Space Odyssey: Spectre
Chapter 127 - 127: Ouch
Accompanying the Dullahan Knight was a Coachman driving an old carriage made out of metal that was being dragged along by two clockwork biomechanical horses. Just like the Dullahan Knight the Coachman was also headless. Then there was one in a roman Chariot with two headless occupants and it was drawn by two of those horses as well.
"Wow, these are some pretty crazy designs." Charlie popped her head up for a moment and the Coachman aimed his bulky rifle in her direction and then fired as she ducked back down.
BANG!
There was an explosion of stone as part of the wall she was hiding behind broke apart. "Yeah, don''t get hit by the Coachman. My armor''s shields are down for the moment." Jace told them as he ducked behind the rock.
"What is our plan for dealing with them?" Ulin asked as she readied her shotgun making sure all of the shotgun rounds she could have in it were in it.
"Well," Jace thought for a moment before peaking out and firing a few rounds from his Spitfire at the Dullahan which was making its way around the side quicker since it was not dragging a carriage behind. Then he ducked behind the boulder again as the Coachman fired again. "If these things are anything like Metal Scarecrows then they will use clockwork components for their main functions. So it would be a good idea to get in close and jam those up before destroying whatever core they have."
"As much fun as that sounds, there is one problem with that plan." Charlie pointed out before peaking out and then immediately diving away from her position when another round from the Coachman destroyed the wall she was hiding behind, sending pieces of rock flying at the three of them. Then a moment later a metal spear embedded itself in the ground.
Jace raised an eyebrow before peaking around the corner to see the Chariot duo had a large bundle of spears at the ready. Then he ducked behind the boulder again as another shot rang out. "Yeah… I am working on that." These things were mechanical headless creatures with mobility to ride on horses.
Jace frowned as he realized something. "The horses are the weakness. They are too bulky to actually move around quickly. If we kill those clockwork horses we buy ourselves some time. It will also allow you two to get closer to the Chariot duo and the Dullahan Knight without issue."
"What about the one with the high powered rifle?" Ulin asked as she partially peaked around her boulder before ducking back when a bullet sped past her and hit the wall near where they entered from. There was now a welt on the wall which warped one of the panels.
Jace smirked under his helmet as he noticed something. "I have a use for him. So I will distract him. While you two go after the other ones. I suggest you work together to take them down one after another. Do not make things more difficult on yourself by trying to divide up the work."
He then dashed out from cover and began running to the left side of the room. Doing a dive roll after a few seconds as a bullet whistled past him and hit another wall panel. After completing the roll he spun and popped up firing his Spitfire at the Coachman. There were sparks as the bullets bounced off of its exterior armor. Just like the other three headless beings it had a fully metal exterior but it was decorated to look like a Coachman from Earth''s ancient Wild West lore.
His bullets did not have much effect on the Coachman but it did turn all of its attention to him and he directed his horses to move through the maze of walls and boulders towards Jace''s direction.
Jace dove behind a boulder as another bullet whistled past him and hit another wall. Warping another wall panel. He waited a moment as it moved farther to his direction before moving to another boulder. As he moved another bullet whistled past him.
While he hid behind another boulder he heard a ding as his heads up display showed him that his armor''s shields were powering back up after having enough time to cool down. He peaked around the side of the boulder and saw the Coachman had gotten closer while the Chariot duo and the Dullahan Knight were in the Coachman''s blindspot and focused on Ulin and Charlie. He dodged back behind the boulder as the Coachman shot again, blowing off a chunk of the boulder he was hiding behind. Immediately after the impact of the bullet he stepped out from behind the boulder and fired his Spitfire aiming at the Coachman''s clockwork horses.
He aimed specifically at the weaker organic components of the horses. The first one went down quickly before he had to duck back behind the boulder again. Another chunk of the boulder disappeared under the assault of the Coachman.
Afterwards he emerged from behind the boulder and fired at the not dead clockwork horse, killing it as he moved behind another boulder. The Coachman''s carriage was immobilized when its horses died. When he peeked out from behind the boulder he was not surprised to see the Coachman moving down off of his carriage.
Just like he thought, it was moving slowly and very mechanically. Jace glanced at the Coachman as it moved. Its mechanical parts were visible for a few moments as it moved. But he had to duck behind a boulder again as it raised its weapon and fired.
As he felt the impact vibrate through the boulder he ran out from behind his cover and dashed towards the Coachman. Jumping over stone walls as he moved. He raised his Spitfire and fired the rest of the bullets in his magazine. Aiming at a chink in the armor where he could see some gears moving.
Then he saw the Coachman aim its high powered rifle at him. Jace dove forward into a roll behind a stone wall as he heard the Coachman fire. But blinked in surprise when a chunk of the stone wall three feet to his left exploded. He raised his head above the wall and saw the Coachman was struggling to pull its arm all the way over. It was shuddering like it was trying but it was stuck on something.
Jace jumped over the stone wall he had taken cover behind and ran at the Coachman. Dropping his Spitfire and pulling out his knife as he moved. He was a few feet from the Coachman when there was a quiet pop and Jace could see a small metallic object fly out as its arm quickly began rotating. It spun towards him and Jace lowered his body and moved further to the left.
BANG!
He could see the explosive release as the bullet flew out of the barrel of the Coachman''s high powered rifle. The spinning bullet cut through the air. Then out of the corner of his eye he saw the bullet fly off as the Coachman had over adjusted and shot too far to Jace''s right.
Jace was in range before the high powered bullet even hit anything. He pushed the barrel of the Coachman''s rifle up and cut through it with his knife. As it fell apart the metal Coachman moved its hands to grab at Jace''s arms.
Jace flipped his knife in the air and then caught it with his other hand before slicing through the Coachman''s left shoulder as he moved past it. Then he spun around and cut through its right shoulder. Moving too fast for the Coachman to catch him.
As its arms began falling to the ground he swept the metal clockwork Coachman''s feet out from under him. Then since he had the moment he looked over to see Ulin and Charlie''s progress.
They were already fighting the Dullahan Knight in hand-to-hand combat. While the Chariot duo were throwing spears at them from their crashed chariot a distance away. Ulin had brought a plasma shortsword with her that she was using. While Charlie was using her arm energy shield while in her other hand was plasma handaxe she was using. It was a very medieval style battle.
Jace turned his attention back to the Coachman who was swaying back and forth on the ground trying to get up. He crouched down and started using his knife to open it up. It took a moment before he got the most heavily armored section removed.
It revealed a disturbing fact about these headless creatures. There were bundles of wires running into motors that all went to either a powersource which was very standard or it went to a cylinder of semi clear green liquid.
The semi clear green liquid had the wires going through it into the gray human brain that was inside. The wires were directly connected to the brain. On the bottom rim of the cylinder was a name and number.
He wiped one of his armored fingers against it as he read it aloud. "Emma Imalia, 13. Project Number - 020145." After he read the name the Coachman seemed to go still. It also made him realize he had spoken through his external communication channel. "Do you want to die and be realeased from your torture?" Jace asked.
The Coachman- Emma''s artificial body made a motion like it was trying to nod a nonexistent head. Jace nodded in response and after a moment he pulled a few wires and the illuminated cylinder lost light. Then a second later he watched as the brain fell apart.
