CHAPTER 680: 【674】QUEEN OF THE APOCALYPSE 10 (2 MORE UPDATES)
"Just like that, their new team was formed. They were truly of Special Forces background, possessing exceptional abilities, and their rank advancements after the awakening of their superpowers were incomparable to us ordinary people. But out of kindness, she still told Baozi."
"Mental powers may be strong, but you should use them sparingly, because mental superpower users don’t usually live long. In the later stages, the backlash can be brutal—you understand?"
These pieces of knowledge had been shared with her by Liang Tian, so while others were still exploring, she had already learned about certain disadvantages of superpowers, and the mental ones had the most obvious drawbacks.
It was clear that Baozi was unaware of the consequences, but he seemed to take it in stride.
"Thanks for the heads-up, sis. I’ll focus more on combat training moving forward, use my power as little as possible. But how did you come by this information?"
Zhu Li replied with a giggly expression, "How else would I know? Of course, I heard it from someone else!"
Although their team had grown stronger, with more and more people and monsters awakening, this highway was becoming increasingly difficult to navigate, especially near the city segments—it was nearly impossible to proceed, not just for vehicles, but also for people and zombies. It was like a surge of refugees.
Left with no choice, they could only opt to take national highways or side roads. But in a world without the internet, without electricity, this naturally meant no navigation; unfamiliar with the road conditions and often going astray, none of them would have thought that one day, a month after setting out, they would end up trapped in a small county town.
At first, they had dared to enter thinking this county was devoid of monsters, but soon after, they realized a terrible mistake—not only were there monsters, but there were many.
Because of these monsters, they were forced to separate.
In a panic, Baozi carried her running up the stairs because during a previous attempt at jumping down, she had broken her leg. She didn’t expect Baozi not only to not abandon her but also to carry her in his run, which touched her deeply.
But an unending stream of zombies was running toward them, and once they got to the rooftop, there would be no way back. Her water jets now had a certain attacking power, like high-pressure water guns, temporarily capable of repelling these zombies, but they could not kill them outright, unlike the Ice Element’s ice blades that could pass directly through their heads, causing instant death. The power of the water jets was much less.
They were eventually forced onto the rooftop, but the door there could hardly be held back by the frantic search for a stick.
At that moment, both their physical strengths were at their limits. Zhu Li assessed the surrounding buildings. Although none were as tall as the one they were on, the distance was within the length her vines could handle. Due to her slow rate of cultivation, the longest they could reach was twenty meters. She tried on the rooftop several times, selected one of the buildings, and wrapped her vines around one of the steel bars on its roof.
"Quick, Brother Baozi, slide down now. That door can’t hold much longer."
Baozi was still using his body to hold back the door. Hearing her, he was startled, then hurried over. Seeing the vine latched on, relief instantly spread across his face.
"Nice going, sister, you’ve got some skills, huh?"
"Bro, don’t joke around right now, my abilities are limited, you hurry over first, then I’ll follow."
Baozi hesitated for a moment, "Are you sure?"
"Of course I’m sure, hurry up, look at that door, it’s about to be knocked down by them, get over there quickly."
When it came to climbing, probably no one was more agile than soldiers. Given the time pressure, Baozi didn’t waste words and decisively grabbed the vines with his hands and feet, sliding down quickly. The branches on the vines created friction, and the slope wasn’t steep enough to lose control of one’s speed. In just three minutes, Baozi had safely reached the other side.
With a loud ’bang’, the door behind crashed down, and the horde of zombies immediately lunged towards her. Zhu Li’s face turned white, and despite her body being on the verge of collapse, she leapt down, forgetting she hadn’t mastered the ability to stretch and shrink at will. Although she had leaped down, the vines were still tightly clinging to the rebar on the opposite side, but due to inertia, her body smashed into the wall like a cannonball.
Her legs were broken; she couldn’t put any weight on them. In a critical moment, she turned her body, curled into a ball, and smashed into a ground floor glass window. From the rooftop, Baozi’s anxious calls could still be heard, while the zombies that had been at their previous location fell from the building like dominoes, crashing to the ground in a splatter of brains.
Zhu Li lay bloodied among the shattered glass cursing her lack of training. She seemed to see a tall, dark figure approaching her, then darkness enveloped her, and she knew no more.
Baozi saw where Zhu Li had fallen, to the fourth floor of the building. He wanted to get down to her but found the door to the rooftop locked. Frustrated, he began to smash things in a hurry. His spiritual power could control people and zombies, but it had no effect on these physical objects.
Meanwhile, Reyas, Gao Huajiang, and Zhou Kai Xuan were also in grave danger. The three of them were protecting Zhao Yun and two children, covered with numerous wounds, a testament to the difficulty of their battle. The child in Zhao Yun’s arms cried uncontrollably, whether from fright or something else, prompting Zhao Yun to constantly soothe her. Their noise trapped them in a supermarket surrounded by glass windows, which would spell certain death if breached by the zombies.
At that moment, everyone was filled with despair.
Unexpectedly, in the nick of time, Zhang Qinghai, Meng Zhonghua, and Rong Hua fought their way over. They not only dealt with the zombies outside but also rescued them.
Having narrowly escaped death, everyone got into their respective vehicles. Only when they counted the numbers did they realize Baozi and Zhu Li were missing.
Once the child entered the RV, the familiar scent and the safe environment calmed her, stopping her cries. A sweating Zhao Yun caught his breath while preparing her formula and apologized to everyone for the trouble, despite the other men trying to comfort her by dismissing her self-reproach.
"You don’t have to blame yourself. If we can’t protect women and children with all our abilities, then what good are they?" Reyas reassured her. "Just take care of the child in peace. Survival in the apocalypse is like this; it’s either you or me. We’re lucky to have survived this long after the freeze. So, don’t talk about guilt anymore. You’re doing great, and we all admire you."
Reyas truly lived up to being the captain. Despite the scars on his face making him look hideous, the sense of responsibility of a soldier made him stand tall and imposing in that moment.
