CHAPTER 101: DEATH SENTENCE 2 [CHRISTIAN POV]

As I waited for Liam to arrive, I sat beside Leslie on the bed, praying that she was okay. Her pulse and breathing were steady, giving me some comfort.

A few minutes later, Liam showed up, still dressed in his hospital coat. He was carrying a large bag filled with basic medical equipment.

"Where is she?" he asked as soon as he stepped into my office.

"Right here," I led him to the hidden pocket door and into my bedroom.

Liam glanced at me, shaking his head slightly as he looked at the bed. His expression told me that he knew what went on in this room from time to time.

He wasted no time and quickly began to check her pulse and other vitals.

"She’s just exhausted. She should wake up soon. When she does, make sure she drinks a lot of water."

I nodded, taking note of his words. Relief washed over me that she was okay and that it wasn’t anything serious.

When we stepped back into my office to let her rest, Liam looked at me.

"So what happened? Why are you here so early in the morning?"

I plopped down onto the couch, rubbing the bridge of my nose with my fingers. Just thinking about the situation made my blood boil.

"She was forced to get engaged. It’s that disgusting pig that Zach’s been following," I replied in a low voice.

Liam looked slightly surprised. He observed me for a moment before speaking.

"So what are you going to do about it? You clearly have feelings for her. You’re not going to let someone else marry her. Especially not that freak, right?"

I slammed my fist against the couch.

"Of course not. I’ve been thinking of ways to get rid of him ever since she told me," I replied with a hint of anger.

Liam nodded, "I know I asked this before, but why don’t you just marry her instead?"

I looked at Liam with a face full of desperation. I wanted to choose that option with every fiber of my being, but that wouldn’t be right to her.

"I don’t want to use her. I already don’t know how to feel about the entire situation. Us, her family, my mother’s murder...it’s all just so messed up."

Liam nodded, letting out a soft chuckle. "Yeah, falling in love with a Moresi certainly wasn’t part of the plan."

I tilted my head back, looking up at the ceiling, "It certainly wasn’t."

"Well, hey man. Best of luck to you. I need to head back to the hospital, I’ve got a surgery scheduled in an hour. Let me know if you need anything or if she doesn’t wake up in two hours." Liam nodded once more before leaving the office.

I continued to sit on the couch with my head tilted back for a while longer. My thoughts were only on how to get rid of Karl before Georgio does anything more infuriating to Leslie.

My mind was a mess. I thought of Liam’s words, considering the option of just doing as he suggested.

"Maybe I should just do as he said? Marry Leslie and give up on revenge..."

Just as the idea came to mind, I felt a sharp stabbing pain in my chest. The pain from losing my mother was still tormenting me, even now. Even more than simply getting revenge, I knew something more sinister was happening behind closed doors.

My heart and mind were leaning in different directions. I felt like I was getting torn apart, and wasn’t sure which direction to take.

No, there has to be a way I can achieve both. If I took the easy way out, the guilt would eat me alive...

I stood up and walked into the bedroom. Leslie was sleeping soundly, though her eyes were still red and puffy from crying.

I sat down beside her and placed my hand on her hand.

"Leslie. Everything will work out. Please be a little patient with me. As soon as this is over, I’ll take you away, anywhere you want to go. No one will ever hurt you again."

The words came straight from my heart. They were my promise to her.

After saying my piece, I walked back into my office, this time taking a seat in my office chair. I picked up my phone and dialed Zach’s number.

After a few rings, he finally picked up.

"Christian? What’s up? Why are you calling me so early?" Zach’s sleepy voice sounded from the phone. I forgot how early it was amidst the chaos.

"Sorry, I didn’t realize it was still early. Listen, I need to get rid of Karl."

A brief pause on the phone told me that Zach was taking a moment to process my words.

"What? Why? He’s been the best lead we’ve had since you started this plan!" he countered. "If we get rid of him now, who knows how far back this will set us back!"

I let out a deep sigh, "I know."

"Let’s just give it some time. A few more months and we’ll have the evidence we need! I’ve been to the port that he frequents, there’s definitely something wrong with what’s going on there!"

His argument was tempting. From his daily updates, I knew that we were getting close to catching them in the act. But on the other hand, I thought of Leslie. I didn’t trust that man to wait until the wedding before putting his hands on her-- especially after learning about his past.

"I can’t wait that long. There’s been an issue, and he needs to go," I said softly.

"Christian! Think about it! We’ve never been this close, think about the other people who could be in your mother’s situation!" Zach pleaded.

I felt myself beginning to waver. It came down to another choice, and my heart was torn in opposite directions.

After a long silence, I finally took a deep breath.

"Get rid of him. We’ll find evidence another way."

I could wait another few months if I had to, but Leslie couldn’t. If he managed to touch her while I was getting information out of him, I wouldn’t be able to forgive myself.

For her, I would find another way.
