Skill Extraction: Exploring Dungeons
Chapter 46: Going Through the Maze
CHAPTER 46: CHAPTER 46: GOING THROUGH THE MAZE
The upright long spear slowly tilted.
As the entire spear fell, the spearhead pointed slightly to the left.
"Then let’s take the left path."
At this moment, there really was no better plan. Since the spear indicated a direction, just courageously charge forward.
Luckily, there were some safety measures in place.
"Yuyu, record the route."
"Alright, Master."
Upon entering such a maze, in desperate need of a map, Kane truly felt why Yuyu was so valuable.
Once again, the centaur girl and the dwarf positioned themselves at the front and back of the team, allowing the middle-range fighters to be fully protected.
Although Kane clearly didn’t need protection, he couldn’t refuse the goodwill of his teammates before his role changed.
A chilling wind blew down the path ahead, piercing and eerie.
The orange-yellow flames on the surrounding maze walls gradually turned into dark blue flames as Kane and his team proceeded.
Longbei walked at the forefront, sensing the changes around and sniffed the air.
"The smell of skeletons. It seems like the theme of this level is undead."
It was very common for skeletons to appear in dungeons, as many dungeons’ main monsters weren’t undead yet still had skeletons.
Skeletons, goblins, and slimes are known as the three major random monsters of dungeons, found in eighty percent of them.
Skeletons are the most prevalent because most dungeons’ native worlds consist of intelligent life-forms made of flesh and blood.
Yet, the undead are different: the dark blue flames, skeletons around the corners, the chilling wind, and the faint smell of decay.
It was undoubtedly undead.
Kane and his team moved forward and came across two more forked paths.
"Be careful."
The team instantly halted, each member on guard.
The warning came from Meizike, prompting everyone to look at him.
He pointed his finger at the ground in the middle of the crossroads ahead.
"Something’s off there."
Upon hearing this, Kane walked over.
Standing at the front of the group, he pinched a transparent block and increased its mass.
The dwarf just watched him as he lifted air towards the junction to throw.
Meizike stared hard at Kane’s hand, seeing the block emitting magic power.
"Kane, what are you up to? Warming up?"
Longbei couldn’t help but ask after watching Kane’s action.
Kreya approached and said, "Kane’s skills involve creating invisible constructs for attack or other uses."
"Oh, I see."
Having seen many explorer skills, Longbei wasn’t too surprised by Kane’s abilities.
As Kane threw the block, a mechanism in the middle of the intersection was triggered.
It was a trap, revealing a large pit at the junction.
Looking into the pit, it was filled with densely packed spikes; falling in would likely mean death.
The trap wasn’t the problem now, the question was which side to choose: left or right?
Glancing at his teammates, the other three shook their heads uniformly.
Kane held his head and sighed, "Let’s go left then."
Heading down the chosen path, after a few turns, they unsurprisingly hit a dead end.
Looking at the high wall in front, they sighed.
Longbei came over and said, "This is normal; in a maze, it’s impossible not to hit walls."
They retraced their steps and returned to the place with the trap.
Now it was the right side’s turn; off they went.
"Damn."
Just two paces in and another dead end.
They continued along the path back, returning to the first fork with three paths.
This time Kane tried consulting with teammates, but they insisted he choose.
"Let’s take the right side now; I think it might be the correct route."
An hour passed, and Kane and his team returned to the beginning.
He stood at the junction, gray and worn-looking, staring at the middle path.
"Maze, it’s like this."
Longbei again offered comfort with his experience.
"Let’s go."
With all wrong paths eliminated, the only one left must be the right one; how wonderful.
Just upon reaching the first corner, Kane spotted three skeleton soldiers; this time they’d huddled against the wall, waiting to ambush.
Kane halted, signaled the dwarf with three fingers, and gestured forward.
Longbei nodded and followed Kane for a stealth approach.
Turning abruptly with a thrust and a right slashing, they shattered the skeleton; Longbei followed with a swift kick.
This maze was filled with treachery, hiding monsters around corners and placing traps all over.
Pits, arrow slits from the sides; a regular team might have actually fallen into these traps.
"Monsters are only on the correct path," Kane noticed.
Upon hearing their captain’s words, Kreya and others pondered; it seemed true.
On the routes where Yuyu had a map, monsters appeared on the right path.
On map-less paths, Kane and his team toured every wrong route of the first fork without encountering a single monster, merely some traps.
But the moment they entered the right path, monsters appeared at the first corner.
It was unclear whether to call this dungeon treacherous or merciful.
Dodging several more traps, they arrived at another fork, with only two paths to choose from.
Fifty percent correct chance, "Kreya, it’s your turn this time."
With the captain’s words, Kreya could only brace herself and lead the team down the right path.
Then, winding around.
"We were just here, weren’t we?" Kane eyed a gap on the wall where he had previously marked.
"Huh? Were we?" Kreya’s eyes were full of confusion.
Yuyu projected the map into the air, showing indeed Kane and his team had gone in a circle.
"Haha, hehe," Kreya scratched her face slightly, blushing.
Meizike suddenly spoke up, "Why don’t we let Yuyu lead the way instead?"
Indeed, why not?
Kane picked up Yuyu and asked, "Can you identify the correct path?"
"I can’t, but Yuyu can scan the surrounding space to roughly calculate the right one."
"Why didn’t you mention this earlier?"
"Huh? This needs to be brought up on my own?"
"Next time, if you have a solution, make sure you mention it, okay?"
"Yes, Master, Yuyu has noted it down."
With a propeller on, Yuyu flew up and began scanning.
"Go this way."
Following Yuyu, at each junction, it scanned and then chose a path.
"The road ahead has flaws."
Meaning there was a trap, Meizike could only find traps on the ground, not on the walls.
Now Yuyu also had the ability to find traps.
It turned out Kane’s luck this period had all been consumed on discovering Yuyu, a comforting thought.
Though it was simply making an excuse for himself.
