don’t know how you managed to enter my son’s life," he said as he took one step closer to her. "But I would have to get my hands dirty before the elections begin, don’t you think, Alisha?"
